smartmontools still "monitoring" a replaced hard drive. [SOLVED]
by William
Good morning everyone,
After reading all your messages (a few times), re-examining the man
pages (a few times), and re-visiting the smartmontools web site, I
believe the real problem was that I was seriously misunderstanding the
"Type" column. I thought that it meant that some attributes were
currently at "Pre-fail" levels, and the others were at "Old_age"
levels. I now understand that this column is simply telling me whether
a given attribute
a. will be an indication that the drive *might* be about to fail
if/when in the future it exceeds its threshold, or
b. is simply exceeding its expected lifetime when it exceeds its
threshold (so the threshold value is a life expectancy).
Stan asked/said:
> So, you only have a single disk in the system, /dev/sda.
correct.
> Well, the format should be the same, but surely if the driv
> was failing the overall result wasn't Passed?...
This apparently was a result of my misunderstanding the "Type" column.
I sit corrected.
> They are all defaulting to /dev/sda since it is the only
> disk on your system. A question mark means...
I now understand. Thank-you.

I needed a magnifying glass to do it, but I did it. You're correct;
they match.

I did it. I see the error message. Thank-you.

(sigh) Now I need a calculator and a magnifying glass! (just kidding)
I did it. ...about 7 months. That's about right.

* 2 waste collection trucks each week.
* other occasional trucks (moving vans, delivery/pick-up of "roll-off"
waste containers, etc.).
* large aircraft overhead (I'm directly under one airport approachway
for the city's airport about a mile away.).
* thunder from close lightning strikes in summer thunderstorms.
Nothing really serious. But I see Tony notes the numbers are ok for
Seagate drives.
> It's getting pretty warm there.
The workstation is along the house's north wall with a window above it.
It's slightly chilly in winter (I often need to wear a windbreaker), and
slightly warm (mid 80s degrees F, about 30 degrees C in the late
afternoon) in summer.
> Do you have a copy of what it was showing last time? smartctl...
No. But I'm now convinced. Thank-you.
Tony said:
> It's normal for Seagate drives.
Good. Thank-you.
In the midst of all this, I discovered a new graphical tool for
smartmontools. It's called "GSmartControl". Its home page is here:
It's available in Fedora repositories. I installed it and tried it.
Looks good. Maybe others will find it helpful.
I thank everyone for their help. I'm marking this thread solved.

Non-responsive maintainer: joost
by Richard Shaw
Per the policy I am asking here if anyone knows how to get in touch with
joost (joost(a)cnoc.nl).
I have bug reports for both fpc and lazarus that have gone for weeks
without any response and it's preventing me from building cqrlog on armv7hl
in rawhide due to lazbuild and hedgewars has a segmentation fault due to a
bug in fpc.
I have tried direct emails with no response.

Scroll Bars with Arrows Wanted
by Jonathan Ryshpan
How can I set up my system so that windows have scroll bars with
arrows. The mouse scroll wheel works OK for vertical scrolling, but
not for horizontal. I now need to edit a spread sheet with 29 columns.
Grabbing the line in the scroll bar is tedious and finicky. I'd like
this for native KDE applications, Gnome applications running under KDE,
Firefox, and Chrome.
System is Fedora-27 with all updates installed.

dnf group list command is broken after system update on Fedora 27

Hello all
Tonight I installed Fedora 27 and after I ran a dnf upgrade to update all

yum group list gives me the same error as well.. Any ideas on what I should
do to fix this? It is strange that this distro's package manager would
break after a single system upgrade. All help is greatly appreciated! thanks

KDE Applications Launcher becomes unresponsive
by Jonathan Ryshpan
If I click on the KDE Applications Launcher and then change desktops
while the Launcher popup is visible, the Launcher popup disappears
(normal) but then does not pop up when I click on the Launcher (bad);
the Launcher behaves normally otherwise. This behavior is only for my
account; using other accounts on the same machine the Launcher behaves
normally. When new launchers are installed on the taskbar they behave
in the same way.
Any ideas on how to investigate?

Which Mysql Packages are Better to use in Fedora 27
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
I need to install mysql for registration with netbeans for its
database interfacing processes. Looking for mysql in the repositories
I've found community-mysql and mariadb packages, does anyone have any
advice as which of those two is the better environment to use, and
whether or not the other packages in the repository that provide tools
for interfacing to mysql will function with either?

OT - rm different on Ubuntu than Fedora
by Tim
Hi,
Off-topic, but I struck an oddity trying to help a friend using Ubuntu
send a wayward Firefox back to un-munged condition. I laboriously gave
him instructions over the phone to type in:
rm -rfd .cache/mozilla/firefox
Only to have it chuck a hissy fit and claim the options were invalid.
I tried changing the r option to R, with no further success. My quick
search for on-line man pages for Unbuntu didn't show anything different
than the options that would work in Fedora.
Surely it should have worked? My tests with a mocked up directory
structure on my Fedora installation worked without a hitch.
I did check he was in the right place, to begin with, by getting him to
first enter in:
ls .cache/mozilla/firefox
Peruse the results, then change the command at the beginning of the
line.
In the end I went through another set of laborious instructions to see
the hidden files in his file browser, and make his was through to the
right path.
It wasn't helped by his (very) old Ubuntu installation having no menus,
so had to figure out how to open a terminal without being able to see
what he was doing, likewise for where they'd stashed the file browser.
