printer and Fedora support.

I'm having to replace my 5-year old desktop printer. Like any good project, I start with requirements! 1. desktop printer. 2. the manufacturer provides real support for the printer running on Fedora as well as windows-7. 3. has printing, scanning, and copying. 4. color and black-and-white, colors are correct when printing from Fedora as well as when from windows-7. 5. at least 600 dpi. 6. USB cable connection (not ethernet or wi-fi) between printer and workstation's tower. 7. either laser or LED, not ink-jet (I'm in a very low-humidity climate). I am especially concerned with requirement #1, and that's why I'm asking this list. What fulfils all the above requirements? Support needs to be more than simply providing a driver for me to download. The at least 600 DPI has to be real, not merely "effective", "simulated", etc. My now dead printer, a Xerox Workcentre 6015, claimed either 1200x1200 or 1200x2400 resolution, but I only got 600 real dots per inch, both in windows-7 and in Fedora. When printing from Fedora, colors were not even close, but were ok when printing from windows-7. Which is better overall: laser or LED? Thank-you for your advice. Bill.

F26 update: gnome-terminal doesn't launch; locale issues

I just did an update from F25 to F26 via dnf. After it boots, I can no longer start gnome terminal (nothing shows). If I ssh into the machine and try it remotely, I see the following: $ gnome-terminal (process:3586): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached So it looks like there is a locale issue in my update. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Switching to Wayland on F27

problems to install NetBeans 8 on fedora 27

Hi, I installed many times NetBeans in a linux environment, without problems ... But now I have problems to do it , after then I installed fedora 27. When I try the installation, the output that I get is : -------------------- [root@localhost Downloads]#* ./netbeans-8.2-linux.sh <http://netbeans-8.2-linux.sh>* Configuring the installer... Searching for JVM on the system... Extracting installation data... *Running the installer wizard...* *Can`t initialize UIRunning in headless mode* *Exception: java.awt.HeadlessException thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread "main"* -------------------- This is a problem about the java environment ? it can be also a problem with the graphical environment of fedora ... (?) I worked around many time without a result... Can I have some help please ? Thank you regards Angelo

Thunderbird issue (OT).

Good morning, When I try to sign in to a (verizon) yahoo e-mail account via Thunderbird, it takes several seconds to get a response, then I often get this error message: ------ Thunderbird The current operation on 'Inbox' did not succeed. The mail server for account [my e-mail account] responded: [CLIENTBUG] SELECT Command is not valid in this state. ------ I then have to exit Thunderbird, and sign in again to all the accounts I want to connect to. I usually have to do this 2-4 times before it finally downloads the folder structure and message headers successfully (though v-e-r-y slowly). I experience this problem randomly but frequently (almost daily) with all 6 of my (verizon) yahoo accounts. My incoming server is set to "imap.mail.yahoo.com:993"; my outgoing server is set to "smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465"; connection security is set to "SSL/TLS". Yahoo e-mail does not work properly in my browser, so that's not a good work-around. I've checked both yahoo and Thunderbird on-line help; I get nothing really helpful, though I notice the problem is not unique to me. What's the real cause of this problem, and what do I fix it? Mate Session + child Caja consuming 98% of io badwidth to/from boot drive

I have not seen this before, so I do not know what might be causing this. All tasks are quiescent, except that I am watching a youtube video. So I stopped the YT video and waited to see if the activity of Caja would abate. NOP!!! It stays at 92 to 98 %

gthumb crash (after enabling vdpau?)

I recently replaced my graphics card (with NVIDIA GT 710). A newer nvidia module was installed kmod-nvidia-340xx-4.15.7-200 -> kmod-nvidia-390.42-1 I also enabled VDPAU which was incorrectly installed until now. Reinstalling both packages does not improve the situation. Is gthumb still maintained? https://github.com/GNOME/gthumb suggests perusing https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/gthumb which is not present. Still, too many packages are involved, not the least X/nvidia ones. Is anyone else seeing this problem? I do not want to log a bug if this is the result of my system long update history, but I do want to resolve this. What is target #1?

I see fedora 28 schedule says release is tomorrow, then there is another release next week for target #1. What on earth does that mean? (I clicked on the link and the word "target" does not appear in in the page it takes me to, so the meaning seems well disguised).

Anyone know the latest rumor as to when 28 general release will hit? I have two of my four running on 28 beta and I rather like it. Things just keep getting better and better. Fedora is a beautiful example of a Kaiser (constant improvement) OS. I use to be on an RHEL clone. RHEL, by design, is an anti-Kaisen OS and I almost went INSANE!
