[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Install on Zotac Zbox CI327?

Hello there, (after a looong time not using Fedora, just back to it!) I've tried installing Fedora on a Zotac Zbox CI327 (Intel Celeron N3450 inside) but this happens to fail. I've tried F25 but it has not the right kernel to make it (I've read about 4.10 minimum), then tried F26-Alpha-1.7 Live and Rawhide-20170518 Live but none could reach the graphical login. They both boot, some steps take a lot of time and I end up in a state I don't understand but which is not friendly ;-). How to turn on networking from rescue boot

So... I did a "sudo dnf upgrade" and things seemed to do well. However, when I rebooted, it hangs on bootup with the statment "Holding until bootup processes complete" or something like that -- I'm doing this from memory. I tried with a couple of older kernels, but they also hung. I assume that this is some transient thing associated with the upgrade. Over the years, I've had glitches appear on an upgrade and disappear on the next upgrade. Accordingly, I'd like to boot into rescue mode and see if I can upgrade again. However, I've forgotten how to turn on wifi networking from rescue mode. Can anybody point me to a tutorial? Thanks, billo

suspends shutdowns system instead of suspending

Hi, A new bug has cropped up on my system Dell Precision 5510 running Fedora 25 Plasma Desktop. Anytime I suspend my device it shutdowns and obviously I lose all my unsaved work. I have tried all the kernel currently installed on my system 4.10.10-200.fc25.x86_64, 4.10.9, and 4.10.8. I have also tried downgrading systemd to systemd-231-10.fc25.x86_64. F26 update: gnome-terminal doesn't launch; locale issues

I just did an update from F25 to F26 via dnf. After it boots, I can no longer start gnome terminal (nothing shows). If I ssh into the machine and try it remotely, I see the following: $ gnome-terminal (process:3586): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached So it looks like there is a locale issue in my update. Does anyone know how to fix this?

how to correctly log without journald (and its blobs)?

In previous Fedora distros was (IMHO) right way to log only to syslog, without journald and its (for me) unwanted annoying binary logs, by using configuration as: *) Set systemd log target to syslog: systemd.log_target=syslog (syslog-or-kmsg) ---- on kernel cmdline systemd.default_standard_output=syslog --/ and LogTarget=syslog ---- in systemd.conf DefaultStandardOutput=syslog --/ *) configuring rsyslog to listen on /dev/log unix socket: $SystemLogSocketName /dev/log ------ in rsyslog.conf $ModLoad imuxsock ----/ $OmitLocalLogging off ---/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/syslog --/(legacy directives) $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/socket -/ $AddUnixListenSocket /run/systemd/journal/stdout / (not sure when all last three directives needed) *) prevent to run journald: systemctl mask systemd-journald.service (and maybe mask systemd-journal-flush.service) And it works fine. But in actual Fedora 24 in systemd man page values syslog-or-kmsg and syslog are missing in LogTarget option. As systemd/journald man pages say hardly anything about exact mean of appropriate configuration for this purpose, then please when someone more knowledgeable can advise: - where to direct the systemd output? Maybe to kmsg an then read it in rsyslog via imklog? (rsyslog should have also imkmsg module, but is not in rsyslog-8.12.0-3.fc24) - what about /run/log/journal/.../system.journal ? On my test F24 system it have open rsyslogd, abrt-dump-journal-oops and abrt-dump-journal-xorg (no need for these last two) processes. Uses it also something else? - what about /run/systemd/journal/{dev-log,socket,stdout} unix sockets? Should rsyslogd listen on them? - /dev/log seems be now symlink to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log socket (as defined by systemd-journald-dev-log.socket) Should it be left (because now something sends to /run/systemd/journal/dev-log), or can be /run/systemd/journal/dev-log removed? how to (re-?)construct grub menu?

Good afternoon, I found out the rather hard way what caused those boot failure problems that were the subject of a threat starting last month. After my weekly "dnf upgrade" last Thursday, I checked my root e-mail, and found the hard drive had 8 bad sectors, then 16 bad sectors. A smartctl short test showed several parameters "pre-fail", and the others "old-age". I obtained a new drive. My Cray Research friend gave me a USB stick with "Clonezilla-Live-Version" on it. That duplicated the old hard drive onto the new one, but apparently not 100%. After the old drive was removed and the new drive installed, I could not boot. The system was being put into a grub shell(?). (It displayed the "grub> " prompt.) After beating out heads against the wall (or the phone), my Cray research friend gave me another USB stick with "Boot-Repair-Disk" on it. That rebuilt a grub file, but not correctly. But at least I got a grub menu when booting, and I was able to edit the shell that the grub menu entry would run. I had to take the "efi" off the commands "linuxefi" and "initrdefi". That allows me to boot up Fedora. But the menu is missing an entry for windows, and I still have to edit that script every time. I want the grub menu to offer the three most recent patches of Fedora, the most recent Fedora rescue shell, and windows-7, in that order. (This is a dual-boot system.) And I want the shells launched by the menu entries to be correct. How do I get that accomplished - the correct Fedora-25 way? If it matters, the motherboard uses UEFI bios. Thank-you in advance. Running local SSH as background process - possible??

Ok guys, I know this isn't strictly "Fed" related, but the group might have suggestions. My use case, the process has a number of remote servers. I'd like to be able to run a bunch of commands on the remote servers as fast as posible. The initial thought was to loop through the different IPAddresses, and SSH into each server, to run the commands. However, this process was still "sequential" in that each SSH session needs to complete, prior to running the next server/ssh command. So, my question/need -- is to figure out how to run a ssh as a background on the local server. This approach would/should allow the process to quickly fire off commands to the remote ipaddresses/servers in a much faster/parallel manner. sortof: foreach iplist as ipaddress ssh user1@ipaddress command & (assuming that the '&' runs the local ssh in the background -- it doesn't!) Running "stuff" on the remote can occur in a "Screen" session, which would allow the ssh process to fire off the remote cmd, but it still doesn't run the local ssh as a "background" process.. Rick has mentioned/discussed the "Screen" function in past threads. Thoughts/comments....

autofs and ssh fail over ipsec tunnel

I use an ipsec tunnel to connect my LAN (192.168.2.h) in North Carolina to my son's LAN (192.168.1.h) in Maryland. We each have a primary machine that manages the ipsec tunnel and several secondary machines. Static routing tables direct traffic for the remote LAN to the local primary machine and thence through the tunnel. Cross-referenced DNS tables effectively join the two LANs as one. We expect all the usual network tools (autofs/nfs, ssh, rsync, etc.) to work thru the tunnel. Recently we've noticed that autofs/nfs and ssh don't work between a secondary machine and any remote machine. Autofs/nfs and ssh work perfectly between the primaries. Ping works perfectly between all machines, primary or secondary. For autofs the key subfunction seems to be rpcinfo. If I reboot my F24 system, openvpn server fails to properly start but a subsequent manual systemctl start openvpn@server does succeed. Why size of Firefox package is double in Fedora and CentOS?

Hello, in openSUSE, Debian and ubuntu, Firefox package has the size between 42-46MB, while in Fedora it is 89MB ! why? even official Mozilla builds of Firefox for Linux is 44-46MB.

Delta RPMs -

Is dnf no longer using delta rpms? I updated two computers this morning and it looks like both were 100% rpms ... Bug? Multiple password prompts for encrypted partitions

Hi all, I'm seeing a similar error to what is described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=470740 Essentially, I have to enter my password 3 times on boot before my encrypted partitions unlock and I can boot, using graphical entry. If I hit Esc and enter at the text console, it seems to work on the first attempt (most of the time). I have 3 encrypted partitions (/, /home, swap), but these don't seem to correspond to the number of times I have to enter. In other words, the behavior does not appear to be unlocking one partition at a time. After the first entry, it pauses a second, as if I've entered incorrectly (even though I haven't), and then the second entry errors out and resets the input field instantaneously, as if no attempt was made to unlock the drives. Then, the third entry works normally. This is a recent issue for me, as I've had the same setup working across several of the last few Fedora releases. I've only seen this issue after upgrading to F26, and even then, it only appeared after some update (not sure when). Does anybody have any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot this, or have any ideas why this is happening? Perhaps a more recent bug report which matches? Any help would be appreciated, as this is quite annoying.

f26 chroot PATH doesn't include /bin

I have an old CentOS5 that I chroot into. On my old f20 box, PATH included /bin, but now on f26 it does not. I don't understand how this could happen; I would think that PATH is set inside the chroot by the shell. How does PATH get set? File transfer for a GoPro Hero Session

People, I just bought this camera but on my F25 x86_64 XFCE workstation, plugging the camera into a USB port does not register a device - from Googling it appears that I might have to use gvfs to get a usable connection? F26+Plasma: windows go to background when resized!

When I resize a window by clicking in a corner, the windows goes in the background during dragging and remains there after dragging, this is very strange! This does not depend on the "windows behaviour" settings although I normally use "focus follow mouse" (I get the same behaviour with "click to get focus"). Frédéric

F26 not updating?

I have been trying to run sudo dnf update -y[1] for a few days now and it always seems to fail. I'm really not sure why this is happening as I have "never" had this problem before. Looking for some help w/ F26 + TLP + acpi-call kernel module

I have TLP installed to extend battery life. I have a Lenovo T440s and I have Fedora 26 installed. When I run TLP it recommends the installation of the acpi-call kernel. When I follow directions here[1] it "works" until the final step(s) of: dnf install akmod-tp_smapi akmod-acpi_call kernel-devel. At which point I get the errors: No package akmod-tp_smapi available. f26 logwatch users: audit report tons of messages?

Per [1], I was seeing tons of audit messages listed in logwatch reports. (My patch fixes that, btw.) My actual question is why I wasn't seeing those messages in my old (old) F20 logwatch reports, but did see: --------------------- Kernel Audit Begin ------------------------ **Unmatched Entries** enabled 0 flag 1 pid 0 rate_limit 0 backlog_limit 320 lost 0 backlog 0 backlog_wait_time 60000 instead. Is this your experience, that some upgrade started giving tons of audit messages? I think that previously, when logwatch looked at the logfiles, it was misconfigured to not use /var/log/audit/audit.log, but instead: LogFile = modsecurity2/modsec_audit.log and what I saw came from /var/log/messages (not sure why). Satellite upstream

Hi, I was just wondering. Are there any plans on having an upstream project for Redhat Satellite 6? Or even satellite 7? I mean, if you want to practice and test new features the only real option I've found that you have is putting together the components of 6 or running spacewalk. But that isn't what I'm looking for, I think. Any other related tips would of course be appreciated as well. -- Ds

Online Fedora documentation seems to be intentionally broken. The site has been redesigned and all links fail. Every link redirects to the site main page and the main page does not include any search function. Specifically, the RPM guide (a document which has been in "draft" status for a long time but is extremely useful nonetheless), is nowhere to be found. PSA: RTL8723BE users beware upgrading to kernel 4.12+

For anyone else with the misfortune to have a laptop with the RTL8723BE wifi chipset, be cautious about upgrading the kernel to 4.12 or later. It might still work if you use antenna 2, but I can't verify that. In my case with ant_sel=1, the wifi can't see anything with the 4.12 kernel or higher. I've filed https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1486463 if anyone else wants to follow it. There was a patch related to ant_sel not working that was applied to 4.13, but it was reverted due to a null pointer problem.

The question is what triggers making the symbolic links at boot time, is it /etc/mdadm.conf and do I simply rebuild it? and how can I change them from the hostname to be root, boot, and swap or change the mdadm command to look for the hostname entry? akmod timing problem or what?

dnf upgrade to F26

I tried to upgrade one of my systems to F26 according to the documentation at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DNF_system_upgrade I did the download and everything went fine. I then did sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot and here is where things went weird, there was no output at all on the monitor. The disk light was flashing, so something was going on, but nothing showed up on the monitor. After a while the disk light stopped flashing, and I assumed it was time to reboot. I rebooted, but nothing happened, the system did not boot. I tried several times with the same result. That was yesterday. Today I downloaded the F26 Workstation DVD, burned to a disk and placed it in the DVD drive of the what appeared to be a dead system. This time the system booted, but there was no F26 kernel, only F25 kernels. However, there are f26 packages installed. I was going to redo the download and upgrade, but when I run dnf I get this: [pgaltieri@caseyjones ~]$ dnf Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/dnf", line 57, in <module> from dnf.cli import main ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'dnf' Anyone know what I need to do to fix this system? There are 2 other systems I want to upgrade, but after this experience I'm hesitant to go ahead with the others. This system is my test system so there's nothing important on it. several issues with F25

Over the last week I have observed several problems with how F25 runs on my laptop. Issue 1: The system does not suspend on lid closed. I have an external monitor attached to it and I can continue working on the system despite the lid being closed. When I run gnome-tweak-tool and indicates the system should suspend on lid closed. I have attached the png image of the gnome-tweak-tool screen. Issue 2: Back in the F24 days and even prior to that I filed a bug (1389019) which states that when I boot my laptop on battery and login the power status applet is not displayed in the MATE top menu bar. It does show up when I plug the AC cord in. This problem has now gotten worse. The power applet is no longer displayed regardless of what I try. I have had to re-open this bug since it was without it ever being fixed. Issue 3: I run the MATE desktop and so I also run the mate-screensaver. This is configured to display pictures from my Pictures directory. Under the the "Power Management" screen it is configured to suspend on lid closed and to put the display to sleep after 5 minutes. After 5 minutes the display is not put to sleep, the pictures from the Pictures directory continue to be displayed. Issue 4: If I close the lid prior to the screen saver kicking in, wait a minute and then lift the lid my session resumes without being asked to enter a password. This to me is a serious security issue. I have installed updates as of 8/15/2017 None of these issues existed a couple of months ago, except for maybe the suspend issue. It has been a recurring problem getting the system to suspend on lid closed. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't and I've made no changes :-( Has anyone else seen these issues? As a side note why is there no equivalent to gnome-tweak-tool for the MATE desktop? What's up with firefox on f26?

A recent update asked to remove firefox (55.0.1-1.fc26), and when I followed with an install I ended with the old version 54.0-2.fc26 installed. Attempting to upgrade to the latest goes nowhere (see below). I found a redhat bugzilla regarding an unwise decision to force an unnecessary dependency https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1484345 mentioning there is a new package (firefox-55.0.2-3), but it is not showing up. Anyone knows what is going on with this? Firefox is the most 'net facing application here and I need to have the latest version installed. F26 guest in qemu/kvm and 4.12.8-300 kernel

Has anyone tried running a F26 guest in qemu/kvm with the latest 4.12.8-300 kernel? When it comes to GNOME I can only boot to multi-user mode, not graphical, by removing rhgb from the boot parameters. If I attempt to boot to graphical mode it hangs at "Started user manager for UID 42" with UID 42 belonging to gdm. If I boot to multi-user mode and then login and use "startx" I am presented with a black screen and maybe the "Activities" indicator in the upper left. When it comes to KDE, which is configured for sddm, it will boot to graphical mode if I remove "rhgb quiet" from the boot parameters. However, the screen cannot be resized and issuing a "xrandr --output Virtual-0 --auto" is not effective and may result an apparent hang or a display which goes wonky in that it seems it thinks it is resized....but it isn't and the mouse isn't where it thinks it is. When I boot into the install there is an error in the destination section. I looked at the debug info in the storage.log and there was an error about sdb1 did not exist. But... xorg-x11-drv-libinput touchpad middle-click?

With xorg-x11-drv-synaptics on F25, I used a 3-finger click on my touchpad to emulate a middle-click. This doesn't seem to work with xorg-x11-drv-libinput on F26. (I am using Plasma, so still on X.) Typing Emoji in F26?

With my packages and the situation with build time options I take the position of enable as much as possible since our users don't get to pick their compilation options. However tcp_wrappers is a legacy thing that no longer belongs in today's world. I have no objection to a flag day in F28 development and dropping the build option at some point, preferably before the thing that is no longer an alpha ;) ... ie way before beta. As for downstream ... well we're Fedora. If Red Hat want it still in RHEL8 that's up to them and they can maintain the downstream patches in their distro still.

DNF suggestion

Hi, Would it be possible to make [dnf update] output something immediately after being run? And what would be the right course of action to get this feature implemented? I know it's probably a miniscule thing, but it's one of those small details you notice when shifting over from an apt-based distro. When running [apt update] or [apt upgrade] it responds instantly. I usually run it like [sudo dnf update] and when you mistype your password it gives you a wait period, but so does [dnf update]. So in a brief moment you're left hanging not knowing whether the password was incorrect or if [dnf] is simply updating. I know changing [sudo] to not give a wait period would be a lesser crime to some, so therefore I'm wondering if we can change [dnf] instead. If I'm addressing the wrong list, please advise. Also I'm not very good at C languages so I can't just provide a patch unfortunately. -- Ds

problem starting X

I found many references to similar problems but none are suitable in my case. I know that I am using an old video card but it is understood to be supported. I think that the problem is in the way the server starts and may be easy to work around. Details below. The symptom is this: - I start the computer (cold start) Waking up from a hibernation does not have a problem - I am presented with a login screen, and use it - the screen freezes, no keyboard or mouse <<<<< the problem - I kill Xorg (ssh from another machine) <<<<< the current ugly fix - I am presented with a login screen, and use it - my session starts and all is well I investigated the matter and now think that I see a problem. F26: balsa users having trouble sending mail?

If you use balsa, in Fedora 26 you may have trouble sending mail (see Bug 1479177 - since upgrade balsa is no longer able to send emails[1]). balsa uses libesmtp to send the mail, but libesmtp was accidentally built without SSL support (fixed in my Bug 1483350 - libesmtp built w/o SSL support -- compat-openssl10 required[2]). balsa itself should also be built for compat-openssl10. In the past (e.g., F20 that I upgraded from) a mail server with a self-signed certificate was accepted, but is now rejected with a useless error message. I think that a self-signed cert is OK for submitting email as it is only used to keep the data (and your password) private (fixed in my Bug 1483649 - balsa no longer accepts mail server self-signed certificate[3]). When composing a message, the toolbar Queue button sends immediately instead of queuing (fixed in my Bug 1483354 - balsa message window Queue toolbar button sends immediately[4]). Usage of PageUp/Page Down Key in gnome-terminal

Hi guys, I'm running F26/x86_64 and having the following problem: In earlier Fedora Versions, I could use PageUP or PageDown key to scroll through the gnome-terminal output (or I could use the mouse wheel for doing the same). But in F26, nothings happens if I use these keys or the mouse wheel! Anybody knows whether this feature has been been abolished in F26? OS for Thinkpad T42??

Some years ago, I bought an IBM-refurbished Thinkpad T42, meaning to devote it to use with a Garmin UPS, under Linux of course. It turned out not to be suitable for that. I put it into the guest room, where it also got little or no use. Until last week, it still had Fedora 22. I've been trying for days to get F26, or 25, or even 24 onto it. It demanded an i386, 32-bit .iso; and I did finally manage, after a lot of grief, to get it to seem to finish an installation. Upon rebooting, it says only that it can't boot what it has! As a last resort, I've been looking for a Puppy Linux version. The download page offers versions for Ubuntu (which affects me like sand in the teeth), Slackware (which I've never even seen running), and M$. Oh, and also for the eeePC. For the t42 you need to tweak one kernel parameter. T42-CPU does not support pae-extension. Somewhere down the kernel-line they changed the default setting. From default to 'required', thus very old cpu's won't boot anymore, unless you drop this requirement. F26 OpenVpn at boot

I've just set up an openvpn connection on a Fedora 26 desktop. But I can't find/remember how to set it so that it's activated when the wired connection is activated and if openvpn fails the also the wired connection is taken down. In previous Fedora versions wasn't there a legacy network connection GUI that had this option? How is it done nowadays? /Mark

rpmbuild --rebuiild with config options

I'm trying to put together a minimal emacs rpm and I'm trying this, with the ensuing error: rpmbuild --rebuild emacs-25.2-3.fc25.src.rpm --without-all rpmbuild: --without-all: unknown option I untarred the emacs source code and ran ./configure --help and --without- all is an option. I tried a few other config options - rpmbuild doesn't seem to recognize any of them. In the past I used rpmbuild --rebuild system-config-network-*.src.rpm --with gui and it worked. What am I doing wrong now? Thanks!

Bluetooth Audio segfaults

Hi there, I reported a few weeks ago an issue I observed when trying to pair and use a bluetooth audio speaker to a Fedora26 system. The issue was reported at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1469961 However so far there had not been any reaction. The issue was observed from multiple users I know and had been reproduced with different audio speakers. So my assumption currently is that the bluetooth audio is completely broken under Fedora 26. Can anyone confirm this issue or at least confirm that it is working for him? As this is an issue that not allow to use existing hardware correctly, I would appreciate if anyone having ideas to possibly working arround the segfaults. tcp_wrappers deprecation

Hello Fedora devels and users, more than three years ago, the same topic started discussion if we want this package in Fedora or not and how [1]. The discussion resulted mostly in flames and in the removal of the dependency on tcp_wrappers from systemd. But it was quite agreed that it is considered as a security layer for some users, if they use it correctly, or something that is or should be replaced by firewalls. So can we discuss it now once more without the affiliation to systemd? The fact is that we still do not have any other replacement except firewalls. But do we need one? The complete removal of the package is probably not a wise step, even though we can not find tcp_wrappers in recent SuSE anymore [2]. It is still available in Arch [3] without other tools depending on it. To be fair, Debian [4] is still building tools (for example openssh) with a build-time support for it. My primary concern is OpenSSH, which upstream dropped support for tcp_wrappers three years ago (late 2014) [5] and since then we are maintaining one more downstream patch. But this effort should be coordinated among other components to simplify the transition for users who insist on using it (using tcpd). Removing the dependency will also allow us to trim the default install for few more Kb. If there will be no significant drawbacks, I will progress with filling a system wide change for Fedora 28 and I will pull the maintainers of other tolls using libwrap into the round and discussion. Fedora 26 server installation

I'm trying to kickstart a Fedora 26 server from a local repo. What is the magic sauce to force installation from local repo only? The PXE file points inst.stage2 to the local repo and sets inst.geoloc=0, yet after "Starting automated install", download of repodata/* files, there is no more access to the local repo. I'm logging https requests to servers like 67.219.144.68, proxy06.fedoraproject.org, vm3.fedora.ibiblio.org etc. instead.

firefox private browsing issue

I thought I should ask here before logging an issue with ff. I discovered that when I do banking in firefox [54.0 (64-bit) on f24], after I log out and open the login page again, I am not asked for the user/pwd but am allowed straight in. After I log out I also clear cache/cookies but I am still allowed in. If I log out a second time then it takes. This does not happen in a standard window. Has anyone noticed this? F25 -> F26 printer problems

hello, I use two printers, an HP4630 & Xerox 6655, both on networks. They have been in use with no issues from F24 upgraded to F25. Now with F25 upgraded to F26 there are some issues. The machine is Thinkpad x260, running with Gnome desktop (3.24.2-1). uname -a: Linux rwells-x260 4.11.11-300.fc26.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 17 16:32:11 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The HP 4630 has been set up using the HP Device Manager which recognizes it as expected. No problem printing a test page from within HPDM However within the "Printers" application available from Gnome "All Settings" the 4630 "Printer Details" shows the printer address as "localhost" (even though Cups shows the correct address) and any attempt to print from an application, e.g. LibreOffite Writer fails. The job is listed as "Stopped" and has to eventually be removed from the queue. A side note: XSane has no problem using the scanner component of the same device just as it did before the upgrades. The Xerox 6655 printer appears with the correct IP address in the "All Settings/Printers/Printer" dialog and any print job remains in the Job list as "Stopped" just as in the case of the HP4630. However in this case the job is sent to the printer. After it prints it must be manually removed from the job list. Anyone else seeing this? Is this some new feature I need to deal with, I believe there was a Firefox upgrade this morning when I did the usual dnf upgrade. Whatever it's a problem for doing a search with Google. why doesn't GRUB obey /etc/default/grub?

By now we've seen a few postings that you can't customise grub the way that it's meant to be done (by modifying /etc/default/grub) as the processes used by "dnf update ..." ignore it. Hi, How to configure Samba on Fedora25. Seems too complex. Anybody could indicate an easy tool to configure Samba on Fedora25. I have a Win7 32 bits as a virtual machine running on KVM. All is working fine, but I want to share files on Fedora25 with this machine(Win7_32). How? Need some help, please. Thanks.

I have lost the ability to resize windows with alt-middle click

Starting maybe a few days ago, holding Alt near the corner of a window and middle-clicking, which used to turn the cursor into a window-resizer, no longer does anything. I tried other variants (other buttons, the Super key) and none seem to do it. Any suggestions for how to get it back? This is F25 and I update regularly. Thanks, Matt

Please make DeltaRPM for all minor and revision versions of a Firefox release

Hello, size of Firefox package in Fedora/CentOS is double (89M) compared with another Linux distros, this is very huge, currently DeltaRPM for Firefox is available only from last update to current update! this means if the user don't/can't update the Firefox for only one time, he needs to download huge data, this costs bandwidth and traffic use for both the client and the repository provider this is an acute problem, because Firefox rapid release which Fedora only offers it, has very fast updates. I beg you provide DeltaRPM for all minor and revision versions of Firefox within one release, or provide Firefox ESR instead, I have currently Firefox 54.0-2 and there is a available update for 54.0.1-1, and if I want to keep the Firefox up-to-date I must download a very huge package (89M) just for a minor update! this is a disastrous situation!! I really can't continue to use Fedora if this problem don't solved.

Is there any possibility of copying code from mathematica to use with maxima, octave, gnuplot to create a truncated icosahedron? can't reclaim disk space on F26 install

I'm trying to install F26 on an i386 system with a single 119Gb SSD. It previously had F22 installed, with a straightforward partitioning scheme: sda1 ext4 500Mb /boot sda2 LVM encrypted, and containing /, swap, /home I booted off Fedora-Workstation-Live-i386-26-1.5.iso, and in the installer, I selected: Storage Configuration: automatic ticked: "I would like to make additional space available" ticked: "Encrypt my data" done I then chose an encryption password, then the "Reclaim disk space" dialogue appeared. I selected Delete all but the "Reclaim space" button remains greyed out The "reclaim disk space" screen shows: disk name filesystem reclaimable space action ----------------- ---- ---------- ----------------- ------ 119.2 GiB ATA ... sda (blank) 118.94 GiB total Delete ext4 sda1 ext4 187MiB of 500 MiB Delete fedora sda2 LVM not resizable Delete Free space 1.3 MiB Ay the bottom of the screen it has: LHS: 1 disk: 118.94 GiB reclaimable space RHS: Total selected space to reclaim: 3.24 GiB Installation requires a total of 5.59 GiB for system data Then there is Cancel button and an inactive (greyed out) "Reclaim space" button. Any ideas how to proceed from here? For this install I'm happy to for the current disk contents to be completely blown away and for Fedora to partition the whole disk as it sees fit. -- My get-up-and-go just got up and went.

Covert a Shockwave Flash File (.swf) to something useful

Ultimately, my goal is to post some SWF files to Youtube. An acquaintance created a series of screen-capture and audio-narration video tutorials that produced SWF files, and would now like to post them to YouTube, which doesn't appear to accept the SWF format. I found the following suggestion [1] for converting SWF to MP4 using gnash and ffmpeg, but gnash doesn't appear to be available in the Fedora repos any more. Attempting to download the source from gnu.org and build has lead to a couple of cycles of make errors, search for the missing packages, reinstall, repeat and I'm hoping there might be a better solution. Has anyone done a similar conversion or could offer suggestions? TIA! Google Chrome won't die

Attempting to terminate google chrome by clicking the "X" window decoration closes sometimes leaves some of chrome's back end in existence. When this happens, further attempts to start chrome fail and parts of the system lock up in strange ways. Entering "$ chrome" into a shell locks up the shell; "^C" and "^Z" have no effect; the process(es) can't be killed by using "kill -9 <whatever>"; if the user logs out, no login is possible and the system has to be rebooted. Terminating chrome by using the build in exit command: [Customize and control Google Chrome]->Exit work OK. Has anyone else seen this? What's going on? Thanks - jon

installing Fedora 26 to a SSD

Hi, Have we got to the stage where the default install options for Fedora 26 work fine with a SSD, or should I be tweaking something? At the moment I've let it install with whatever parameters it does by itself. All I did was change from using LVM to EXT4 (I see absolutely no advantage to using LVM on a single-disc computer, and a lot of serious annoyances should I pull out a drive to read it on another computer). And went with the boot, system root, and swap partitions that it offers. -- Trying out Thunderbird for mail. 5... 4... 3... 2... ONE! Email has gone Boilerplate: All mail to this mailbox is automatically deleted, there is no point trying to privately email me, I only get to see the messages posted to the mailing list.

Is yumex working?

I can only use yumex to install or update one or two packages.... Does anyone facing the same problem? F26 GTK icons corrupted sometimes

Anyone else seeing that? When starting GTK applications such as Claws Mail or Audacious, a few icons are not displayed correctly and contain garbage. Such as the small magnifying glass icon left of the search field. Or the attachments icon. Working with the programs, window refreshes usually fix the damage, but it's odd and must be something that has crept into GNOME Shell.

Gnome Desktop no Longer Shows Application Icons on Upgrade from F25 to F26

Hi, I have used dnf system-upgrade to upgrade my F25 system to F26 and now all the shortcuts on my Desktop no longer display their configured icons, they display a text page icon instead. Under KDE they continue to display fine. I tried looking at the properties of the thunderbird shortcut, clicked on the text icon to navigate to where the thunderbird icons were and re-selected the icon, but that made no difference to the icon displayed. Why is the upgrade from F25 to F26 now refusing to display proper icons for the shortcuts? regards, Steve

Fedora-26: KDE Scrollbars no longer have arrows at their ends

Just upgraded from f25 to f26. Most programs run better, but scrollbars no longer have arrows at their upper and lower ends. System Settings used to have a function to control this, but it seems to be gone, both in native KDE and Gnome applications. How are scrollbars now controlled in KDE? Thanks - jon

pgrep -f 'foo' | wc -l -- curiousity!

Hey peeps. From a fed/centos cmdline... pgrep -f "foo" | wc -l will return 0 -- if "foo" doesn't exist in the procTBL, and something else if "foo" is running. The curiousity... When I have a simple php <?php $f="pgrep -f 'foo' | wc -l"; $t=`$f`; print $t ?> $t isn't 0!! -- it's actually 1, or something else if foo is running.. Any ideas why?? I've used the different methods php provides to "run" shell/.cmdline processes. I get the same results. Now.. I can do something like ps aux | grep 'foo' | grep -v 'grep' | wc -l and get the correct results within the php as well as the shell. Didn't find anything via the 'net or SO on this.. Thoughts/comments??

Gentle People: I hate to interrupt your Fedora 26 party, but well here goes a dose of reality from the USER's PROSPECTIVE! 1) First of all F26's performance is very poor. its a CPU hog and DRAM ! I installed F26 in a Virtual Box (VBox) on a two processor machine and it is so slow that it is barely usable. In the _same environment_ CentOS performs with quite excellent performance. You have a massive performance problem here! 2) Your new menu system is a joke. I use the system for application code development so I want Text Editor windows and shells. Why did you hide these in the basement and the very bottom of the menu system? Also your menus are slow and cumbersome. What was wrong with the previous menu system? Is this simply change for the sake of change? Have your group been taken over by Marketing? 3) Look and feel. Why in the name of hell did you want this look and feel? I use Linux for application code development. I want Text Editors, shell Windows, gcc, gdb , and ddd. Why are all the engineering tools hidden? If I wanted the look and feel of Windows I would buy windows! 4) Text Editor: Go back to the old one it works way better! 5) Your new Services configuration is a blithering disaster! Please bring back the configuration GUIs for Services and Users. Keep in mind here I am not a Linux System administrator! I am a user! I perform a complex configuration of user and group numbers to maintain NFS compatibility with Solaris. This configuration is difficult even with the GUIs, without them forget it. 6) Cut and paste: I don't know what you did to that! (Well it use to work)! P.S. Solaris has a great User I/F GUI for cut and paste. 6) Yum and rpm: Please print to the screen the directories where S/W is installed. So that I don't have to waste time going looking for it. 7) Convenience: STOP CHANGING THE CONFIGURATION INTERFACES. Every time you change the configuration methodology we the users have to waste hours and even days learning the new configuration methodology. 8) Are you on drugs? What in the hell gave you the insane idea that a command line interface for configuration was some how better that a GUI? Please consider carefully the possibility that you are going in the wrong direction! Overall I continue to be disappointed in Fedora and thank heavens for CentOS. Thomas Dineen

I prefer not watching the blank screen with the egg turning into an F and normally remove rhgb from /etc/default/grub. That is not having the desired effect on this Fedora-26 system. How to disable the Qt automatic HiDPI scaling?

Hi! I run GNOME on a 2560x1440 resolution display where I disabled the "double scaling" (not sure how it's called). So one pixel is one dot. Unfortunately when running Qt applications such as VLC for example they autoscale to 1 dot for 4 pixels making those huge and taking most of my display area. When on dual screen they even recognize which screen is HiDPI and therefore automatically scale back on the non HiDPI screen kind of forcing me to run all my Qt apps on that external screen. Unfortunately I do not always have an external screen to save me... So is there a way (like with GNOME) to disable this feature and have Qt apps display "normally"? Thank you. Fred

XDG – creating submenus

Hi, ….after installing 'libre office' on my computer, the lauchers of the various applications that are part of libre office, were visible on the desktop individually (in a separate and independent way). I wanted to group all these launchers, on my desktop, inside a “submenu” (and this accomplishment can also be a general requirement for displaying programs grupper by “categories” on the desktop ). is systemd killing my sessions?

Aug 7 11:07:57 nbecker7 systemd-logind: Removed session 154. I'm trying to use x2go, but it seems when I try to suspend/resume a session it isn't working - on reconnect a new session is started. Is the system? The above log message suggests maybe. In logind.conf I see: #KillUserProcesses=no Supposedly, the compiled-in default is "no", but is that not true? (I know, I could just change the file and reboot but I can't reboot this machine now).

Disappearing files

Hi all, Long time Linux user, new Fedora user (well, at least since FC 3), so be gentle. I installed asterisk and dahdi from source and they were working great, but when I reboot one of two things happens: 1. Ownership of /var/lib/asterisk and /var/run/asterisk is reset from group "asterisk" to "root". 2. The /var/run/asterisk folder disappears completely. If I change them back, my asterisk setup works fine, but after a reboot, one of those two happens again. What could be mucking with my permissions (and removing a folder!?) in the boot process? There might be some mathematica notebooks out there, but they are not free, and cannot translate to code that we can use such as octave, or maxima. I have found a Geogebra page which does have the filled pentagons https://www.geogebra.org/material/show/id/AfNmbnDD But I would prefer it be in metapost. Not all my machines have texlive, not all of them have java as well. I hope that with a bit of time, someone who knows metapost can help translate the code from the hoist point website which is more precise. Askbot not sending email notification on first postings

cross posting this on users@ and devel@, I'm not sure who all regularly participates on askbot.fedoraproject.org as it's mainly user to user. The gist of this problem is you set up some keywords/tags and if someone posts a question with one of those tags, you get an email. Neat because I don't want emails for every question posted, just the topics I'm going to be useful answering. Problem is, I don't get an email notification for the original posting. I only get followup emails from people answering or commenting to the question. I already filed bugs upstream and downstream: https://github.com/ASKBOT/askbot-devel/issues/705 https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/6174 Question is, has anyone else experienced this? It's been a couple weeks since I posted the upstream bug without a reply and it seems like a really big bug to be going on this long if everyone's affected by it. Use exact coordinates as recommended in http://www.hoist-point.com/soccerball.htm I created one using gnuplot but it is just an approximation, the numbers are not correct. The picture can be found http://plotshare.com/index.ws/plot/166954608 It is not mathematically correct, I believe that using metapost it can be drawn more precise, but my skills are limited. libGL mess with nvidia drivers

Just swapped nouveau out for the nvidia driver from rpmfusion following https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA. Basically I did dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-340xx akmod-nvidia-340xx "kernel-devel- uname-r == $(uname -r)" dnf update -y Reboot and startx and only one (of 2) monitor was working, the other was blank. Can someone post which libGL they have installed on their system and how they got the whole thing to work? Thanks!

I have enabled html5, and yet youtube claims Browser does not currently recognize any of video formats available Click here to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video. When I do click on "Click here ....etc" I get the same page tat I access directly with the URL https://www.youtube.com/html5 and it shows The HTML5 player is currently used when possible. For a sample live video, I clicked on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtU_mdL2vBM just in case you wanted to know what I clicked on. Thanx!!

Problem with K3B.

Hi Everybody , When starting K3B I get the following message : System configuration problem. Unable to find cdrskin executable. K3B uses cdrskin in place of cdrecord. Solution : Install the libburn package which contains cdrskin. Question : How to manage and what is the essence of the problem ? Burning CD's and DVD's works fine. So long nouveau

Well I've been using my newly installed fedora 26 boot partition for all of a half day, and the nouveau driver just completely froze up the display (exactly the same thing that happened on fedora 24 with nouveau). I guess I'm off to look through the logs for any info and then install the rpmfusion nvidia binaries.

[F25] Help: latest update broke nvidia driver

After updating my F25 installation (which included installing kernel-10-11-12-200) I can no longer boot X (w/ startx). rpm -qa | fgrep kmod-nvidia-4.11.12 returns kmod-nvidia-4.11.12-200.fc25.x86_64-375.66-3.fc25.x86_64 so the kernel module gets built and installed. But I see Aug 2 21:41:11 pons kernel: nvidia: Unknown symbol mcount (err 0) in /var/log/messages which I've not seen before. I removed the module with dnf and rebuilt it with akmods (which again produced the "unknown symbol" message, and X still won't boot. Is anyone else having this problem? Suggestions for a fix? -Sherman

compiling dahdi-linux kernel module

The dahdi kernel module (used by asterisk for some Digium telephony cards, including the one I have) is not included in Fedora because it is not free software. The dahdi configuration tools are included, but not the kernel module. The software is free as in beer, it can be downloaded and built, and I have successfully done that in the past. However, the last time the kernel module compiled successfully was back at kernel-4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64 . 686 w/o 64: Whence?

I downloaded F26 and tried to install it to an old T42 Thinkpad (which currently has F22; I haven't been using it). It says it can't even boot, but needs 686 architecture withOUT 64-bit. So I went back to getfedora.org, and started looking-&-mousing around. (I want Gnome2 with Mate, or if not that, with Xfce.) Is it even there?

NFS4 kerberos

I've setup a kdc server and I'm able to kinit from my client and get a ticket for ssh, nfs. I'm noticing nfs slow to mount, and disconnects randomly when mounted with sec=krb5p. When I mount insecurely this does not happen. I read that this has to do with gss but have not found a solution. thanks.

Print crossword puzzle -

This is a new install, updated, Fedora-26 using XFCE, however I believe the problem began with Fedora-24. I print several puzzles every day usin Firefox, puzzles presented in pdf print without any trouble, however those that require Flash stop working when the Fedora print window pops up, it looks normal but does not display/recognize my printer, the printer name is missing/blank. I am forced to use SeaMonkey to print the flash sites such as: http://puzzles.usatoday.com/ Using Firefox the line that says "Print to Printer:" simply shows "No Printer." SeaMonkey shows the printer and prints. It seems Firefox should do the same and it used to ... I've googled this extensively but never come near finding an answer. I would prefer not having to use a second browser to print puzzles. tried VMware Wkst. 12.5.6, also 12.5.7 ... no change ... even the hack to get the additional virtual network interfaces, nothing helped ... maybe the next release of VMware Wkst. 12.5.8 will run ... as VMware Wkst. is essential for me, there is no way having Linux instead of Windows; the decision to try it with Fedora is the feature of inplace upgrade and keep it up-to-date ... I'll keep my old windows running as log as the hardware is working ...

I have managed to hose something in my account. In Fedora 24 about 2/3 of the time when I login the only item in Computer was "File System" and inserted media (CD/USB) neither mounts or appears. The other 1/3 of the time it worked. Not good. But the clock is ticking on F24 now so I updated to Fedora 25 and it got worse. I get entries for every mount point, tmp, sys, everything plus I get desktop icons for them all too. This is on Mate if you are wondering why I have icons on the desktop. But at least it is now consistent, it happens every time. Made a fresh account and logged into it and everything works normally. Tried a couple of times and it appears reliable. So whatever is wrong it is just in my account but I can't figure out what got corrupted. Google is little help, all the automagic plumbing has been rewritten so many times most hits are to pages discussing obviously wrong things. While logged out I have tried removing .gvfs, anything suspicious in ~/.config ~/.local, like gvfs-metadata, systemd/user, .ccache, .dbus, Even looked in /var/tmp for leftover cruft. So what file does control the current automagic stuff? Upside is I have finally seen accelerated 3d/video decode in a VM without a Kaboom so as usual, upgrading brings new shiny.
