From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

I have been using ethernet up to now. I went to enable the wifi, to see no wifi listed. It has been too long since I have had to do this troubleshooting. Can some point me to what I need to look at to find what the Fedora thinks is the wifi? thanks

Updated info about disabling tracker related processes?

Hello, I have recently begun to use again gnome session and I have reinstalled nautilus. I see that nautilus depends on tracker and so the reinstall put in tracker and its things And this morning in my F28 system with SSD disk (I don't imagine on a normal sata based environment) I had to kill tracker-extract and tacker-miner processes because they hogged my cpu for several minutes.. Searching with google I found different info about disabling (or at least calm down) tracker, but they all seem not updated, in the sense that several commands/services are not present in my f28 environment. Any pointer about configuring and/or disabling it? Thanks in advance, Gianluca

Start aMule via command line (amule-2.3.2-17.fc30.x86_64.rpm) aMule seem to work, but. Goto on Network (List Server) panel. VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? General protection fault involving flash

The Citi.com credit card website allows generating virtual card numbers, but unfortunately they're using flash in that part of the site. When I try to use it in F30, on one particular machine (it's hardware-specific), in GNOME (it doesn't happen in MATE), the Firefox tab crashes and I get a general protection fault, for example [88812.835817] traps: Web Content[2532] general protection fault ip:7f94ee0d0adb sp:7ffedd6a3140 error:0 in libX11.so.6.3.0[7f94ee0aa000+8e000] Since flash is involved, it's not clear whether this is the fault of Fedora or flash. This has been happening for around half a year, so flash has been updated several times. It also happened with F29. Anyone know how to narrow down where the issue is?

How do I generate grub for legacy?

Hi All, I have a Fedora 30 flash drive set up for dual booting from Legacy or UEFI. It boots beautifully from UEFI. (It also have a bios_grub partition). It booted perfectly from both under Fedora 29. Now when booting from legacy, it go into "System Setup". If you press system Setup, I get a "/grub/core-system" type error Remaking grub.cfg, I get # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg Generating grub configuration file ... Adding boot menu entry for EFI firmware configuration done Uhhhhh.. I wanted legacy, not EFI. What am I missing? copy and paste from mouse when window full of icons?

Hello, while using "Files", the explorer application (version 3.28.1-stable) in my Fedora 28 system, I have sometimes this kind of problem: - I normally use what should be "list view" with list of file names - if I have to paste a file/dir or group of copied files/dirs into a location where the page listed is full (no blank space inside it), it seems that I cannot paste: the right mouse click doesn't offer the paste option. In these cases I temporarily switch to what should be "icon view" and in this case I always have some blank space because of how items are displayed. I select a blank space and then right-mouse --> paste Then I come back to list view... Is this a sort of bug or what? How to find out which wifi card

I am working on my non-working wifi now. The last critical item (I hope). Just installing the broadcom-wl rpm got the card recognized, and I am seeing SSIDs, but cannot connect. Perhaps some setting needed. So I figure to start I need to know what card F30 thinks I have. Win10's driver for this unit is BCMWL63a. I can't find my old notes on how to list information about the card itself. thanks

KWorld ATSC 110 Tuner (PCIe) with Fedora 30 failing

By chance does anyone else use a KWorld ATSC 110 pcie tv tuner card with Fedora 30? My card worked with 29 at some point in the near past, but now no longer works with 30. Using kaffeine as the player/recorder, I get one in twenty correct startups, the rest blank screen. Same with cli dvb software. Can anyone else confirm? Thank You.

gnome frozen

Hello, Since I upgraded to fc30, if I do not use the PC for a while the screen turns to lock (no screensaver is used). Is this time is long, I may not be able to log in. The screen remains frozen after I provide the password. The only way to get access to a graphics mode is to run kill -9 -1 I though that it may be due to a mounted filesystem. But it is not the case. It may be due to Nextcloud, but I do not know how to unmount by a command like. However, I cannot really make a correlation. How can I debug? Manually installed grub (no bls) doesn't update entries automatically on kernel install or removal.

I have a legacy BIOS. I didn't install grub through anaconda, instead I installed it manually (as per https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?313824 ) to a partition so as to be able to use the Windows boot loader. All went well. I noticed grub was installed the traditional way (not the new bls) so I can just edit /etc/default/grub and run grub2-mkconfig for any modification I want. The only issue, so to speak (because I don't know if it's a bug or a setting), is that on new kernel installations or kernel removals, I must manually run grub2-mkconfig to re-generate grub.cfg The Fedora documentation (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2#Updating_GRUB_2_configuration_on_BIOS…) which describes the old behaviour, states that 'Grubby in Fedora patches the configuration when a kernel update is performed'. So maybe, with the new bls thing, the kernel scriptlets aren't using this any more. Anybody knows anything about it? Can I set something so 'grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' is called again automatically on kernel install or removal?

Migrating RAID1 to new system

Hi, I have an older fedora install that I need to upgrade. It has 8 Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB disks in there now, mounted on root using an LSI SAS 9260-8i controller. There is about 1.3TB usable space. I need to upgrade it to add more space. If I bought eight 512GB SSDs, how do I calculate how much usable space I would have after partitioning/formatting using XFS? Can I safely use XFS on the root partition? My strategy to upgrade the system using the eight new 512GB SSDs would be: - Add two regular 2TB disks as RAID1 to the existing system - Copy the 1.3TB of user data onto it - Remove the eight existing 240GB SSDs - Install the eight new 512GB SSDs - Install fedora30 onto the new system - Migrate the old configs from backup onto the new system - Mount the two RAID1 drives onto the new system - Copy data from RAID1 array to new system Do I need to migrate the RAID1 config, or will mdadm figure it out on its own? Anything else I should watch for?

[OT] best (Linux based!) all-in-one NAS-VPN-firewall?

Greetings, One of my jobs in the next months will be Free Software teaching/ consulting for a small private school. Part of the consulting consists of helping the school to evaluate how to set up some infrastructure, using Linux/Free Software as much as possible. I have been just asked to, quoting, "suggest an all-in-one NAS-VPN-firewall for the school". We are talking ~80 students in the 8/13 years age range, maybe more after summer, plus teachers and administration. The "all-in-one" part is the key requirement, and also the reason why I am asking for recommendations based on your real-world experience. I know how to handle this stuff the 100% DIY/hacker way, but that is not an option in this case. Me, I wouldn't mind but, while the school would like to use more FOSS also for administration and internal services, actual teaching has much higher priority this year. Disable Caps Lock -

J am a poor typist and usually disable Caps Lock in a script with: /usr/bin/xmodmap -e 'keycode 66=Shift_L' That no longer works as it should in Fedora-30 for whatever reason, now it just locks Caps Lock on and all I can get is caps unless I hold a Shift key which is inconvenient to say the least ... Weird kex_exchange_identification log messages [SOLVED]

I keep getting these errors showing up in the log from sshd: error: kex_exchange_identification: banner line contains invalid characters I finally tracked them down and understand the nonsense that is happening: For historical reasons (having to do with butthead IT people at work deciding outgoing sshd should be blocked by firewall), I listen on the https port (443) as well as the normal 22 on my sshd at home. Apparently "helpful" web browsers on my android devices and wot-not decide they ought to probe connections to see if https is possible before falling back to http, so they all probe my ssh daemon :-). The error has been happening forever, but the latest sshd now logs it (it previously just ignored it).

F30 - Grub error message

Right at boot a message flashes on the screen. Something about an error. All I can see for the brief time it is on the screen are the words in a path of grub and I think loader I do not see any messages in /var/log/messages that include 'grub' that look anything like an error. This comes before the IRQ messages which stay on the screen for long enough to easily read them. Is there some way to catch this message so I can figure out what is the problem? thanks

GDM Login Screen Doesn't Show Primary User After F30 Upgrade

I have experienced similar issues with two different F29->F30 upgrades via dnf. Although what happened wasn't identical on both upgrades, the results were the same: After upgrade/reboot, the GDM login screen does not show the primary (previously existing) user name (UID 1000). In the first upgrade, I was forced to create a new user after the upgrade on first boot, as if this was a new install, despite the existing userid. The previously existing user name does not show up on the GDM login screen. Instead, only the *newly* created username (UID 1001) shows. In the second upgrade, the firstboot-create-a-new-user didn't occur, but the previously existing primary user name (also UID 1000) does not show on the GDM login screen. Instead, only secondary username (UID 1001) shows. In both cases, the primary userid can be accessed by clicking the "not show" link on the GDM login screen and manually entering userid and password. Of course, this is a fairly simple workaround, but is nevertheless an inconvenience. Where does the GDM login screen pull the info for the primary userid? /etc/passwd and /etc/group don't show anything that looks like a flag for this. The files in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/ appear to contain some sort of flag, but they are apparently created on login, rather than being permanent. On both systems the primary userid (UID 1000) is shown as: SystemAccount=true While the file for UID 1002 is: SystemAccount=false Modification time on these files is same as the userid's last login, and manually changing the SystemAccount flag has no effect; it's set back on next login. -- Tim Evans |5 Chestnut Court 443-394-3864 |Owings Mills, MD 21117

HP printer device manager not seeing HP printer

The hits on F30 keep coming. I can't remember an install where I had so many things not work right. Anyway. I went through the standard Xfce printer setup and connected to my HP 8600 over port 9100. I have printed a number of items to this printer. But I want to use the scanner, like I have set up on my old F28 system, so I have installed hplip-gui, xsane, and such and started hplip-gui. It is telling me I have no HP printers installed. I went through localhost:631 and installed the printer again. It now shows there as well. HPlip-gui still not seeing the printer. What might I be missing here? thanks

Switch to BLS failed

Hi, I have a machine with F29 and a partition with an old WinXP (not EFI). Before updating to F30 I wanted to try the new BLS so I used "grub2-switch-to-blscfg" to test the transition, but something went wrong. Before I did a full update and reboot to be sure, but after I gave the command and rebooted the start menu showed only "Win Xp" no linux start. Looking around I found a few things to test but nothing worked. in "grub>" the command blscfg gave "can't find command 'blscfg'" but /boot/loader/entries/ was populated with 4 .conf entries. Only way to start Linux was the command "configfile /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.bak" and I was able to go back to "standard" (edit "/etc/default/grub" set "GRUB_ENABLE_BLSCFG=false" and rerun "grub2-install /dev/sda" and "grub2-mkconfig -o grub.cfg"). Has anyone tried this? Did I miss a step or something? Now that I know how to get back, and I saved a "good" grub.cfg, I can try again. Thanks, G

F30 LVM partition on a notebook

I decided to use the default partitioining options on the install and I see that swap and the ext4 /home are in a LVM partition. What does LVM buy me on a notebook? It is not like I am going to add another drive and extend /home onto it. In fact if I have to pull the drivew to rescue data from /home, I then have to contend dealing with LVM and what if it is the same label as the lvm on the system I try to mount it on. Seems to me, in my limited knowledge, that I should continue as I have for some time and just create the swap and home partitions directly.

F30 QEMU migration of a F21 image failed to start

First I installed QEMU on F30: dnf groupinstall "virtualization" dnf install qemu virt-manager libvirt systemctl enable libvirtd systemctl start libvirtd systemctl enable libvirt-guests systemctl start libvirt-guests I backed up my fedora21.qcow2 from my old F28 system and then copied it to the new F30 system. The target directory on each system is: /var/lib/libvirt/images I started QEMU, then went through the steps of migrating an image. This worked with this F21 image from F21 to F24 and again to F28. This image has some restricted content data that I work with in this manner. This time, with F30, the migration failed and kept looping based on what I saw in the QEMU session via a <Alt-D>. Anyone working with QEMU with EOL Fedora images?

router usb port problem

I have a linksys e3200 router and 3 pc's connected: fed30 desktop, fed30 laptop & Imac with latest macos Mojave. All connections are ethernet (I don't like wireless). I also have an Epson inkjet connected by usb cable to Imac. I can print from Imac: usb + wireless(if I configure wireless) I can print from desktop: usb (but too much bother switching cable from Imac to desktop) I can print from laptop: usb + wireless(if I configure wireless) The desktop does not have wireless card so can't use that. (Wireless printing is directly from pc to printer, not via router) Now the linksys e3200 has a usb port that should be able to handle compatible disks and printers. If I could could configure this for the printer I would be able to print from all 3 pc's without problems as the printer is in the local network. The problem is I can't get this to work. First I don't even know if the port is active (i.e. if it works). I don't have a compatible disk to try if it works with storage. (It certainly doesn't work with usb sticks). If I "configure" printing (ipp) with cups after installing Epson driver I cannot print ("no connection" to printer). It (an IP address) does not show up in anything I try (nmap only shows the router and the pc IP's for example). A check should be able using the 'Cisco connect' software on the Imac. But the latest version is not accepted by Mojave even though it should be compatible, so I cannot install it. Is there any way of finding out if the usb port is working? If not I will have to buy a wireless dongle for the desktop and use wireless (even though I would prefer not to). AV

Hello, I have a fedora which was running fine fine on /dev/sdb (/boot/efi on /dev/sdb1) Then I install a new fedora 30 on /dev/sda6 (also with /boot/efi on /dev/sdb1) When I rebooted, the "old" machine did not show up (at grub), then I run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg Now "old" machine is recognized at grub, but I get an error at the boot time I cannot even run a command line (like system*) Actually, I get Failed to mount /boot/efi Should I run: grub2-install /dev/sda or grub2-install /dev/sdb Also, when booting (before grub), I have options /EFI/BOOT/BOOTx64.EFI (this on let be boot on the new install) /EFI/fedora/grub.cfg /EFI/fedora/shimx64.efi Which one should I use preferentially? Three computers fnuc.local = Fedora 30 Server flap.local = Fedora 30 Workstation fmac.local = Fedora Rawhide Workstation When doing 'ssh chris@' from -> to, the following combos work: flap -> fnuc flap -> fmac fmac -> fnuc fmac -> flap But fnuc, the Fedora Server, will not resolve fmac or flap. ssh: Could not resolve hostname flap.local: Name or service not known ssh: Could not resolve hostname fmac.local: Name or service not known I can of course use IP addresses and it works fine. But that's driving me nuts. Originally the Workstations could not see the Server until I added mdns service to firewalld's default zone 'FedoraServer'. If I use nmap from fnuc (server), it's clearly sees these laptops. Fedora and Thunderbird -

I have used Thunderbird with an add-on that enabled the use of recorded voice announcements identifying incoming messages so that I did not have to come back upstairs to the computer to determine what it was. The upgrade to Fedora-30 requires the use of a Thunderbird version that no longer supports the add-on [Tonequilla]. Until now I dnf downgraded Thunderbird and then the add-on could be installed, now downgrade gets Thunderbird 60.6.1 (64-bit) for which the add-on is disabled and not available. What is akonadi? What is baloo? Why does akonadi usually crash on system startup? Why does akonadi or maybe baloo sometimes use 100% of cpu? Why does akonadi or baloo cause a great deal of disk activity? Is there any way to run KDE alarm without akonadi? Thanks - jon

F30 install problem on Lenovo x131e

I have a refurbished x131e. I pulled the 320G HD and installed an empty 500GB SSD. From a USB SD I started the x64 NetInstall. In the install process, I set my location (Detroit), changed the host name, left the drive setup as default. Then I selected a bunch of software. I selected the Xfce desktop and a number of items on the right. About 1500 files and something like 1.23GB download. I proceeded with the install and set the root password and created my user ID. The download completed as did the rpms installs. The kernel build I think completed. My attention was elsewhere when the system just turned off. Bip. Off. I pulled the USB CD and powered up. It shut right off. I powered up again and the kernel selection menu shows for a bit and seems to select the first one. Then it shuts off. I have gone through this 2 'step' power up attempt twice. Now what? Anyone aware of anything like this? Should I try the install again, but just pretty much basic Xfce? Should I download a LiveCD (is there an Xfce one?) and see what I see on about the system and status of the drive? thanks

Is using "updates-testing-" repository for at single package possible?

Hi everyone, I installed a package from "updates-testing" repository, but I noticed that it doesn't get updated from "updates-testing" repository, moving forward, when the system is configured to only use stable repository in general. Even if I used the parameter/option "enablerepo" it is only for the command and not for the lifetime of the package install. That kinda breaks it for me. I am curious if it is possible to have 1 package that is using the "updates-testing" repository and the rest using the stable one? Thanks for any feedback. Sincerely Max

24 hour Thunderbird -

Fedora-30 insists that I use Thunderbird 60.6.1 (64-bit), refuses to dnf downgrade it, so once again I am trying to get it to do some of the things I find most convenient, in this case use 24 hour time instead of AM/PM. Adding "export LC_TIME=C" to .bashrc m\does not change it. I think there was an °add-On that did it for me in the past but that's one of many that shows not compatible in my Thunderbird. firewall logging rule stopped logging to syslog

I have a firewall forwarding rule with a logging option: <rule family="ipv4"> <forward-port ... /> <log level="info"> <limit value="1/h"/> </log> </rule> Checking my logs, they seem to have stopped after 2019-06-02. Checking rpm logs, the last firewalld update was in May, so that can't be it. There have been fairly frequent kernel updates, not sure but maybe that's when the kernel 5.1 series came out? I'm not very knowledgeable in iptables-verse, but I do see a reasonable iptable rule, "iptables -t mangle -n -L" shows: Chain PRE_FedoraServer_log (1 references) target prot opt source destination LOG tcp – 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:#### limit: avg 1/hour burst 5 LOG flags 0 level 6 But these log entries stopped dropping into /var/log/messages some time between 2019-06-02 and now. Anyone know if this is a known issue? Not sure who to file the bug against.

Hello, In FC30 (maybe it was the same in fc38), when we have a gnome-terminal opened, we can easy open a new one just by clicking on +. However, if the first terminal has been open owner preferences like usr/bin/gnome-terminal --zoom=0.9 $* when the 2nd terminal is opened, theses preferences are lost. Indeed, it would be preferable that the same call is done. Even worst, using the gnome-terminal preferences (i.e. by creating his own Profile), we do not have the option to set the zoom option (the minimum with is 1). Having different zooming values induces a bizarre behavior like a rescaling of the windows every time that we switch from one terminal to another one. Am I missing something? I upgraded to Fedora 30, in a virtual machine, and it is very slow at responding to typing in a terminal window. When I execute the top, the first process is PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 11325 root 20 0 135m 27m 1960 S 16.1 0.0 1192:48 jobmemd-daemon I do not see anything when I search for jobmemd-daemon. What is it ? Perhaps it is causing the response problems and there is OK to stop it ? If so, how ?

UID and GID on F30

Hi, I recently set up Fedora 30 as a new install on a blank SDD. When I went to create my user it got UID 1000, as I expected (since I was the first user). But, not as I expected, it got GID 1001, because something else had already grabbed it: $ cat /etc/group|grep 1000 hugetlbfs:x:1000:openvswitch I don't know what hugetlbfs is, nor openvswitch, my brief search against those terms doesn't suggest they're something I've set out to use. Nor do I consider them to be users of any kind. So why are they/it using GUI 1000? I always though ID numbers above 1000 were for people. Not being GID 1000 is a bit of a pain, NFS-wise, since 1000 belongs to me on other devices, and 1001 belongs to others. My quick workaround was to remove my private 1001 group from my user account, and pick the generic 100 users group. Though this doesn't stop the issue that whatever hugetlbfs/openvswitch is, has access to my GID on other devices. Can I remove them? Can I change their GID? Why are they picking numbers in the user range? If applications are going to start doing this, it could be a problem.

Just did an upgrade and it took 12 hours??

Have a notebook that I had installed Fedora on some time ago. Have upgraded it via DNF a few times, but this time I actually was watching it versus just coming back later to find it done. The clean installation only took about 20 minutes originally, but I've added a lot of things to it. Showed about 5000 packages. Download was fine with about 5.3G, and then the upgrade reboot. It showed 9999 items, with the installation of the new packages, and the cleanup of the old, and finally the verify complete. Ended up taking just over 12 hours? No microphone audio -

I rarely have computer audio problems, it usually just works. But today I need to record voice and it does not do anything, pulse audio shows rear microphone plugged in and the level is turned up. aplay produces a test sound from the speaker and sound works as expected, just no mic audio. This a recent Fedora-30 upgrade from F-29. I don't often need the mic so I don't know if this is an artifact of an earlier problem. I tried two mics, both are old, one is ancient, but I have used them in the past. Re-install Fedora without destroying user data

On a default Fedora installation with a sufficiently large disk, /home is a separate filesystem and should not contain any required system files. Thus it ought to be possible to completely re-install Fedora, the same version as was previously installed, without over-writing /home. I'd like to do this with kickstart, if possible. I think Anaconda offers enough options but I find the documentation a bit confusing for this purpose. Is anyone aware of an online reference describing how to do this? -- Dave Close

My laptop has more frequently failed to resume from suspend, and I am looking for more information so that I can make a bug report that will be useful to both the Linux kernel team, Dell, and Fedora. xRDP login, then a blank green screen

Hi All, I just upgraded two Fedora 28 servers to Fedora 30. Both have/had xRDP running on them. After the upgrade, one works perfectly. The other one, after you enter Xorg, username, password, it switches to a big green screen, then eventually times out with: connecting to sesman ip 127.0.0.1 port 3350 sesman connect ok sending login info to session manager, please wait... login successful for display 10 started connecting connection problem, giving up some problem For the life of me, I can't figure out what is different between the two servers. I reused the good one's xrdp.ini and Xwrapper.config. The hardware is identical, except that the drive in tne working one are mechanical and the problem one are SSD. Bonjour, I sent several messages about kernel updates and grubby. Once upon a time I made 4 partitions on a ssd drive where the system is installed. I use raid1+lvm on sda1 and sdb1 I put the a /boot partition (raid1) for a debian install on sda3 and sdb3 I also put /boot partition (raid1) for a fedora install on sda2 and sdb2 I put a / partition (raid1+lvm) with label "debian-racine" (at that time I had a debian install) on sda4 and sdb4 I put a / partition (raid1+lvm) with label "fedora-racine" for a fedora install. So I had two linux installs: one was debian the other was fedora. I abandonned debian and used the debian partition to install a fedora version. I wanted to keep two different partitions: on one partition fedora-n on the other fedora-(n+1). Then appears the "dnf system upgrade" and I disabled the my sda3-sda4 partitions and only used sda1-sda2 partitions (with label "debian-racine") for my system. Everything was ok untill grubby replaced grub2-mkconfig: when there is a kernel update, grubby uses the disabled sda3-sda4 partitions as the / parttion in the /boot/grub2/grub.cfg file. I have now destroyed these partitions but grubby still uses them and writes a faulty /boot/grub2/grub.cfg file. Where does it find that these partitions still exist? I can't upgrade my system now because I fear that the boot config file will refer to a partition wich no longer exists on my system. Hello! Wine 4.8 started offering the ability to compile parts of itself as Windows binaries instead of Linux binaries but Fedora had not followed suit. This is changing. The Fedora Wine 4.10 update will switch to use MinGW to compile those Windows binaries. This will keep Fedora mostly in line with upstream. Please provide karma feedback on the following updates. I'd like to see how it reacts to a large user base. Method to create local font server so that browser gets fonts from locally installed fonts.

Fedora provides lots of fonts, and I have lots of them installed. I would like the browser to use them instead of going out on the web to find fonts for pages it is rendering. A nice to have feature would be a mapping of common fonts to substitute fonts if they aren't available. For instance, if a web page calls for Times-Roman, and I don't have that installed, the server substitutes a reasonable alternative. This would be mapped to things like fonts.googleapis.com so that I would still get a reasonable font when the browser wants to call there, but gets the local font server instead. Is there such a thing already in Fedora? If there isn't, would it be easy to create such a thing with existing tools? As an alternative, could I compile the local fonts into firefox so that they are directly available?

How to sign a locally compiled kernel so it can be booted with UEFI.

I compiled a fedora kernel locally. When I tried to boot it in UEFI, it failed because it wasn't signed. Which it is supposed to. I then searched and found the procedure for generating local keys using openssl, getting the public key into mok, generating the certificate, the pkcs12 structure, putting it in the pesign database, signing the kernel, and rebooting. It still doesn't boot. Is there anyone here who has a successful technique for signing a locally compiled kernel so it will boot under UEFI? I found some extreme measures like taking over all signing, but I think it is a little early for those. And, of course, I could turn off secure boot, but I'll give it a chance before doing that. Evening all, I'm after setting up an email client, I've tried thunderbird for my gmail account, but I get a google complaint about the client not being secure enough. Is there another recommended email client? Or can we make thunderbird more secure to pass the google checks? Thanks in advance D.

I have a file that I encrypt using gpg like this: cat foobar | gpg --symmetric > foobar.gpg Up until Fedora 30, it was prompting me for the password right there, at the prompt. In Fedora 30 it pops up a dialog, which I find very annoying. I don't know if this is related to gnome-keyring. Is there a way to disable it? Thanks!

mariadb vs community-mysql on F30

QtCreator on F29

Since upgrading to Fedora 29 (yes, I tend to be a bit behind), I've been having problems using QtCreator as I always have to work on LyX. Specifically, QtCreator fails to find a lot of included files, with the result that there are gazillions of 'parse errors' displayed in the editor. For example, our own generated config.h is not found, and QtCreator complains that none of the Qt headers are found. Any idea what has changed or what I might do? I've tried deleting all the *.creator files, etc. Riki

Hello, Since I upgrade to fedora 30, I experience very often a frozen of the graphics login process (gnome). Actually, if I am inactive, the screen turn to lock, and I cannot unlock it. gnome will not start

I use Mate as my DE but would like to have gnome available as well. However I must have a configuration error I can not find as I've not been able to login to a gnome environment for about 3 years. If I create a test user, that user can login to a gnome environment. But when I try I get one of two results, either the screen goes blank, never to change, or I get a gnome flash screen "Opps, something went wrong!". I've tried deleting all "~/.gnome..." related directories including those under ~/.config and ~/.local. But still no joy. This has been the situation on my desktop system since about F24 (currently F29) and carried over to a new F29 laptop where I copied most of my home dir from my desktop. When there were multiple gnome environments available, Xorg, Wayland, ???, they all fail. Though I've looked, I may have missed log entries pointing me to the problem. Hello, I need a gnuplot complied with libcerf In fedora 28, I recompiled gnuplot from 5.2.5, and every thing was fine. In fedora 30, I tried several things/ 1) recompile the version 5.2.5 from my previous package (source and spec). But now, it complains because wxGTK-devel is needed by gnuplot-5.2.5-2.fc30.x86_64 I cannot get a wxGTK-devel compatible with fc30. wxGTK-devel-2.8.12-31.fc29.x86_64.rpm canot be installed I cannot find a wxGTK-devel src.rpm (only wxGTK) 2) I recompile gnuplot.5.2.7-1.1.src.rpm from the OpenSuse distribution But when I want to install, I get: Error: Transaction check error: file /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/gnuplot/gnuplot-lua-tikz.sty from install of gnuplot-5.2.7-1.1.x86_64 conflicts with file from package gnuplot-latex-5.0.6-11.fc30.noarch I cannot find a gnuplot-latex for fedora 30, and I cannot find a gnuplot-latex. F30 window switcher

I have my window-switcher in gnome3 configured to switch only between windows on the same workspace and not to group windows. I upgraded to Fedora 30 yesterday and this setting seems to be lost. Gsettings shows this setting is set to true: gsettings get org.gnome.shell.window-switcher current-workspace-only true Also, this is checked in dconf-editor. Any ideas how to fix this?

What to prune?

I run Mate under F30. I assume Mate calls a lot of Gnome code (most or all of what Gnome3 didn't change). So I never worry about any new app bringing Gnome stuff with it. Until recently, I also made minor but important use of Konqueror and K3B; I've noticed, when sometimes I've added them to a straight Mate install, that I seem to get a whopping share of the rest of KDE with them. I do not use anything else from KDE as far as I know; but I know I don't know much. BQ1 (Big Question 1) If I were to remove all of KDE, how would I do it? Find KDE in dnfdragora and follow my nose?? I had thought I could command "dnf remove kde" or "dnf remove KDE," and then go through the resulting list with a fine-tooth comb; but neither of those commands does anything, claiming instead not to have found anything. BQ2 How much, at an educated guess, would I remove? Or is there a way actually to ascertain how much? Problem with Gnome remaining offline

Hi I have a laptop with Fedora 30 and on it I use VPN. Now after I upgraded from Fedora 29 I've got the problem that Gnome applications like Evolution and Gnome Software don't work anymore because they think the computer is offline when VPN is activated. Also the wifi icon in the upper right hand side corner has a question mark over it. But in actuality there is the computer is online, I can use applications like Firefox normally. Also in Gnome Settings -> Wifi it tells me it is connected. First questions - can I some how tell applications like Evolution and Gnome Software to just ignore whether it thinks it is online or offline? Second question - how could I find out why Gnome thinks it is offline? Cheers Robin

5.1 kernel and 32 bit executables?

I have some very, very old (ancient, in fact) 32 bit statically linked executables run as part of a testbed. With the new 5.1.6-300.fc30.x86_64 kernel installed this morning, they are all failing because the programs are confused by something in the initial code before they even get to the main program. Anyone know if there is some major new difference in i386 support in the new kernel? (When I get a chance I'll boot the old kernel and make sure it still works and this isn't something different than I suspect).

Cloning of existing fedora install failing at switch root. Does systemd keep system state?

Hi, I'm trying to clone an existing Fedora install, just a / partition and a /boot partition, both ext4. I use rsync, # rsync -C -x -u -a -v -A -X /mnt/old/ /mnt/new to clone both partitions from a running Fedora. I then clean up the /etc/fstab and /boot/grub2/grub.cfg by changing the UUIDs of the / and boot partitions. Formerly, that would be enough. I would run mkconfig to find the new installs from an existing Fedora, and boot into them from the grub menu of that existing install. That failed at switch root. Research found that the initramfs is now hostonly, so will not boot on a different root. I generated a new initramfs using dracut with --no-hostonly on the existing / old install, and copied it to the new /boot. Then altered the new grub.cfg to use that as the initramfs, ran mkconfig in the existing / old install to pick up the change, and rebooted. Still not working, though it now fails because systemd kills itself after switch root. And hangs because it can't find /bin/bash. As near as I can tell, everything is there. /usr/sbin/init links to /usr/lib/systemd/systemd, and the initramfs has those links in it, so why is switch root failing? The only thing I can come up with is that systemd somehow keeps track of the system it was installed on, and is failing to find something from the old system because it isn't mounted. Can anyone offer any insight?

Hi All, I updated two virtually identical Fedora 28 servers to Fedora 30 yesterday. The first one had mechanical drives and the second had SSD drives. Motherboard, memory, processor were identical. The second one when perfectly. The first one, after issuing "dnf system-upgrade reboot" did its thing up to the transaction checks. I got bored and walked away. a minute later it was all booted back up, but was still in 28. I googled the issue and could not really find anything. So I reissued "dnf system-upgrade reboot" and this time it completed the upgrade. Go figure ... The first one with the mechanical drives and took 2 hours and 38 minutes. The second one with the SSD drives and took 36 minutes. -T

Hello, on a pc where I had both Windows 7 and Fedora 29, with boot loader configured in linux and grub2, I have run the update to Fedora 30 using the usual procedure described here, and already completed on another pc (but without the dual boot...): https://fedoramagazine.org/upgrading-fedora-29-to-fedora-30/ after the commad sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot I saw the laptop rebooting, installing all the about 9k packages, than verifying them and as soon as it had verified the last one, I saw again reboot (is it expected?), but then in grub options I only see memtest windows 7 windows 7 recovery environment So I think something went bad in updating grub2 config... Any hint on how to recover grub, eventually booting from a usb stick in any way? Already happened to anyone else with f29 to f30? I followed on the same laptop the same procedure without problems from f26 (or f27) to f29 until this problem. Thanks, Gianluca

Bonjour, "a stop job is running for rc.local compatibility no limit" This a new fantasy of systemd on my system when I shut it down and there is "no limit": after half a hour, the computer stops with this message: "forcibly powering off: job timed out". This is boring! Why this? I made no update, no change in my configuration which worked correctly... What is this job? We cannot know... *A job* that's all we can know! Looking at the journal (journalctl -u rc-local) shows nothing wrong. How to stop this weird behavior? systemd was supposed to increase the speed, in fact since systemd replaced the previous system boot takes more time (30s instead of 10s if no "start job is running" occurs...) and I did not see any change in the speed of the computer. OT: missing hard drive (SSD) with Fedora 30

Hi, My apologies for the OT nature of this post. I have a Dell T5810 which has a SSD drive that is 2 x 60gb stripped to 120Gb. (ONe was a raid version of the other.) This has /, /boot, /usr/local and swap as partitions. I also have three 2TB (SATA, non-SSD) hard drives (one that is raid of the other and the third simply backing up usign rsync every hour, since I am old-fashioned and like seeing what is happening). This has my /home and is not in issue. Last week, I switched the configuration to UEFI boot from Legacy, reinstalled Fedora 30, and updated to the latest stable 5.1.5. Everything was going fine until last night when there was an exorbitant demand on memory (because of a program which progressively asked for more memory) and everything froze. So I had to do a hard reboot. However, the machine now does not come up. All I get is the splash screen 120GB drive "Offline" Does anyone have suggestions as to what to do to get this drive back online? Apologies again. Hello, Something strange to me: it is said: Fedora Media Writer destroys all data on the USB stick. If you need a non-destructive write method (to preserve existing data on your USB stick) or support for 'data persistence', you can use the livecd-iso-to-disk utility on Fedora. Then, livecd-iso-to-disk Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-30-1.1.iso /dev/sdX where X could be (if I am correct) c (/dev/sdc) Why this will preserve the USB stick? I would have understand if it was /dev/sdc1 (or something else). Doing livecd-iso-to-disk Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-30-1.1.iso /dev/sdc would preserve my partitions sdc1, sdc2 ? I am missing something. google-chrome weirdness

Google-chrome has started rendering the "Oswald" web font with all the characters in a string mostly on top of one another, but only for my user. See: https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Oswald If I create a completely new user, log out and log back in as new user, google-chrome works. That web page above renders just fine. If I merely rename ~/.config/google-chrome and run google-chrome as my original user, it still screws up the font. So who knows where besides ~/.config/google-chrome google-chrome will get information? Because something about my user screws it up even when I try to start from scratch with no saved profile.

When did Konqueror become enslaved to Google? Is there a way to liberate it? Or at least to get it back to displaying man pages? I don't use Google, except by way of Duckduckgo or other privacy- providing intermediary. In fact, my main and almost only use of Konqueror is for man pages, which fonts big enough for my ancient eyeballs format unreadably elsewhere. Fedora 30 and problem with monitor resolution detection in gdm/Gnome?

Hello, I have an Intel Skull NUC, model NUC6i7KYK, with Intel video adapter 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Iris Pro Graphics 580 (rev 09) detailed specs here: https://www.intel.it/content/www/it/it/products/docs/boards-kits/nuc/nuc-ki… It is connected to a Dell U2515H: https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/06291c It was initially installed with F29 (with Wayland disabled in /etc/gdm/custom.conf) and used resolution always being 2560x1440. Almost when F30 was released I upgraded and no problems until today. When powering on I see no user icons in gdm. So I switched to sddm and lxdm and there I was able to see my users login, but both trying Gnome session and Mate session it seems I don't see the top bars. While in Mate with Alt+F2 I opened a terminal window and executed xdpyinfo. Strangely it reported a not possible resolution.... screen #0: dimensions: 5120x1440 pixels (1354x381 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch depths (7): 24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32 root window id: 0x162 depth of root window: 24 planes So I decided to force 2560x1440 with this file, named 00-monitor.conf and put into directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ml522neE-l6hsGKtGXnWHnz2cpxCsuJO/view?usp=… After reboot still gdm is not able to show me any user icons (perhaps it doesn't use the conf file), and again using lxdm and sddm and choosing Gnome session I don't see top bar and other things. Instead, i can use without any problem Mate and now I can see the top bar and correctly use the session. Opening xdpyinfo from a terminal I correctly get what forced: screen #0: dimensions: 2560x1440 pixels (677x381 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch depths (7): 24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32 root window id: 0x162 depth of root window: 24 planes Things above let me think about a problem in Gnome itself, impacting gdm too.. bugzilla and python2-virtualenv

Hi, I'm trying to file a bug report in bugzilla.redhat.com and seem to be having a hard time finding the package in question. For some reason, even though the package exists in fc30, the bugzilla interface doesn't have python2-virtualenv in it's database and so I can't file the bug report. FYI, it seems that down the road between fc28 and fc30 (don't have an fc29 handy to test this) the python2-virtualenv package doesn't come with `/usr/bin/virtualenv`. Is there a reason for the missing binary? HP M254dw anyone?

Just curious to know if anyone has successfully gotten one of these M254dw printers to work under Fedora (or any Linux distro for that matter). The hplip-3.18.12 version that comes with Fedora supposedly supports this printer; the release notes say support for the M254dw was introduced several minor versions prior to this one. However, it doesn't work for me. If I use the recommended Postscript driver when configuring the printer, then attempting to print images just prints a Postscript error page, and attempting to print text in duplex results in only the front side of the first page printing. Needless to say, the printer works fine under Windows 10, so it's not a hardware issue. There is a newer version of the driver (3.19.5) that can be downloaded, but the installer craps out. It first prompts me for the root/superuser password, but then proceeds to use sudo (which would presumably need MY password, not root's; trying to give my password results in a complaint that it is not correct). All the commands where it tries to use sudo report failure, although if I run them manually, they work. So it is clearly confused about whether it should be using su or sudo to run commands. This is obviously a bug in the installer, but HP's "file a bug" link points to the Launchpad site (where Ubuntu bugs are reported). I don't know if HP will even see what I posted, and I'll most likely just end up looking like a dork for posting about a Fedora issue on the Ubuntu reporting site. And in the end, there's no guarantee that the later version will work any better than the Fedora-packaged one; it just seemed worth a shot. I'm mainly curious to know if anyone has this printer working under Fedora, and if so, how you configured it. Thanks, --Greg

dnf workstation collection

Is there a way to make sure a system that was upgraded multiple times instead of installed from scratch has all the rpm packages that the current workstation collection has? I notice some things like the login screen wallpaper program that is present on fresh installs is missing from an upgraded system. Is there an @something dnf collection that I can install to bring that aspect of an old system up to date? -wolfgang
