Plasma Desktop Fails To Load Properly
by David Dembrow
I use fedora with the kds plasma desktop and have been for a very long
time. Powering up today and logging in appeared to hangup while
bringing up the desktop and I noticed the plasmashell process was
consuming 100% of the cpu. I tried restarting a few times and then gave
up an left the machine running while I did an errand. When I returned,
it looked like the plasma desktop loaded because I noticed the screen
lock had kicked in and when I unlocked the screen there was a
background. Then I noticed the dual screen was a duplicate (not
extended with separate backgrounds) and the kpanel was missing. So I do
not have the network manager connecting to the router as well as no
application launcher.
Is this my own problem or has something happened to the plasma desktop
launcher? Is there a way I can reset the plasma desktop or start it
manually (i.e. from a run level 3)?
Thanks for any suggestions,

What does mktime return????
by Jouk Jansen
Hi All,
I'm strugling with the C-function mktime. According to the man-pages it
returns "seconds since the Epoch". I tried to use this functions to get
differnces from two date-times , but was could not interpret the result.
When trying to get the diffrence between 30 Nov 2019 23:59:59 and 1 Dec 2019
00:00:00 (see code below) I expected to find 1 second difference but I find:
1577746799 1577833200 -86401
As output of the sample program. (and not 1577833199 1577833200 -1)
How should I read "seconds since the Epoch"????
Is the output of mktime correct?
(I also tried 31 Nov and got the expected 1 second)
(should mktime not give an error for 31 Nov??)
Regards
Jouk
Code :
#include <stdio.h>
#include <time.h>
main()
{
struct tm time_str , time_str2;
time_str.tm_sec = 59; //30 Nov 2019 23:59:59
time_str.tm_min = 59;
time_str.tm_hour = 23;
time_str.tm_mday = 30;
time_str.tm_mon = 11;
time_str.tm_year = 119;
time_str.tm_isdst = 0;
time_str2.tm_sec = 0; // 1 Dec 2019 00:00:00
time_str2.tm_min = 0;
time_str2.tm_hour = 0;
time_str2.tm_mday = 1;
time_str2.tm_mon = 12;
time_str2.tm_year = 119;
time_str2.tm_isdst = 0;
printf( "%d %d %d\n" , mktime( &time_str ) , mktime( &time_str2 ) ,
mktime( &time_str ) - mktime( &time_str2 ) );
}

CMake Build Problem

I'm getting a repeatable error when building the master branch of LyX

virt-fs coming soon?
by Tom Horsley
I was reading all the reasons virt-fs is the superior way
for virtual guests to share filesystems with the host. Then
after all the hype I discovered it apparently wasn't in any
released kernels or tools yet :-).
Is it likely to appear in the fedora 32 or 33 time frame?
Will there be GUI support for sharing with virt-fs
in the virt-manager tool?
Just curious. I'd like to experiment with it when I don't
have to apply kernel patches and fiddle qemu command lines
to do so :-).

FC31: how to make localhost preferred nameserver
by Sean Darcy
FC31 on a laptop. I'd like the have localhost as the first nameserver.
Then the the nameservers supplied by dhcp.
That is:
resolv.conf
127.0.0.1
[whatever dhcp provides]
So I can't set DNS=none. There used to be "head" for for
resolv.conf.d, but that doesn't exist for FC31.
