libreoffice (f29) insert image pdf (filter not found)
by Neal Becker
I have libreoffice suite installed on F29. When I try to insert an image
into a writer doc (pdf), I get the rather non-informative message "Image
Filter not found".
Something is very broken with this F29 installation. I'm sure this worked
on F28. I have libreoffice-pdfimport installed.
There are no other console messages.

Problem starting Arduino IDE 1.0.6 on Fedora 28
by Jon Ingason
I need to download firmware for my 3D printer (K8000) with Arduino IDE
1.0.6 since Arduino IDE 1.8.5 won't work. I downloaded Arduino IDE 1.0.6
from Arduinos' website. When I start Adruino IDE I get following:
arduino-1.0.6]$ ./arduino
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
at processing.app.Preferences.setColor(Preferences.java:863)
at processing.app.Preferences.init(Preferences.java:274)

sun.awt.HeadlessToolkit.getMenuShortcutKeyMask(HeadlessToolkit.java:236)
at processing.core.PApplet.<clinit>(Unknown Source)
... 3 more
arduino-1.0.6]$
I am running arduino on Fedora 28 Gnome Workstation with both Xorg and
Waylnd. Same result in both.
Now I started Debian (Jessie) in KVM/qemu from the virtual manual.
There I could start Arduino IDE 1.0.6 without problem.
Fedora 28 Gnome Workstation

Why can I run Arduino IDE 1.0.6 on the Debian but not om Fedora?

Network Manager not Retaining Wifi Password
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
After the last system update in F28 Network Manager is not
retaining the wifi password entered into its security tab. When I enter
the password and select apply then 'OK' to exit network manager, when I
get back in the password is gone. Is anyone else seeing this issue or
have any tips on how to rectify this issue?

Steve

F28 (upgraded) failing boot
by Beartooth
I never put F28 onto my wife's machine, because I had too
much trouble with it on mine. I didn't mean to now, except
temporarily. I ran dnf upgrade, then did the dnf system upgrade, giving
the version to upgrade to as 28.
Then I did the special system-upgrade reboot -- and it hung. I
tried rebooting several times, but succeeded only in getting it to hang
on a different error message, one that it now gets every time.
That message is long, complex, and ambiguous in several places,
at least to the uninitiated. It begins by saying something like "You are
now in emergency mode." Then it talks about logging in a/o giving
commands, some as root. Finally it says you can try to continue by
hitting ^D; I've done that, and it tries to reboot but hangs with what
seems the same message.
I tried using UCBD, which did boot; but it was way over my head.
So I tried a few options like boot and install; no joy. All the things I
thought might help (essentially the ones not meant for exploring
hardware) did me no good. I did try its supergrub2disk, which I've used
before on its own, but got nowhere with that, either.
That PC is now running a live medium of F29. I could tell it to
install to hard drive; or I could burn a medium for netinstall. (She does
say she has not done significant work on her important data since the
backups I made before upgrading her to F27.)

Gimp monstrosity
by Tom Horsley
Who decided that gray on gray icons were a good idea
in new default gimp theme? Thank God I can change the
theme and icon selections in preferences :-).
Now if there was only a preference to scale everything
up so the text is big enough to see on a 4K monitor.
(And why does the tools window take 5 or 10 seconds
to go away after I quit?)

MaxMind RPMs (GeoIP2::Database::Reader)
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fedora28 system and am trying to build
GeoIP2::Database::Reader and it requires a number of the MaxMind GeoIP
RPMs. I'd rather not build them from scratch. Does anyone know where
there is a MaxMiind RPM repository or RPMs that will work for this?
I also need IP::Country::DB_File.
Perhaps you know where there is a GeoIP2::Database::Reader RPM for
fedora28 already available?

Kernel 4.19
by SternData
dnf updates are not picking up kernel-4.19.2. My current kernel is
4.18.18-300.fc29.x86_64
I've tried a "dnf clear all", followed by a "dnf update", but it doesn't
find anything new (at least the new kernel).
Any ideas?

Gtk for newest version of Pychess - F29/F28
by Joerg Lechner
Hi,
would like to run the newest version of Pychess on F28/F29.
That`s my result:
Installiert:
pychess-0.99.3-1.py37.noarch
Fertig.
[joerg@localhost ~]$ pychess
/usr/local/bin/pychess:17: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
from gi.repository import Gtk, Gdk
Failed to create splash screen
ERROR: Could not import modules.
Please try to run pychess as stated in the INSTALL file
[joerg@localhost ~]$
I have problems to find and install the "right" version of Gtk for pychess-0.99.3-1.py37.noarch.
Did anyone install pychess-0.99.3-1.py37.noarch on F29/F28?
Kind regards

Just switched to Fedora 28
by Frank McCormick
I am back on Fedora after a couple of years away.
One of the first things I did was to install Icewm, and I am a little
surprised at how old the Fedora version if (1.38).
Is there a way to get a newer version such as 1.43 in the Git repository
without resorting to compiling it myself?
Thanks
