somethings gone wrong with last qt updates
by sixpack13
Hallo
I compile homebrewed vanilla kernels and configure them via "make xconfig".
I guess the F30 updates since last friday [1] damaged something regarding qt (???).
all menue options in the output of the above command are gone and the upper panel is nearly completey blank, without any font !
I checked against another kernel which was working some days before, now I get the same above error, so I guess the bug is NOT in the kernel tree (qconf ...).
please, could someone check this ?
and/or any hint ?
[1]
I guess something with the following updates is gone wrong (NOT sure, though):
adwaita-qt4
adwaita-qt5

Using bind for a local caching name server, is this configuration
correct?
by stan
I switched DNS from my ISP to free dns services on the web to avoid
tracking and data being sold. I started seeing a lot of "looking up
xyz.com" in the browser, so I decided to set up bind as a locally
caching name server. However, even though it seems to be configured
the way it is supposed to be, I am still seeing those messages, even
when I hit back in the browser, so for pages I just visited that I
think should be cached.
Here is my /etc/named.conf.
//
// named.conf
//
// Provided by Red Hat bind package to configure the ISC BIND named(8)
DNS // server as a caching only nameserver (as a localhost DNS resolver
only). //

Would I be better off using something like privoxy or squid? I saw
something on the web about squid not working for https addresses, which
is problematic since the movement is to everything https. Is this a
concern?

Caja and Files - not all files appearing
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
While reviewing the contents of a directory using Caja, I saw that not all
files were appearing that were visible when reviewing the list of files
from the command line.
I've moved/copied those files that are not visible in Caja's pane to other
directories (say, /var/tmp), and they are still not visible.
Is this a bug or a setting? In particular, I wanted to edit a Python
script using gedit, and I couldn't find it using gedit. While I can easily
open it using vim.
Suggestions? Views? Opinions?
Thanks!
Max

open with options???
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Xfce 4.13, Fedora 30
In my various file managers (Thunar, Krusader), when I right
click on a file and select Open With, I get a list of
programs.
How do I remove items from this list, especially the
repeats?
Many thanks,
-T

Re: Mate on latest fedora releases
by JD
Installing latest mate desktop (from rpmfusion) on
Fedora 30, 29, 28, 27 ...24, 23 22
DOES NOT work.
It no longer displays the desktop items that used to be displayed in
previous versions of Fedora.
The mouse pointer (if it even appears .... as it does not appear unless
the user miraculously is able to start a gui app - such as a terminal),
and even then, it appears as a bold lower case x
So, would appreciate some info on how to remedy the situation.
Converting friends to fedora is becoming difficult when they ask me to install
the mate desktop.

JD

[OT] best (Linux based!) all-in-one NAS-VPN-firewall?
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
One of my jobs in the next months will be Free Software teaching/
consulting for a small private school. Part of the consulting consists
of helping the school to evaluate how to set up some infrastructure,
using Linux/Free Software as much as possible.
I have been just asked to, quoting, "suggest an all-in-one
NAS-VPN-firewall for the school". We are talking ~80 students in the
8/13 years age range, maybe more after summer, plus teachers and
administration. The "all-in-one" part is the key requirement, and also
the reason why I am asking for recommendations based on your
real-world experience. I know how to handle this stuff the 100%
DIY/hacker way, but that is not an option in this case. Me, I wouldn't
mind but, while the school would like to use more FOSS also for
administration and internal services, actual teaching has much higher
priority this year.
Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Marco

Most of the system can't print to network printer.
by Alan Evans
FC29, Cinnamon desktop, fully updated. The printer is an Epson ET-4500,
connected through WiFi. The Administration->Print Settings dialog detects
the printer. Printing a test page works like a charm. But it seems like
nothing else included with the system can print. xreader and xed for
example, try to print then a little bubble in the corner of the desktop
tells me that printing was cancelled. System log...

However, LibreOffice Writer (which, I understand, does its own printer
magic) has no trouble printing.
I googled around and found some similar issues, all many years old. Those
solutions did not help me. I tried getting the print driver directly from
Epson. That also didn't help. At this point, I don't really know how to
proceed with troubleshooting.

Restarting Display Manager
by Javier Perez
Hi
Is it possible to restart display manager without killing all the apps open?
Nouveau has a tendency to crash more often that I like and each time it
does it, i restart display manager. Each time a restart it, all the apps
are killed.
1. Is there a way to restart Nouveau without having to restart display
manager?
2. Is there a way to restart display manager while keeping the apps alive?
I guess not because the apps depend on display manager but I wonder if such
a thing is feasible.
Thanks

UDEV RULES
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
in order to backing up data when I connect to computer an USB HD, I wrote
the follow UDEV rule :
------------------------------------------------------------------
SUBSYSTEM=="block", ACTION=="add", ATTRS{vendor}=="152d",
ATTRS{model}=="0578", SYMLINK+="external%n",
RUN+="/usr/bin/mrs-auto_backup.sh"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
the rule is the content of the file :*
/etc/udev/rules.d/10.autobackup.rules *
that I self created .
I learned this method at the link :
https://www.tecmint.com/auto-backup-files-to-usb-media-in-linux/ *("How to
backup files to USB media when connected*")
As well I tried in many different combinations and parameters values, never
I was able to execute the script inside the rule.
-----
In order to get the USB HD characteristic of the USB Hard Disk to use for
backing-up the data I used the command :
*<sudo udevadm info -q all -n /dev/sdc>*
and its output is transcribed below
Could someone help me to understand because this rule doesn't works ?
thank you
regards
Angelo
