offtopic questions??
by bruce
Hi list.
I'm working on a project, and although it has nothing to do with
fedora.. I'd lik eot know if it might be ok to post questions here.
With no one around me physically/in my current area, and I can't find
any targeted site/message group, thought I'd ask here...
My project involves crawling -- fetching of data for a targeted site
-- textbook data.
I'm really looking to be able to state what I'm doing, why the process
is this way, etc,, and get some feedback/ideas...
If it's stepping on toes to post here.. I won't go against the grain.
thanks

gnome-software disable third party repos
by Louis Garcia
When gnome-software runs for the first time it asks you if you would like
to enable third party repos. how can I disable having users enable third
party stuff? I found org.gnome.software enable-repos-diaog=true but turning
that off still has the dialog but asks for passwd.

openssl 1.1.0i
by Chris Kottaridis
I am getting some pressure from work to upgrade openssl 1.1.0h to
1.1.0.i on my F27 host.
I just updated all packages on my F27 but openssl is still at 1.1.0h in
the Fedora repositories,
Is there any plan to update openssl on F27 or F28 to 1.1.0i ?
It apparently has to do with CVE-2018-0732 which is a low priority, but
local compliance policies want it addressed.
Thanks

Problems with Xfce over vnc
by Robert Moskowitz
I have Xfce over vnc mostly working. Thanks to posts here.
I have a couple of open items.
My environment is Fedora29-beta 1.2 for armv7 with Xfce. I have altered
the xstartup to end with:
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
exec /bin/sh /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
startxfce4 &
Note that currently, the is no .Xresources file.
In the log file, there are a bunch of sizing errors. I suspect I need a
GEOMETRY statement?
When I connect to the user over vnc, I get my Xfce session with the XFCE
- PolicyKit Agent error. This happens everytime I restart the vncserver
service (or reboot the system).
This is NOT an SELinux issue. Tested with permissive mode.
It MAY be that I do not have the right invocation magic for Xfce over
vnc. I have not been able to find any good information on this other
that what others have posted here on the list.
So either this is an Xfce invocation error or somewhere else in the system.
I have posted this problem to:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=484945
Not supprisingly no responses yet. I have also posted the the tigervnc
google groups and waiting for a response there.
thanks for any help!

Forcing updates install on shutdown
by Louis Garcia
Is there a way to have fedora workstation to update on shutdown? When a
user logs off or shutdown there box I would like fedora to pkcon update -y
or dnf upgrade -y. I thought about creating a systemd unit file to do this
but would that conflict with offline update?

Thank you
by L. D. Barnes
I started with Linux when Mandrake had to be bought from a computer store,
and 56K external modems where used Netscape Navigator. From Mandrake I went
to Suse, that for reasons I don't remember wouldn't work on a new desktop,
I went to Ubuntu, and toyed around with Vector, and when support died back
to Ubuntu. I have tried a plethora of desktop environments.
I now have Fedora security lab installed, you have really done well, I love
the idea of not having sudo access while I am the user, but to have to
login in as SU to use some of the apps, is just wonderful. I always loved
snaptic and I really, really appreciate dnfdragora. This has got to be the
best thought out environments I have ever used, thank you so much.
I came to Fedora for several reasons I had in mind that in my retirement
years I wanted to work on cyber security projects, because now living in a
senior housing community I found out how inept my peers are when it comes
to basic security. I have found I am inept on how to use the security lab,
I've done internet searches to try and get some information, but seem to
come up short, I went to my local university and they want me to get a
degree, at 56 years old really not interested, I already have a a BA and
MTh I've tried the different online courses through eDX and Udemy, they all
teach using different OS or different types of software.
I am really wondering is there any training for the security lab suite? If
not that's ok I will just continue to use this configuration I think its
sweet.
Appreciate it.

Changing the LABEL of an iso9660 file system
by Kevin Wilson
Hello,
I have a USB stick on which I had in the past an Ubunutu installatilon.
When I run "e2label /dev/sdb" I get:
e2label /dev/sdb
e2label: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb contains a iso9660 file system labelled 'Ubuntu-Server 17.04 amd64'
Now, I did not need this installation anymore, so I created a single
Linux partition on the USB stick (/dev/sdb1)
with fdisk, and labeled it as sandiskUSB.
When I run:
e2label /dev/sdb1
I get
sandiskUSB
Is there a way to change also the lablel of /dev/sdb to be sandiskUSB ?
Tying
e2label /dev/sdb sandiskUSB
does not work, it gives:
e2label: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb contains a iso9660 file system labelled 'Ubuntu-Server 17.04 amd64'

Kevin

[f28] Unable to print from Fedora 28
by Marco Guazzone
Hello,
Today I am having trouble in printing from Fedora. I have tried two
different network printers without success.
Specifically, if I print a test page (in XFCE, open the "Print Settings"
application and click on the "Print Test Page"), cups says that the page
has been printed successfully:
Sep 17 10:27:33 wildcat cupsd[799]: UPO-KyoceraKM3035-LotB sguazt 172
[17/Sep/2018:10:27:33 +0200] 1 1 - localhost Test Page - -
Sep 17 10:27:34 wildcat cupsd[799]: REQUEST localhost - - "POST / HTTP/1.1"
200 364 Create-Printer-Subscriptions successful-ok
But the printer does not receive any data.
My system is an up-to-date Fedora 28 x86_64 (kernel:
4.18.7-200.fc28.x86_64).
Last time I have successfully printed to these printers from Fedora was Sep
12, 2018.
The printers work without problems under Windows 7.
Any idea?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Marco
