[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

Updated info about disabling tracker related processes?

Hello, I have recently begun to use again gnome session and I have reinstalled nautilus. I see that nautilus depends on tracker and so the reinstall put in tracker and its things And this morning in my F28 system with SSD disk (I don't imagine on a normal sata based environment) I had to kill tracker-extract and tacker-miner processes because they hogged my cpu for several minutes.. Searching with google I found different info about disabling (or at least calm down) tracker, but they all seem not updated, in the sense that several commands/services are not present in my f28 environment. Any pointer about configuring and/or disabling it? Thanks in advance, Gianluca

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.

Hello, I get *Failed to start Load Kernel Modules* during the boot. Everytime Kernel is updated VirtualBox modules fail I have to reboot into the new Kernel, run the following commands and then it starts working. $ sudo akmods --force $ sudo dracut -v -f $ sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg Then everything starts working again and the boot error goes away. Install on Zotac Zbox CI327?

Hello there, (after a looong time not using Fedora, just back to it!) I've tried installing Fedora on a Zotac Zbox CI327 (Intel Celeron N3450 inside) but this happens to fail. I've tried F25 but it has not the right kernel to make it (I've read about 4.10 minimum), then tried F26-Alpha-1.7 Live and Rawhide-20170518 Live but none could reach the graphical login. They both boot, some steps take a lot of time and I end up in a state I don't understand but which is not friendly ;-). How to turn on networking from rescue boot

So... I did a "sudo dnf upgrade" and things seemed to do well. However, when I rebooted, it hangs on bootup with the statment "Holding until bootup processes complete" or something like that -- I'm doing this from memory. I tried with a couple of older kernels, but they also hung. I assume that this is some transient thing associated with the upgrade. Over the years, I've had glitches appear on an upgrade and disappear on the next upgrade. Accordingly, I'd like to boot into rescue mode and see if I can upgrade again. However, I've forgotten how to turn on wifi networking from rescue mode. Can anybody point me to a tutorial? Thanks, billo

SSH private keys?

At one point Fedora had something (keyring?) that would allow me to unlock my SSH private keys and it would keep the unlocked key available so I could ssh without having to unlock my key every time. I typically run a simple "terminal" window and then "ssh <hostname>" since my key is not retained unlocked I'm prompted for a password. Fast forward to today, the system had been reinstalled (new hardware, new disks, etc) and I no longer have that ability. I'm currently runn Fedora 28 and the desktop is "Gnome", I'm sure it is just a matter of installing/configuring/running the correct application.... but which one? Thanks, Jeff

suspends shutdowns system instead of suspending

Hi, A new bug has cropped up on my system Dell Precision 5510 running Fedora 25 Plasma Desktop. Anytime I suspend my device it shutdowns and obviously I lose all my unsaved work. I have tried all the kernel currently installed on my system 4.10.10-200.fc25.x86_64, 4.10.9, and 4.10.8. I have also tried downgrading systemd to systemd-231-10.fc25.x86_64. language choose menu in slick greeter

I just install F28/i686/MATE desktop, and it's login screen has not menu for language selection. And instead of lightdm-gtk there is slick greeter. Know anyone, when it is possible to configure slick for language selection? Or I should rather switch back to lightdm-gtk? Mate + F28

Folks, shortly after F28 was released I upgraded one of my systems to F28 using fedup. Since that day, despite all the updates I have installed, I still cannot run the MATE desktop on that system. Before the upgrade, when the system ran F27, I ran MATE without any problems. Now as soon as I login I get a screen that is completely messed up :-(. However, if instead of the MATE desktop I select the Gnome Classic desktop, it appears just fine and I can use it. This problem with F28 and MATE does not affect just this one system, I upgraded a second system and created to F28 VMs, one under VirtualBox and one under VMware. Of these 4 F28 systems, the only one that is usable with the MATE desktop is the VM under VirtualBox. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem? As I said this worked fine under F27. I am reluctant to upgrade my 2 primary systems until this issue is resolved. VDQ "dm"

This has to be a Very Dumb Question, but what is the difference between a "display manager" and a "desktop manager"? I'm trying to run MATE on F28, and succeeding to the extent that I do have a more or less MATE-like GUI, but only by grace of still having an F26 rescue kernel. (Two PCs without that kernel are unable to give any GUI at all. All I can do is keep a console open and run dnf upgrade once or twice a day, using an F28 rescue kernel, with reboots whenever any kernel is mentioned.) And this GUI does not afford me the panel applets I use most. In quest of better, I've been experimenting with various apps called *dm. Most do better than lightdm (which I started with), but not yet a whole lot better. Some will say I oughtn't to run Fedora at all, but at this point my accumulated ignorance has reached a level where any other distro would tie me up in even more knots.

Display Manager and applets

Unless I'm more confused than usual, I'm currently running lxdm (set to MATE) on F28. I'm glad to have a display manager that works; but it denies me the two applets I use most. I normally restrict each workspace to a single app, and keep 18 spaces open (mostly with eight or ten in actual use); but the current setup only allows me two workspaces, causing a clutter. Also, eyes in each of four panels are by far the easiest way for my ancient eyeballs to find the mouse cursor; and the current setup has no eyes at all, afaict. portable (non-live) Fedora on an external USB drive

Similar to an earlier thread [portable (really) Fedora on stick], I am trying to create a portable Fedora 27 install on an external USB hard drive. I have done this in the past as recently as Fedora 14, but things have changed since then, and I seem to be hitting some unexpected issues.... The install proceeds as expected, no apparent errors, etc. But then when I go to boot the external drive, it immediately displays "Operation System not found" - Note that is is "Operation", *not* "Operating". Googling, I found suggestions regarding setting boot flags which I have tried to no avail. In the thread mentioned above, there was a step to use dracut to rebuild the initramfs files, which I have done, again to no avail. (This step was done by using the install USB stick, the "troubleshoot" option, and then chroot'ing into /mnt/sysimage). Any suggestions as to what I should try next? Some additional info.... Internal drive has been wiped, and is not bootable. External USB drive is 4TB, and has a GPT partition table using the default layout provided by the installer.

Hi. Looking at deploying test webapps. Be easy! I'm not the sysadmin/devops. I've been looking at different sites/vids to see what's involved with really setting up the OS for the webapp deployment. Selinux appears to play a major role in getting everything "right". Anyone here want to play the role of hired gun for a short convo in how al of this gets setup? Also, given that centos is behind in terms of php/python/etc.. are there "better" OS/platforms to use? Thoughts/comments .. thanks

Firefox has a feature that (I hope) might well be universal. If I highlight a URL which my mailer (Alpine) breaks into several lines and then paste it in, Ffx takes care of the nonce line breaks, going right to the site. But if I copy that URL (sometimes, as with changing an xfinity password, many seeming lines long) into any other browser, *I* have to eliminate all the line breaks (and sometimes, not always, introduced extraneous characters such as % a/o angle brackets). video display problem -

Until recently VLC would display .3gp video clips from an iPhone full screen on this 24" monitor. Now they are very small, perhaps less than a two inch square. This is the rpmfusion vlc on Fedora 27. I suspect Apple has changed something. Am I the only one seeing this problem? Hello, I'm using the latest ACM LaTeX class (version 1.53): https://www.acm.org/binaries/content/assets/publications/ consolidated-tex-template/acmart-master.zip I've installed the required packages. With Fedora 27, no problem. Instead, with Fedora 28, when I run the following command: $ pdflatex sample-sigconf I get the following error: kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+540/600 --dpi 540 txsys mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for txsys. mktexpk: perhaps txsys is missing from the map file. kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log. ) !pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file txsys): Font txsys at 540 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! As an alternative, I can use latex+dvipdfmx commands to first generate a DVI and then convert it to a PDF. However, the resulting PDF looks different from the one contained in the acmart-master.zip file. I've just submitted a bug on Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1595278 Any idea? Manpage of cpu power make no mention of the selection of governor. How can set the governor to be the user mode governor instead of the performance governor and not the ondemand governor? If I can permanently set that governor, next I want to set the cpu frequency (for all cores) to 2134000Hz permanently. Reason I am posting this is because the normal speed of the cores is 2.8GHz, and that is causing numerous kerneloops interrupts (overheating). Fans are at full speed all the time, as I can hear them :) :) When I set the speed manually (as root) like this: for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8; do echo 2134000 > cpu$i/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq done then kerneloops are greatly reduced. Every kerneloops is accompanied by mce: So, it has to be the heat. But I do not want to do this loop every time I boot up. I want to have set once and for all!!! Thanx!!!

Dear all, I just noticed a very weird problem on my workstation. Although the machine has 64 GB of RAM installed, $ head -n 1 /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 2400748 kB that is, only a few gigabytes are actually available. Unfortunately I don't have physical access to the machine, which is a HP desktop bought last fall. According to dmesg, the model is something like [ 0.000000] DMI: HP HP EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR/8298, BIOS P01 Ver. 02.06 06/09/2017 Also according to dmesg, it appears that the kernel *does* see all 64 gigs, BUT OVER 60 GB IS RESERVED MEMORY!! [ 0.000000] Memory: 2326720K/66985176K available (12300K kernel code, 1568K rwdata, 3836K rodata, 2124K init, 1368K bss, 64658456K reserved, 0K cma-reserved) Does anyone have any idea of what could be going on? Could LightDM be bad?? (LONG)

I keep three PCs on my desk, running Fedora behind a KVM switch: #1 is my present biggest fastest, #2 its predecessor, and #3 that one's predecessor; I try try keep them as similar as is feasible. They've all been having troubles for months, which have only gotten worse. Under F27, they kept filling up with some sort of cruft, to the point of refusing dnf upgrade; but when I found any of the cruft, it was in places where I dared not lay about me with a cyber-battleaxe. I jumped to F28 the day of release. At this point, none of the three is usable at all without some dodge or other. #2 and #3 have each been wiped, twice, with different releases of DBAN, followed each time with a netinstall of F28 with Mate, and then dnf upgrade daily. All their boot messages show green OK. Those end with "Started Light Display Manager." Usually they proceed to a login box in front of the F28 display of blue light-conducting fibers. That accepts my password, churns a little way, and ends with a monitor full of blue horizontal lines, plus a few white lines in the middle and at the bottom; there is nothing legible. By doing Alt-Ctrl-F2, I get a display which lets me log in as root; I keep doing dnf upgrades, and trying startx, every day. I also reboot whenever there's a kernel change. Startx always flashes a couple times, then fails with a few lines of text, beginning with an attempt to adopt my monitor size (called "1920 1080" -- not 1920x1080),losing contact, and ending by saying that the Xserver "terminated successfully." I'd like to try replacing LDM with something else; how do I do that?? (I like Mate well, and would prefer not to swap it out,too) Finally, #1 has two F28 kernels -- which do no better than on #2 nor #3 -- and a rescue kernel from F26. Sic. Twenty-six, not 27 nor 28. But that rescue kernel does support almost my whole GUI (I miss Pan badly.), and I don't have to descend to the console. #1 got F28 by upgrading with dnf from F27, and still has a lot of stuff on it that I'd rather copy to #2 and #3 directly than by way of solid state storage, if I dare risk malware. Fedora's OwnCloud and NextCloud Broke - What I did

When I upgraded to F28, OwnCloud stopped working. Another reported the same problem with NextCloud. The problem has been reported in bugzilla [1] as Cannot login after upgrading from F27 to F28. Patrick Reeb provided a fix with a fix-owncloud [2] script which downgrades php-sabre to F25. Because both of the Fedora packages of OwnCloud and NextCloud are dated I decided to use the NextCloud zip package of their current version 13. Basically what I did was to install Fedora's NextCloud package to get the basic configuration files and then removed the package so all what was left was configuration files with a .rpmsave extension. Using the nextcloud-13.0.4.zip package [3] I moved the files to my nextcloud directory from the Fedora's package. After a few tweaks to /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf files, the login prompt appeared on my localhost/nextcloud. I was unable to configure my postgresql database from the web browser, so I used the command line tool [4] (occ) to finish the install. I did try the snap install of the nextcloud-server, but couldn't get it to work. However, the snap nextcloud-client works like a charm. Bonjour, I just added a crypted partition on my laptop (/home ans swap are crypted and until now no problem had occured with them) and this new partition is not mounted at boot, it is only to be mounted by user on demand. The whole install of this partition, went without any problems: it could be unlocked and mounted and unmounted and locked by the user without any problem, BUT while rebooting the laptop the boot process is blocked by "a start job is running for dev-mapper-chiffre.device (no limit)". What is this start job, I don't know! Why is it running, I don't know.... How to recover, I don't know... There always some problems with start/stop jobs which are running at boot or shutdown times. So what can I do to have a NORMAL boot? F28 suspend

I've got a laptop that has started misbehaving on suspend. About 1 in 10 suspends the laptop fails to fully suspend. It switches mostly off (screen off, etc.) but some of the motherboard keeps running. I know some of the motherboard keeps running because: - the wifi light remains on - the laptop will get hot because the fans don't start The laptop does not respond to the power button to wake up. It's necessary to force halt & reboot the laptop by holding the power button down for a few seconds. 9 out of 10 times suspend works fine. problem with cups-pdf and spool directory under wine

Hello, I've one application which does run under wine and would like to print its output to PDF. Attempt to filter output to PDF did not work I've found out about cups-pdf. After installing it, attempt to print was generating SELinux alerts which I solved (I belive) by following hints and issuing: $ sudo ausearch -c 'cups-pdf' --raw | audit2allow -M my-cupspdf $ sudo semodule -X 300 -i my-cupspdf.pp Now, there are no more alerts, but where is the output? Hi. Been reviewing/looking over various sysadmin related vids/sites for setting up a complete test website. I'm trying to find a "remote" sysadmin resource that I can talk to/work with for a small project to setup/run a test website that's publicly accessible. Looking to : -setup up basic/test site -correctly handle apache/httpd.conf file -correctly setup the access process/files for the web doc dir(s) -setup selinux/perms/access process -setup firewall -setup dns -setup test mysql as well as test firewall rules -handle firewall rules for ssh -setup ddos/cloudflare -setup required users/perms/acls -anything else??? Working with a skilled sysadmin this should be a quick process. Also working with a person online/together would allow me to quickly dodge any user screwups. Could not contact source "beid-release" , so it wil be disabled. What does ths mean , and how can I correct it ? Hi, After installing all available updates for my f28 desktop this evening, Xorg now fails to start. Typing 'startx' from the command-line from multiuser just results in the above error message and a return to the terminal prompt. How do I troubleshoot this? I have no idea what package that was updated caused this or even how to find out. It doesn't list any specific binary or details on why it failed (that I can tell). missing header files from /usr/include/rpc directory??

Upgraded a system from fedora 27 to fedora 28, and went to rebuild busybox, and it fails with 3 header files missing? With Fedora 27 the directory contains a number of header files, but with fedora 28 it only contains netdb.h?? Fedora 27 shows glibc-headers as being the patchage that provides them, and Fedora 28 has the package install, but a search on it results with no files that provides the missing files. Reinstalled the package, but still only the one netdb.h file? Tried copying the missing files from Fedora 27 to the directory, and it gets thru the compile process with them, but then gets errors during the link process, since the libraries must be missing something? +------------------------------------------------------------+ Michael D. lshw-gui -

I dnf installed lshw-gui and when I click on "Refresh" it dies with the following results: lshw works normally, just not the gui. Is it just my system? Fedora 27 XFCE updated as of this morning. KDE Applet Discover intrusion

The removable device icon on the kde taskbar gives three options when a usb device in inserted, a couple of photo viewer programs and one called file manager. The file manager option used to start dolphin. For a while now it has been Discover which does not give a list of files on the usb device but seems to look over the entire world for whatever strikes its fancy. The configure option on the device icon does not set the programs accessed for the devices. Robert

Error: Problem 1: package kernel-modules-extra-4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64 requires kernel-uname-r = 4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64, but none of the providers can be installed - conflicting requests Problem 2: package kernel-4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64 requires kernel-core-uname-r = 4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64, but none of the providers can be installed - conflicting requests I solved that by removing the two packages $ sudo dnf remove kernel-modules-extra-4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64 and $ sudo dnf remove kernel-4.16.11-200.fc27.x86_64 I notice that there are several 'fc27' packages in my upgraded system and I paste the list below. Is this a cause for concern? What is '@anaconda' (found in the third column in the listing below)? Thanks for the advice! Processes not closing on logout

Hello, I have a large number of processes that don't close on logout and it creates problems if I want to unmount the partition that is used by that user. Most look related to gnome which I am not running in KDE. I start with sddm as a login manager. I use multiple sessions and if I open a different user, I end up with these most of these processes for that user. Screen goes dark when booting latest kernel

Hi, I have a fedora27 system on an older x86_64 machine and when booting the latest kernel (I believe it was just released today) as well as the previous two, the display goes dark and becomes unresponsive. I've booted into the rescue kernel (an older 3.14 from fc21) to get it back online. $ uname -a Linux localhost 3.17.4-301.fc21.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 27 19:09:10 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux All other current kernels failed. How do I troubleshoot this? Based on the output from journalctl, it appears to be something related with gnome and/or packagekit and/or the display driver. Here's a few select error messages that look like they could be the cause. Display cmd within shell

Hi. Running a centos/fed box, and trying to craft a simple shell test to run a bunch of commands where the command is displayed as well as the output Ie. The following cmd might return 10 (the num of the files if the cmd is run from the cmdline. ls -al /cloud_nfs_parse/austincc*__parse.dat | wc -l 10 However I can't seem to figure out how to run the cmd from within a shell script where I can display the "cmd" as well as the result. #!/bin/sh ## #cp.sh # # run as a test from the nfs /cloud_nfs_parse to gen the num of parse.dat files # from the bn crawl # # #-- this doesn't quite work.. as it generates the complete "ls... output" but it does display the cmd and the resulting num of the ls files.. NFS second disk -

I assembled an NFS server about a month ago and it seems to work properly, has been in use continuouslysince then ... However I installed two 3TB discs and only enabled /dev/sda. I would like to simply copy data from time to time from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb. I cant work out how to accomplish this and am about at the point of just moving the second disk into a works station and doing an rsync occasionally for a back up. I would prefer to keep the /sda/sdb drive in the server. F27 to F28 - Postgresql upgrade fails

I just upgraded from Fedora 27 to 28. soft lockup after hibernation

Hi, Recently I installed Fedora 28 alongside Windows. There is something wrong with powering off after hibernation. When I have closed the lid of the laptop, and, some time later , wake up the system, it won't poweroff. Powering off hangs with the message "watchdog bug soft lockup - cpu#2 stuck for 22s, ..." When I poweroff the system without closing the lid some time (hibernation) the system is going down as it should. When I boot into an older kernel the same happens, so it is not a kernel issue. During starting up the system a short notice is displayed about "nouvau" and "fault". I cannot read the message properly because it is only visible for 1 second. I don't know if this has something to do with the problem. I would like to know if I can solve this problem.

I want to get history for all the pulseaudio components (to update my audacity bug report at rpmfusion). #rpm -q pulseaudio --last produces pulseaudio-11.1-18.fc28.1.x86_64 Thu 24 May 2018 09:59:34 PM EDT but # rpm -q pulseaudio* --last results in: package pulseaudio* is not installed so how can I see all components, particularly when I don't know what they are? thanks

Hi I am experiencing a lot of crashes just after logging in into GNOME. I am using Fedora 28 fully updated and upgraded from 27. I have already tried to remove all the extensions from .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions But it still happens. It does not happens always, but as soon as it happens I have to reboot. Any ideas?

Hello, when using mate desktop I remember I could define different settings fir my laptop display when on ac and when on battery. In particular for the display brightness. I see now in F28 with gnome desktop that after 15 seconds my laptop screen dims and I don't know how to disable this function, neither overall nor when on ac at least... It seems I picked this up when I built this F28 system in both /usr/lib64/firefox/browser/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}.xpi /usr/lib64/thunderbird/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}.xpi Seems to be an unpleasant Ads thing. weather satellite loop slow and jumpy: how to monitor gpu load?

background: Earlier today, I was trying to view a loop of weather satellite images. The animation speed was set to default, which is about midway between slowest and fastest. But the images were inappropriately slow to load, and the animation was inappropriately slow to advance from frame to frame. I experience this a lot. My desktop has an nVidia GeForce GTX 660/PCIe/SSE2, and I'm using the driver that's from rpmfusion, *not* from nVidia (I don't remember what it's called) proprietary one. questions: I've seen somewhere, I don't remember where, that there is a way of monitoring the gpu's busyness or load. I sure would like to be able to do this. I'd like something similar to the cpu plot and process table of "KSysGuard". What tool(s) come packaged with Fedora (27) to do this? If none, what is available in the usual Fedora repositories for this?

Changing the timezone in a GUI

I expect to be moving to a different time zone in a few months, and wanted to make sure that I can easily change the time zone on my desktop, running F 25 and Xfce. The Time and Date program on my Settings menu didn't run, but I was able to look in with a menu editor and see that the command line was: gnome-control-center datetime Running that from a terminal worked, once. Later that day, I tried again, and it had stopped understanding that argument. Since then, it's not been working. Checking, dnf doesn't recognize the program and rpm -q --whatprovides gnome-control-center returns no results. Presumably, the program's an orphan from an earlier release. I know that I can change the time zone from a CLI with timedatectl, but that's not the issue. Up until recently, I had a working GUI program to deal with this and not only did it stop working for no apparent reason, there doesn't seem to be a replacement. I'm sure that there are many people using Linux on laptops while traveling for business, and not all of them are willing to open a terminal just to change from Pacific to Mountain time, or back. I'm sure that there must be a way to do it, but I haven't found any. Suggestions?

hi how do you pass vars to rpmbuild for definition? eg rpmbuild --define \'"${_definition2}"\' I've been fiddling with ways to escape, but none is fricking working.. I mean, rpmbuild rushes to work(no errors nor failure) so if you try just command line do not believe it, because later as it executes %if you will see process does not see these definitions. many thanks, L.

If I do: dict -I or dict -D, I can see a lot of online dictionaries but none of may local dictionaries.... What's wrong? F28 - Today's updates messed up writing to USB

Yesterday, I had no problem writing to a USB device. Today, with the latest batch of updates (including selinux-policy-targeted), I could not write to a USB drive. I was under the gun to get something out, so I rebooted and USB writing worked. Just a bit of a glitch, but an inconvenience. It takes a bit of work to get everything set up again.

Folks, I run the bro network security monitor. Due to recent changes in openssl the bro monitor will no longer compile with openssl 1.1 only with openssl 1.0. As a result I had to uninstall openssl-devel and install the compat-openssl10-devel package. As part of the removal of openssl-devel the libesmtp-devel and net-snmp-devel packages were also removed. I have other software that uses libesmtp-devel. I can't install libesmtp-devel due to conflicts with openssl. Is there anyway to re-install the libesmtp-devel and net-snmp-devel packages? Any help is appreciated. Paolo

Running scriptlet: firefox-60.0.1-5.fc27.x86_64 187/187 ----- Lines 1 and 4 are for context only. Am I correct in assuming that line 3 goes with line 2 rather than line 4? What is causing the "Broken pipe" problem reported in line 3? What should I do to fix the problem (if it's for me to fix)? By the way, how do I determine which patch of the kernel is actually running on my workstation? Thank-you!

I assume you've verified that the SSD has a GPT partition table. Yes, I did. Honestly, the easiest way to find out is start over, go to custom partitioning, clock on the blue link to create partitions automatically, and see what it chooses for /boot/efi. I did this. I chose the SSD-disk, which contains also the Windows boot partition, to install Fedora 28. This is what happened. The installer (custom mode) creates LVM and a /boot partition. Not a /boot/efi partition. Did I boot into UEFI? And shall I still have the advantage of a fast boot?

udisks2 configuration

Bonjour, I want to be able to open a crypted device as a non-root user and I modified the file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.UDisks2.policy in order to do that. That works, but it is not a good thing to modify a file from the distrib to create a local configuration. There is an empty directory /etc/udisks2/modules.conf.d where I tried to guess what I could put inside for my purpose, but everything failed. I did not find a clear doc about the udisks2 configuration. Does anyone knows how to proceed? Troubles with rsync

I keep a repo of the packages for Fedora on a NAS system on a linksys router. The file system is ntfs. rsync has stopped being able to synchronize the package files from the updates in cache/dnf. Piping the updates through cpio works but complains about not being able to set the permissions on the transferred files to the same as the source. ntfs has permissions of 775 and those for the package files in updates are 644. Is there a way to get rsync ntfs aware? Robert

Question about Mate DT

Hi All, I am having problems with mate DT. If I leave the machine idle for a minute or two, (even with several windows of TB and FF open), I end up losing the DT altogether. All Desktop icons and panels disappear. Furthermore, even if I do not leave the machine idle (i.e. I am busy on the KB), then if I decide to suspend to disk, and later on, turn on the machine and resume, I have no DT, as if I had left the machine idle for a minute or two. Is this caused by a setting? Which one? Thanx!!!

Google Maps WebGL issue w/ Radeon card

Google Maps reliably crashes its tab in both Firefox and Google Chrome on my Radeon-based system (FirePro V4900). The only workaround seem to be to completely disable WebGL in one or both browsers. I don't see this on my Intel GPU-based laptop. mdadm raid1 lost (my fault)

Hi, I have two drives in a raid 1 configuration and used luks crypt on the raid once created. today i wanted to change the device number from 127 to 0 and can no longer open the array as luks says it is not a valid device. what i did was: $ mdadm --stop /dev/md127 $ mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=1 --assume-clean --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 the two drives can be seen, are part of an array and a hexdump says that they are still XFS but i can not get luks to open the array. did i loose the data on drives? i thought i did it this way before.. your help is greatly appreciated. cheers, page

OK, is anyone else seeing this and/or finding this annoying? Getting list emails where I don't really know who is sending. The "From" shows as None via users <users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org> So, it is showing up as "Fedora" in the From column of T-Bird. The actual header in the email are showing as From: None via users <users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org> Cc: olivares33561(a)protonmail.com So, it seem that olivares33561 is the real poster. -- Conjecture is just a conclusion based on incomplete information. KVM memory management

Dear All I have been trying to wrap my head around memory management for KVM on Fedora, at least compared to when I ran KVM from a CentOS host. Allocated memory on the KVM guest reports 100% uninitialised from the KVM host, I did not experience this behaviour on CentOS. If I allocate any amount of memory (2GB, 4GB, 8GB) to a KVM Guest including Windows with VirtIO drivers I see the host reporting 100% utilisation; however, on the KVM guest I can see that it is only using a fraction of total memory. While trying to resolve this issue I read that KSM suppose to resolve this issue; however, I do not see KSM installed, installed KSM but don't see any difference with KVM memory management. Can any someone shed some light on how best I can manage memory for KVM where the KVM host will report only the memory that is being consumed by the guest or as close as possible. The reason why this is becoming a challenge is when I am running appliances that required a minimum of 8 GB of RAM and a few of them are running, swapping starts and the entire box performance is degraded. Dear All Recently I been experiencing a rather strange behaviour with Ubuntu Guests from KVM, the pointer (cursor) gets grabbed but only works in a portion of the screen and when the pointer is released it becomes invisible on KVM from the host. I have been experiencing this for a while and was under the impression that it was only on my laptop, installed a clean F28 and I am experiencing the same behaviour. On any Ubuntu guest or variant, e.g. Kali Linux when I click in the KVM guest the pointer is grabbed; however, if I move the pointer it sort of releases it without me pressing "ctrl+alt," basically if I move the cursor and select another application and the cursor will remain at that position almost like the cursor from the host is not synchronised with the guest cursor. Another thing is after the cursor goes rogue, it be no longer visible by any other KVM guest, CentOS, FreeBSD, Windows etc. and the only way that I have been able to get the cursor back is the butcher KVM using kill -9 and reopen it. Do I need any sort of driver for Ubuntu guest of the KVM host (Fedora) to resolve this issue. -- Earl Ramirez <earlaramirez(a)gmail.com>

The IETF page: https://tools.ietf.org/tools/ says There's a tutorial available on how to install from PyPi, or if you're impatient you can try the following commands on the command line: pip install xml2rfc if that fails: easy_install pip pip install xml2rfc if that fails, go to the tutorial above. What is the recommended way to install this? I got to get working on a BUNCH of drafts this week.... thanks

I learned from you that /usr and /tmp should be on the SSD-drive in order to have maximal profit from this fast drive. Now I would like to have only "/home" on the HDD. This is the folder which is going to contain large files (video, musix, etc). I created a new partition on the HDD, mounted it (there is a line now in fstab). During the installation /home is now on the SSD. Can I make a symlink to an new /home at the HDD-drive? What would be the right command, if the mountpoint of de HDD-partion is /mnt/linux-data Would that be: "ln -s /home /mnt/linux-data/home"? (Seems far to simple). Or is the idea of symlinking not right.

GnuCash's new reconciliation behavior

I just experienced a slightly unexpected, new behavior of GnuCash's account reconciliation dialog. Doing a quick check of my package installation details, looks like I had GnuCash updated two weeks ago, and I guess this is the first time I reconciled an account since then. It seems that after clicking a transaction, to mark it as reconciled, what happens now is that not only does the little checkbox next to the transaction gets set, but the entire transaction gets shuffled to the bottom of the transaction list, so that all reconciled transactions always appear after the unreconciled ones. So: as I go through my account statement, and check off each transaction, each action appears to result in the transaction list getting reshuffled. Even though I might already be eyeballing the next transaction to check off, already, by the time I get to it, it's …somewhere else. Digging through GnuCashs's preferences, I don't find any option of reverting to the previous behavior, where I click each transaction to reconcile, and this simply sets the checkbox next to it, without the entire transaction list jumping around like something on a bad acid trip. So, it looks like GnuCash took years' worth of existing UI behavior, and just ripped it out and replaced with a UI that looks nearly identical but acts in a completely different, and unexpected way. Who do they think they are? Gnome?

Ooops we are talking about two different things. xdg-open http://fedoraproject.org opens the chrome browser and loads the fedora page, *but only does so from the command line*. What I am searching for, is a solution, which allows we to right-click on a url, and select 'Open Link in Browser' and have the same result. At present, NOTHING happens when I do the right-click thing. It does not matter if chrome is open or not: nothing happens. It is neat that xdg-open does what it does, but, as noted, command line only, which kinda defeats the urge to "just click that random link - you know you want to". R. Geoffrey Newbury

Dear Fellow Fedora Users, In light of many changes is there a web browser Fedora supported that honors the java plugins. The new firefox does not support java like it used to . Firefox-esr will soon deprecate the java support and we will not have access to the plugin. I have icedtea-web plugin plus openjdk installed. I search for several web browsers like palemoon but they are not in the official repo. I installed midori in the meantime. Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated. F28 audacity-free crashing with passthrough monitoring enabled

Anyone here using Audacity? I am recording some records through an amp to usb converter (ADS Tech Instant Music). Been having problems with one Bach Concerti album getting stuck. So after a couple tries, I tried enabling passthrough mode in recording so I could listen to the record and nudge the arm past the stuck part. Everytime I started a record session Audacity just crashed with no warning. Finally, I turned passthrough off and have increased the head tracking weight (hey I bought this turntable back ~'73; I have touched the settings for DECADES!). So far it looks like I added enough weight and after the side is recorded I will see if it is OK at the higher weight. Meanwhile, I would think the passthrough problem is a bug. I never tried it in prior versions so I do not know if it is recent (guess I could go back to that F21 system with the bad fan and see what happens). So I am checking here first for other Audacity users before filing a bug on it. thanks

/run/screen in systemd

I am running fresh install of fedora 28 and I am trying to set up a minecraft server for my kids following the systemd service file outlined here https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Server_startup_script then command being called is "ExecStart=/bin/sh -c '/usr/bin/screen -DmS mc-server /usr/bin/java ..". I have written service files in the past so I have a basic understanding of systemd, However I have never tried to use screen in systemd. When I try to start the service I get an error "Directory '/run/screen' must have mode 777." to see if it worked I ran chmod and the service starts fine but then when I run "screen -ls" I get "Directory '/run/screen' must have mode 775." which is what /run/screen was set to originally. What is causing the need for 777 from systemd? and how would I fix it? I really don't like the idea of having anything set to 777 and I have tried to find a solution online. There are many references to strace causing issues but that is not installed. And other articles said to check permissions of /usr/bin/screen so here is what I have -rwxr-sr-x. 1 root screen 501248 Feb 9 14:10 /usr/bin/screen drwxrwxrwx. 3 root screen 60 Jun 3 14:31 /run/screen .

Lenovo 120e speakers stop

At least with F28/Xfce, so far, I am getting SOMETHING from the builtin speakers. F24/Xfce got nothing... I am listening to a session in Audacity. Stopping and starting to get the track points so I can split it up into separate tracks. Internal speakers stop playing. I have to plug in a little speaker until into the headphone jack. I unplug the speakers and start playing Audacity again, and internal speakers work again. For a while. Then stop again. Rinse and repeat. Nothing reported in /var/log/messages about this. Any advise on troubleshooting this?

Hi, I purchased an Asus laptop with 2 hard drives (SSD 256 GB and HDD 1 TB). Windows10 was preinstalled on the SSD and the HDD drive is used for data. I wanted to install fedora alongside Windows. So I shrinked the partition on the SSD drive (sdb) and also the partition on the HDD drive (sda). I installed fedora on the new partition of the SDD drive. So far so good. I can boot into Windows as well as Fedora. Now I want to have /home, /usr/ and/ /tmp on the HDD drive, which I intend to use as data-drive. I created a mountpoint for the new partition of the HDD drive (sudo mkdir /mnt/sda2 and sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2). Now I am stuck. This is beyond my (limited) skills. How do I realize that /home, /usr and and /tmp wil be stored on the HDD? I need a step-by-step tutorial to proceed. Thanks in advance. Peter

Where is tracer

So I decided to look into tracer. When I did my system build I did a 'dnf list > dnf.lst' to get a listing of all rpms in the repos (at least at that point it time). I have found this an easy way to go look for things of interest. 4% battery; dpesn't suspend

F27. I ran a new laptop battery down to 4% (as claimed by gnome) and my laptop didn't auto-suspend, nor hibernate. In settings / power, the only option for battery power these days seems to be to automatically suspend after a set time period; not at a certain battery level. HP Omen with F28 chromium fails to run under optirun

I have a HP Omen laptop with Optimus (Intel + Nvidia). Bumblebee is installed and optirun works for glxgears and glxspheres64, however I can not get it to work for Chrome or Chromium. Any ideas? I am running the Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion (the others did not work). Note I had to fix the faker libs in /usr/lib64: cd /usr/lib64 ln -s VirtualGL/* . optirun glxgears works great and uses Nvidia. These are my notes: -T Fedora 28+ core dumps: As of Fedora 28, core dumps have to be extracted by the administrator (root): These commands will give you a list of core dumps # coredumpctl --reverse list # ls -l /var/lib/systemd/coredump/ You need the PID of the core dumps parent to create a coe dump: coredumpctl has a PID column. "--reverse" puts the youngest at the top: # coredumpctl --reverse list TIME PID UID GID SIG COREFILE EXE Wed 2018-02-21 12:00:46 PST 20759 0 0 6 missing /opt/Cimcor/CimTrak/CimT # ls -l /var/lib/systemd/coredump/ -rw-r-----. 1 root root 1622777 May 31 03:04 core.CimTrakServer\x2eb.0.a91f9e4dc86f4e7ea65bd7dbd7eb5429.28086.1527761078000000.lz4 The second to last set of numbers (28086 above) is the PID To find a particular program's youngest pid (sub program name for "CimTrak"): # coredumpctl --reverse list | perl6 -e 'my $x=slurp(); for split "\n", $x -> $Line {if $Line ~~ / CimTrak / { say $Line.words[4]; last } };' 9405 To extract a core dump: # coredumpctl dump {PID} --output /tmp/{PID}.core This will place the Core file will be located in /tmp/ For example: # coredumpctl dump 9405 --output /tmp/9405.core

Strange issue with dhcpd and laster kernel upgrade?

Have just had an issue with the dhcp ip addresses no longer working with the latest kernels on my Fedora 27 machines. Have 4 machines at my house, 2 have fixed IP addresses, so had no problems, but the other 2 machines stopped getting IPs. Didn't think anything of it, and just assigned them fixed IP addresses. Have an old notebook that I had just been using, and did the updates. Then rebooted, and it also would no longer get a connection with the 4.16.12 kernel. Rebooted to the 4.16.11, and it connected with no problem?? Rebooted again with the 4.16.12, and it just shows connecting, but no connection. Changed the setup to hard code an IP address on the wifi routers range, and then it connects to the wifi just fine. So Wifi and dhcp connection works fine with 4.16.11, but fails with 4.16.12?? Works with the IP address hard coded, so is this a kernel issue or what? Thanks. +------------------------------------------------------------+ Michael D. tetex-xdvi required by texmaker broken dependency

I wanted to test emacs-26.1 from rawhide, so installed the rpms on f28. Decided it broke too many things, so reverted with dnf distro-sync. Now I'm back to emacs-25.3, but the icon used by emacs is the wrong one (it's a terminal (probably from emacs-terminal), not a gnu). How do I fix this?

F28 Backlight does not turn off

This is Fedora 28 with Xfce. I have set power manager to blank and lock the screen after 15 min. This is a change from the default 10min. Now the screen is black, but staying on. It is no longer turning off. What do I need to set so that the screen turns off? thanks
