odd screen behavior during screen saver / idle

All; I have a new Lenovo P73 laptop, have had it for about 2 weeks so It's the latest model / hardware specs are below: I've noticed every once in awhile, very inconsistently I return to the laptop, move the mouse to unlock the screen saver and find that the main laptop screen is all scrunched onto 1/2 of the screen, split vertically and the right half of the screen is black. The full desktop is shown but it's all squished into the left half of the screen. Only a reboot seems to fix it. how to reconfigure gnome from scratch

I've been using mate as my DM on Fedora for years. For about the same number of I've been unable to login to a gnome session. I've go no need except curiosity. But everytime I select gnome (Xorg, classic, Wayland, ...) the screen blanks and I get a full screen literally saying "Opps, something went wrong". I can create a new user and login to a gnome session, so the software is there and functional. I'm assuming it is something in my configuration files. But I've been unable to delete the correct combination of .dirs and files. The situation has persisted from about F23 or F24 through F31. Across 2 new computers where I copied my home directory to the new systems. What must I delete to make my user look like a first time gnome user? Thanks, stay well, Jon -- Jon H. gnucash / flatpak / flathub related

I subtly mentioned in my last post, that I did not have the new version of gnucash installed natively, but instead as a flatpak from flathub. However, I just tested the gnucash flatpak version, and it did not work, so I removed the flatpak of gnucash. I natively installed the new gnucash, and it seems to work nominally. David Locklear

dnf update question

I use the following command to update $ sudo dnf update & flatpak update Is there a better way to do this. Does anyone have a script or alias thing that does all that with just sudo dufu or something simple ? I am aware, that all I have to do is hit the up arrow key, and it will type the last used commands. I think all Linux commands in all distros do that. Right ? David Locklear

What download image for i686

I recently acquired an old HP Mini 110 with an Intel Atom N270 CPU. Trying my default Fedora install told me it couldn't boot the X86_64 version, so I guess I need an i686 version. Scouring getfedora.org and archives.fedoraproject.org, I don't see one. I thought F30 still worked on 32 bit. Where can I find the most recent (KDE) version that can still boot on it? Thanks.

Where has access to windows workgroups gone?

caja, dolphin, konqueror, thunar and nautilus all fail to connect to the windows systems on the local network. I can connect with smbclient and cifs in a terminal but that doesn't allow the full capability of click and drag to move files and examine them. Is athere something I am missing tahat will restore the functionality?

Any one have luck putting Fedora on a Beaglebone Black?

So yeah, it's older but I got it for free and wanted to see if I could use it. From what I can tell the armv7 images should work on it. arm-image-installer does some extra "magic" for the am355x processor but it won't boot it. If I hold down the button while I plug it in, nothing happens. No indicator lights at all. I've been able to boot the Debian image from SD and got it written to the internal eMMC. Actually the Cloud9 platform preinstalled is pretty nice. But I'd still like to put Fedora on it :) Thanks, Richard

selinux issues -- for test system/httpd user access

Hey list! 1st, thanks to all the help I've gotten over time from the list. Stay safe everyone!! I'm finally jumping into deploying selinux on a test system. My use case: To create a test local VM To fire up httpd/mysql on the VM To create a couple of test users on the VM Create a test static website under /var/www/html/cat using index.html aa.php I've already got the VM, test users, httpd, etc.. And things run with selinux disabled. Now it's time to take the jump, and engage selinux! My selinux needs: to setup selinux attributes/security to allow apache/httpd to run correctly to allow the httpd to handle/process the index.html to allow the httpd to handle/process the aa.php also, say I create test user 'bob' 'bob' will have a dir /home/bob I want 'bob' to be able to create/edit files, and to be able to copy files, to read/write/delete files into the /var/www/html/cat dir structure I've looked through numerous docs/sites and see a bunch of stuff. But I really don't want to screw this up, given that I realize that messing this up can be painful to try to figure out what I did wrong. So: I'm trying to figure out what I need to do for selinux for the user 'bob' I'm trying to figure out what I need to do for selinux for the apache/httpd process Trying to understand what I need to do to allow user 'bob' access to change the /var/www/html/cat dirs.. Thoughts/Comments are more than welcome ps: Once I get the basic above things working, I'll be expanding to handle mysql processes, as well as allowing external dev/test servers to update the 'prod' system.

What are the top 5? Sorry, but there aint, and probably wont ever, be such a thing. I know of people who downloaded an image, and subsequently installed it over 100,000 times. No one will ever know about such schemes. Only the use of Distro's with commercial support (RHEL, SLES, Canononical) will know how much their product is been used, and they are unlikely to tell. Hi All, If you are getting into servers, here is a tip. Install qemu-kvm and those OS'es as virtual machines you are targeting as clients. You can set up your own mini network to learn and configure things. I get away with three virtual machines running at the same time on my system before it bogs down. -T

For your information, Flathub, is still on the old version, 92.4, as far as I can tell. Fedora flatpak project has 1.0 beta 2 version. Rawhide has the new 1.0 rc1 and I just now installed it natively. The dependencies appear to all be the same as in the Version 32 directory, except for "graphviz." which has a slightly newer point-release in Rawhide. nfs vs samba

Hi Not a flame war. I'm going to have a use case, where I spin up a lot of cloud VM. The worker VM does some work, and then returns the resulting work/files to a single VM. I'm looking at doing a NFS/Samba server for the storage VM. Any thoughts one way or the other. The storage VM will be accessible from the client VMs. I'm assuming the client VM would mount the storage VM, and do some sort of write to the device. The overall process would also have to employ selinux on both the client, as well as the storage VM. Thoughts/Comments?? thanks

several Rawhide questions

Is it correct to say Rawhide updated today from version 33-0.3 to 33-0.4, and what does that mean ? Or does that update just mean the repo was renamed or renumbered, or something like that ? Is 33.-0.4 noticeably better than 33-0.3, or are the tiny incremental improvements and regressions nearly impossible to notice without a magnifying glass ? Question 4 & 5: I have only one gtk2 package on my system and it seems to be related to the anaconda installer. gtk2 version 2.24.32-7.fc32 Is this package for those users not installing Gnome ? Will it hurt to delete gtk2 if I am using the Gnome DE, or does GIMP and other things need it ? I am using flatpaks for most of my additional software. Question or observation 6: I assume the reason, that the backgrounds keep updating in Rawhide ( yet remain identical to version 32 ), is simply due to lack of man/woman-power. Right ? Desktop files in F31

I just had to replace the SSD in my laptop, which for reasons that would deserve a discussion thread of their own, I ended up having to do a complete reinstall. Then I restored all my home directory files. So what I have is a clean F31, but my own account from the old F30 system was restored. I am using "GNOME on Xorg" as the desktop environment. The problem I have is with Desktop files (in ~/Desktop). First I didn't see them at all, then found with some Googling that I needed to turn off display of the Trash icon, which now allows me to see the Desktop files. There are two issues: 1) The desktop icons are visible, but the Icons=file line in them seems to be ignored. 2) When I double click one, the Exec=command is executed, but it also opens a full-screen window that I figured out is "gnome-games". For #1, I first did a little research with dnf and discovered that I needed to install the "comps-extras" package to bring back the files in /usr/share/pixmaps/comps . But this did not fix the issue, even after I restarted gnome-shell (with ALT-F2 and "r"). So I logged out and back in again, but no joy. I did check to ensure that my account can read the specified image files. For #2, I would like to know how I can stop the execution of gnome-games. With a little trial and error, I discovered that if I iconify the gnome-games window the first time it comes up, then the Desktop icons double-click-execute properly, but if I instead kill the gnome-games window, then it pops up again next time I double-click an icon. A sample Desktop file is below. Where is the bootloader installed on GPT formatted disk?

Hi, I'm installing Fedora 31 with a kickstart file that contains bootloader --location=mbr #Same when omitting location parameter, mbr is default zerombr clearpart --all part /boot/efi --fstype=efi --size=200 --ondisk=sda part / --fstype=ext4 --size=1 --ondisk=sda --grow According to the documentation (https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora/f31/install-guide/appendixes/Ki…) this should install the bootloader to a BIOS boot partition: "On a GPT-formatted disk, this option will install stage 1.5 of the boot loader into the BIOS boot partition." clearpart seems to create a gpt on a UEFI machine and an mbr on a legacy BIOS machine per default, i.e. when no explicit disklabel parameter is specified. And indeed: # parted /dev/sda print Model: VMware, VMware Virtual S (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 8590MB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Disk Flags: Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1049kB 211MB 210MB fat16 EFI System Partition boot, esp 2 211MB 8589MB 8378MB ext4 However, I've not specified a BIOS boot partition in the kickstart file, nor is one created automatically. fedora website -- firewall config/setup

Hi. Forgive me! I'm setting up a test webserver/system, and I'm trying to make sure I get the firewall stuff setup correctly. Actually, I'm trying to make sure the firewall/selinux is all setup correctly. For the firewall, I'm trying to find example/samples of what the firewall cmds/services/ports should be to lock the system down. I've seen different sites that say different things, so I figured I'd ask here as well. So, if you have an example config/cmd display I can check out, that would be cool. At the same time, given that I'm new to selinux, if you have pointers/thoughts on how to set this up, I'm ready to "test"!! I don't want to run a test server with selinux turned off. If you also have websites that I should check, let me know. I may very well have missed the exact information I'm searching for. Thanks!

kickstart installation - DNF error in POSTIN scriplet of flatpak-selinux

I am doing a Kickstart installation of Fedora Workstation from the Fedora Server NetInstall ISO. Everything is going as expected until I hit the installation of the package: flatpak-selinux. It fails with the error: DNF error in POSTIN scriplet of flatpak-selinux Well I wish Anaconda would let me continue the installation if one package failed, but no I have to exit the installer and begin downloading 2.13 GB again and again. First question, any way for Anaconda to ignore such errors in the Kickstart file ? Secondly, what should I do about this error ? An open bug already exists here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1723118 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1723940 One has a status of CLOSED and one has a status of MODIFIED. Now I can understand CLOSED since it was a duplicate but what does modified mean ? Also there are no solutions so what do I do now? I actually got this bug in VirtualBox once during the testing of my Kickstart file but it got resolved automatically on a next install. This is not the case for my laptop though, it hits the error every time. These are the packages in my Kickstart: %packages @^workstation-product-environment @admin-tools @authoring-and-publishing @c-development @container-management @d-development @development-tools @editors @headless-management @libreoffice @mate-applications @network-server @office @rpm-development-tools @sound-and-video @system-tools @window-managers Should I delete some packages ? flatpak-selinux seems like a mandatory package, is there any way to not install it ? Email notification sound -

Something has changed in the last few days to cause the Thunderbird email notification sound to stop. Normally the preferences play button will test the tone but it now remains silent. I run F31 Mate. When I run dnf upgrade, I often get dozens of kf5 entries (23 today, by my count) -- presumably because I install and sometimes use K3B or Konqueror; I don't think I ever launch any other KDE app, at least not knowingly. In particular, I used to use Konqueror mainly for reading man pages, because it was the only way I knew to get a display I could read; but now it doesn't do man pages at all, alas! Also, formerly neither K3B nor Brasero always burned media I wanted; but one or the other always did. I'm wondering a couple things. Does all that kf5 stuff, sitting there almost (?) unused, amount to a security hazard? Does it slow anything down perceptibly? (I inveterately use too many browsers with too many tabs.) Might I ought to bite the bullet, removing K3B and Konqueror?

Custom ISO won't boot to Fedora

I am unable to boot the custom ISO I have created. I have just created a Custom ISO from the Fedora Live ISO using the following command: genisoimage -U -r -v -T -J -joliet-long -V "Fedora-WS-Live-31-1-9" -volset "Fedora-WS-Live-31-1-9" -A "CDLABEL=Fedora-WS-Live-31-1-9" -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -eltorito-alt-boot -e images/efiboot.img -no-emul-boot -o ../Fedora_Custom.iso . But I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't get the Live ISO to boot. Its stuck at the bootmenu. DMESG shows this cable bad message once every 5 seconds, which is a bit annoying.

Fedora Infrastructure issue 8824: test message.

I was asked by one of the people working Fedora Infrastructure issue #8824 ("posts submitted to Fedora Users List getting lost") to try sending a 'text only' email and see if that gets dropped. I logged out, logged in to my root account where the font is set to Free Serif (not a UKai font!). I made sure root's Thunderbird was set to text only (no HTMl) for sending messages. I shut down Thunderbird. I re-launched Thunderbird. This is the test message. To ensure a good test, it's a few paragraphs long with a few sentences in each paragraph. I wonder if this will reach the user's list. Are there any occurrences of upper case 'A' with a "hat" (circumflex) in this message. I did not put any. But they have been occurring between sentences. They only show up when the message is viewed with Thunderbird's "View Source" function. Time's up! Typing fingers down! Hand in the test!

hallo guys and dolls be aware trouble is in the air :-) : it just happens to me during commandline update 1 h ago that I updated to selinux-policy-3.14.5-35.fc32 it's marked as obsolete, but it was still available on the mirrors. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?search=selinux-policy&releases=F32 during update I got repeating error notifications from selinux troubeshooter, so I decided - I mean the update process mentioned that too - to autorelabel the box. That leads to the situation that I was unable login graphically (Gnome) ! my fix: booted with "selinux=0" and fetched the new selinux-policy-3.14.5-36.fc32 from here https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1491902 radicale needed a special treatment, but that fixed it -- sixpack13

Sizpack13/Samuel, Thanks for responding. This journal got jumbled somehow. I'm currently booted from a Live Fedora 31 system. I did this in the hope that the monitor would work. It did NOT. When I first connected this TV (2 years ago?) I did nothing special... it just worked. I have been running with kernel option "nomodeset" for a long time. Tried removing that with NO change in behavior. "stopped working" means: before power cycle, display worked perfectly, AFTER power cycle, TV had a box "NO SIGNAL" or "NO CONNECTION". I switched IDENTICAL CABLES with no change in behavior. Cables ARE DIRECTIONAL (Saphire 15'). Connected properly, i.e., arrows on both ends pointing AWAY from the computer. xrandr -q reports: HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) > what has happend between the working / non-working state ? just a power cycle > video related updates ? none that I know of. > video related BIOS settings still okay ? upgrade attempts are failing.

(f30 -> f31; gnome) I tried to upgrade my system from f30 to f31 as per the instructions. I entered "dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=31" Failed. The results are in the first attachment (problem1.txt). As the dnf output suggested, I tried "dnf system-upgrade download --skip-broken --refresh --releasever=31" Failed. The results are in the second attachment (problem2.txt). As the instructions suggested, I tried "dnf system-upgrade download --skip-broken --refresh --releasever=31 --best" Failed. The results are in the third attachment (problem3.txt). As both the dnf output and the instructions suggested, I tried "dnf system-upgrade download --skip-broken --refresh --releasever=31 --best --allowerasing" Failed. The results are in the fourth attachment (problem4.txt). I'm stuck. How do I get this upgrade to work?

grub-customizer doesn't show entries... how do I remove phantom kernels ?

Rant: HDMI sound hasn't worked forever ! Huge PITA.

I love Linux/GNU/OS. Fedora rocks. I really appreciate the work the devs and support people do. But... I'm really losing my patience with the whole HDMI sound bug situation. It has been a problem since May, 2019 IIRC. It appears that one aspect gets fixed and that breaks something elsewhere. Can we not just revert the whole code in question to what it was back when it worked until someone has a chance to properly fix things ? As far as I am concerned things have gotten a lot worse. HDMI sound used to need resetting because it appeared the buffer got corrupted from time to time. Now it takes 5 minutes to get sound working at all and this has to be repeated every time you log out or the computer goes to sleep. LG

I installed the new version of IceCat. I know nothing about IceCat, and had only briefly tried it once about 2 years ago in another distro. I looks like it will not allow me to log into Google. I use Google extensively. I think that it forces you ( out of the box ) to watch YouTube videos on ViewTube. CNN was all garbled mess, unusable. I assume IceCat is for those that like to go to the seedy places on the web, so I "tested" that, and the page I went to would not play videos. So, that was the extent of my 2020 IceCat experience. It just felt like something pre-NetScape from 1995. I will revisit it again someday. I have the new Firefox 75 ( in Rawhide ), and so I am enjoying the latest wayland improvements. I can only guess that IceCat will be this good in about 5 years. Right ? Feel free to correct me, as I really do not know what the heck I am talking about. David Locklear

Curious: Hang at open trying to rip dvd?

Anyone else experienced this: I have a nice modern LG WH16NS40 Blu-ray rewriter, and a nice modern computer case with zero drive bays, so I got an OWC external drive case with sata -> usb3 to hold the drive. Everything I've tried works like a champ on this drive except trying to rip a DVD. It hangs at open as long as I care to wait. (Blu-ray, no problem, cdrom, no problem, writing Blu-ray, no problem). The strace looks like: stat("/dev/sr0", {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(0xb, 0), ...}) = 0 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/dev/sr0", O_RDONLY <-- never finishes till I unplug it If I put the drive in another computer that does have an internal drive bay, it reads DVDs just fine with a direct sata connection. Meanwhile an old small portable USB powered pioneer drive can read DVDs just fine. Just curious if there is some kind of known bug out there. I guess my work-around is to always use the pioneer for DVDs.

All; I had a situation where a dnf update showed nothing to do but the "Software Updates" GUI had updates listed. Even did a "dnf clean all" and dnf still showed "Nothing to do". Clicked on the Software Updates GUI to install them and it did... Why did dnf not see them? Xsane can't see my scanner as user bobg, as root is detected. bobg]# scanimage -L device `genesys:libusb:001:006' is a Canon LiDE 110 flatbed scanner [bobg@Workstation-1 ~]$ lsusb Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04a9:1909 Canon, Inc. CanoScan LiDE 110 $ sane-find-scanner could not open USB device 0x04a9/0x1909 at 001:006: Access denied (insufficient permissions) I have no idea what permissions need fixing. Xsane was installed as su root and I tried reinstall from sudo from bobg, that made no difference. I rarely need the scanner and today when I do it wont work in Fedora 31 updated today. I have a simple backup system that starts off a backup once per night during the weekdays. Move files into storage device -

° I connected a WD Mycloud storage device to my LAN and would like to transfer some files from this Fedora 31 computer to it. Although it seems to work well enough with the iPhones it is primarily an Apple or Windows device and does not appear to be Linux friendly. Is there a way to load some files from this box directly without sending them to an ios device first? Setting up a new system with Fedora 31, but run into a problem with VirtualBox On running Virtual Box I get this message?? WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64) or it failed to load. Please try load the kernel module by executing as root dnf install akmod-VirtualBox kernel-devel-5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64 akmods --kernels 5.5.13-200.fc31.x86_64 && systemctl restart systemd-modules-load.service You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. I do the recommended options. dnf packages are already installed The akmods builds the moduals, and they are in the location But restarting the systemd-modules-load results in error. Running what it recommends for getting results with this, but can't find any recommendations?? On exact same machine with Fedora 29, this was working. This is a clean install on a new hard disk. LVM Merge hangs at 100%

LVM merging from snapshots don't work. I have two logical volume - one is for the entire system and one is a snapshot that I have created if I want to revert things if an upgrade breaks them. I am a novice user of Fedora Rawhide. Today, I did a fresh new clean install ( on an cheap old SSD ) of Rawhide as my only operating system. I used the nightly compose finder, and chose "Workstation live" for X86_64, using the last good iso "20200325." This was probably my 5th time to install Rawhide on hardware in the past year or two. I have been using Xfce in Rawhide for over 3 months, and I was biased against it from the start, so I can not give a fair review. Fedora Xfce just seemed so 2016, even in Rawhide. The final straw was that Firefox 75 is coming out soon ( with better wayland improvements ), and I missed wayland. Xfce probably won't get wayland for a long time. Right ? I use a lot of gnome apps ( but in flatpaks ). One of the first things I do after an install, is play FreeCell in Aisleriot Solitaire to see if I "feel anything," as I have played this game about 1,000 times ( maybe 10,000, LOL ! ) Anyways, I updated the packages, turned on the available 3rd party repo, installed flathub,powered off, installed flatpak of Aisleriot, rebooted, just to test reboot, and then played a game, and here I am. I installed htop ( fc32 ) and, it all looks good from here. I surfed the web, watched YouTube. All is nominal and functional from that perspective. LibreOffice preinstalled. Utility apps are already all grouped together so that looks nice. I am sending this email using this new install. Display Manager question

Last week, I replaced the file "default.png" in my background directory, and was delightfully enjoying a new custom backsplash, instead of the new fancy one that Fedora has ( light color blue with some rectangular glass cluster ). In my recent update yesterday, something replaced my custom backsplash with the old default.png. Why would an update do that ? This is the kind of stuff you can expect from living in Rawhide, so I am NOT complaining. And I am using Xfce, so the DM is LightDM, specifically, lightdm-1.30.0-8.fc32 ( Rawhide's current version, if using Xfce ) David Locklear P.S. It would be nice if distros offered an easier way to customize the login backsplash.

I just installed Fedora 31 on my laptop. I had created a volume group and logical volumes from the Anaconda installer itself. I had marked the checkbox for encrypting my fedora partition , and when booting I am asked my passphrase, so I thought everything was fine. But when I am booting into a live environment and do an `lsblk` . GRUB2 defaults to rescue after dnf update

I recently updated one of my F31 machines and rebooted it remotely. I was wondering why I couldn't get to it after a couple of minutes so I went out and switch the input to the PC (It's the multimedia machine) to be greeted by a rescue prompt. I rebooted again locally to find that when the grub menu appeared it was defaulting to the rescue line. Replicating an installation

Once I have installed a new disto and downloaded the RPMs that I use, is there a procedure by which I could gather together everything that I have added, so that I could transfer the files (RPMs, or whatever) to a local system, without resorting to the internet? (Or, at least, to a significant amount!) Thanks.

spinfinity plymouth theme mystery

This laptop boots with the spinfinity plymouth theme, and there's a white progress indication bar at the bottom of the display, progressing from left to right, during the boot. That other laptop, over there, also boots with the spinfinity plymouth theme, but there is no progress bar. Spinfinity just spins on its own, and that's the only thing that happens, until the desktop comes up. I compared the plymouth packages on the two laptops. The only difference is that the first laptop has plymouth-theme-solar theme installed, in addition to spinfinity; and all other plymouth packages are the same. I'll try installing the solar theme on the other laptop, but I can't see that making a difference. The absence of the progress bar, on the 2nd laptop, is a Scooby-Doo mystery to me.

dhcp client sometimes fails?

I'm using network, not NetworkManager. I've got a bridge set up with my (one and only) ethernet point connected to it. I'm running fedora 31. Randomly, when I reboot the system to get a new kernel or something, dhcp will fail to assign an IP address to the bridge. I'll reboot again and it will be OK (I have also been able to do an ifdown/ifup to get an IP addr). I once found a web page that said STP (spanning tree protocol) slowed things way down, and with my config I can't possibly have any loops, so I disable STP. That did indeed make network startup far more reliable, but it still sometimes fails. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there some magic I can perform to make it reliable? I don't have this problem when configured with a static IP, but they were redoing a lot of network infrastructure and recommended everyone switch to dhcp. It also seemed very reliable before I created the bridge (but I need the bridge to run virtual machines). Working from home, I've now become paranoid about installing updates that need a reboot for fear I won't be able to get to the machine again because the network never comes back up. Maybe I should install a script in rc.local that checks to see if an IP address was defined, and reboots again if not :-).

unusual display problem

[the images will be posted as replies due to size limits] For a while now I have the following problem. After boot and login things look OK, however moving any window shows terrible artifacts. Here is an example using xterm. 20200402_093920.jpg I open a small xterm Looks OK. 20200402_100028.jpg I do a reverse search: ^Rls -l At this point the whole line is filled with a repeated quote character. Doing other things will repeat a substring of what the text holds. Hitting 'end' key will show the full text followed by the quotes. Very difficult to work when parts of the text disappear or get mangled. 20200402_094034.jpg Moving on, I grab the window and move it a bit. The whole window is filled with a pattern, here is is just a color pattern. If the window gets repainted it looks OK until I move it again. The only way I found so far to fix it is to restart X, so logout then login, not nice. I am on fc30, fully up-to-date, using the onboard graphics of a 'Gigabyte Z390 UD' with a "Core i7-9700". How do I install Fedora 31 on LVM on LUKS configuration ?

The current Anaconda installer is unable to install Fedora to an encrypted partition. Is there anyway I can have one big encrypted partition, decrypt it, create a LVM and install Fedora. It seems I can't do that with the current Anaconda. If I have to use encryption and LVM what it does is first create the LVM and then encrypt the logical volumes that I specify. Burning dual layer Bluray discs

Well I just received the new LG burner because my ASUS was acting up (not ejecting properly and other issues). Also, I was NEVER able to burn dual layer Bluray discs with the ASUS even though it was supposed to. I tried everything, including REAL cdrecord (compiled myself), but the burn would always fail when switching layers. Since the drive had an issue and I had to spend some $$$, it was time to try again with the new LG WH14NS40. I first tried backing up my pictures (~40GB), with xfburn because I wanted to use libburn as the fork of the cdrecord apps are known to have issues. Not sure what the problem was but after spinning up a bunch of times it just crapped out with an unhelpful error. Next I tried Brasero, which also failed miserably. Finally I tried k3b which used mkisofs and it actually worked! Switched layers fine, finished, and verified. For posterity I specified a UDF based filesystem. Googling I see so little useful information about burning dual layer Bluray discs on Linux I figured I'd mention it here for anyone else interested. Thanks, Richard

Anyone have luck with Folding@Home and OpenCL on AMD RX580?

I recently setup Folding@Home on my Fedora 31 box and have it running on the CPU no problem but the package is not without issues... It installs a SysV init script which SystemD generates a service file from it, but fahclient runs as the fahclient user but AFAICT SystemD doesn't know that, which I've read can cause problems with accessing the GPU. So I went ahead and wrote a SystemD service file for fahclient, but no luck. I've also added fahclient to the video group, nope... I've installed the packages I think I need from AMD (which are really EL 8 packages) but they all install into /opt so my current theory is that FAH isn't finding the libraries... Current OpenCL error is: OpenCL: Not Detected: clGetDeviceIDs() returned -1 Anyone successfully got this working?

Anyways, for me that is about a typical weekly update, and I have updated my computer and rebooted about 200 times. I think I have reinstalled Rawhide now 2 or 3 times, but, I was tinkering around with something above my IQ, which is 79.9, on my best day. Is an encrypted Fedora Live CD possible?

Hi, I've managed to use the kickstart files to create a Fedora 31 KDE live CD without any problems. Actually I have a simple python script which conglomerates all the KS files together to make it easier to deal with. Then I customize it and have it copy some files into the /var/www/html directory. I am now trying to see what is necessary to have it encrypted (with Luks) so it prompts for the password at boot time. part /boot --size=512 --fstype=ext4 part / --encrypted --cipher=aes-xts-plain64 --size=8200 --fstype=ext4 Those commands don't seem to make it encrypted.. Is encryption ignored for the livecd? Am I not doing something correctly, or is this not possible? Thanks, Earl

System becomes unusable when copying a large file via USB into HDD

I have just installed the latest version of Fedora Gnome on my HP laptop. I had to import a 50 GB OVA file from my USB HDD to my hard drive via USB 3.0. When the copying was taking place through VirtualBox, the system hung almost completely, I was not able to even move my mouse. Why does this happen ? Reading this: https://askubuntu.com/q/397249/628460 It seems to be the case for Debian based OSes, but then why is it happening in Fedora ? I just formatted from Windows 10, and while I hate a lot of things about it, it never made the system unusable during heavy I/O operations. I had multiple tabs in Chrome open without any lag whatsoever. I say this, not to criticize Fedora but to point out this should be the case in modern OSes. So why am I facing this issue? Hi, I apologize for this OT question but I have just finished recording an hour-long masterpiece for my class. However, the volume appears to be really low. I don't know why this happened, but long story short, I really do not want to do this again, so I was wondering is there any software on Fedora 31 that will allow me to edit the mp4 to increase the volume. Yes I have rpmfusion repos but the driver has been installed from official NVIDIA site. The suggested tweaks to reencode every file sounds very annoying. Coming to the royalties thing, I have to admit I didn't know that. What is confusing me is: - with the nouveau drivers the problem did not exist. - vlc and smplayer are not playing even AVI files. hugo may be dropped from F32?

Hi, I have noticed that hugo is FTBS in Fedora 32 may be dropped? https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1799514 There are other bugs/RFEs also so it seems that it may be a maintainer who is no longer able to care for this RPM. Ranjan

Microphone problem.

When I want to use the built-in microphone of my laptop it is unavailable. I then manipulate pavucontrol to make it available which is OK but when I reboot it becomes unavailable again. NVIDIA Problem

Hi list, I've decided to switch from nouveau to Nvidia drivers. Everythings seems ok but I cannot play anymore h24 videos. Both VLC & SMPLAYER just play sounds but no video. this is the error message: Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) Before the switch everything were OK. I'm running Fedora 31 on an a laptop HP Pavilion dv5. Thanks in advance for any suggestion. Angelo
