F35/Xfce window focus problem
by Robert Moskowitz
F35 and Xfce on a Lenovo X140e
This is most noticeable in the one instantiation of Thunderbird that
opens messages in new windows rather than a new tab.
What happens is that this new window stays hidden. Sometimes all it
takes is pressing the Alt key and the focus changes to the opened
message. Sometimes I see just the outline of the new window befoer I
press the Alt key. Other times I have to do an Alt-tab. And sometimes
it works ok.
Also sometimes it seems keystrokes are ignored. I press Cntl-R to
respond to a message and nothing happens. I try again and then it
'takes'. When I go to unlock from screensaver, I type in my password, I
see all the **** appear, I press enter and nothing. I press enter again
and the system unlocks.
Other weirdness at times. I have not found any bug report like this and
am getting ready to submit one.
Any pointers?
thanks

Hundreds of These on Recent F35 Kernel Updates
by Tim Evans
Have noticed hundreds and hundreds of messages like this over the past
two or three F35 kernel updates (via dnf):
hardlink: cannot link
/usr/src/kernels/5.15.7-200.fc35.x86_64+debug/./net/mptcp/Kconfig to
/usr/src/kernels/5.15.5-200.fc35.x86_64+debug/./net/mptcp/Kconfig.hardlink-temporary:

hardlink: cannot link
/usr/src/kernels/5.15.8-200.fc35.x86_64/./net/mptcp/Makefile to
/usr/src/kernels/5.15.5-200.fc35.x86_64+debug/./net/mptcp/Makefile.hardlink-temporary:

System boots from new kernels with no apparent issues.
Thanks.

Setting up webserver for https??
by Michael D. Setzer II
I've run a web server on port 8081 for some time since
my ISP blocks ports 80 and 443 completely, and it has
worked fine.
Recently have noticed things in access_log that show
people are trying to connect to the port 8081 using
https?? Assume it is changes in browsers that want to do
https only.
Have just tried to use certbot to create a certificate, but it
seems to want to only support the connection to a web
server running on port 80 that does me no good and it
fails.. Any other options?
Nothing crital on site that needs https, but if browsers
are going to require it. Looking to run https on 8443 or
something? Sure someone else must have this issue?
Thanks for your time.

boot missing for kernel-5.15.6-200.fc35.x86)64
by bradbell@seanet.com
I have have installed
sudo dnf install kernel-5.15.6-200.fc35
and it completes without error.
The problem is that I do not see the new kernel as an option during system boot.
When I execute the command
ls /boot | grep '^vm'
I see
vmlinuz-5.14.10-300.fc35.x86_64
but I do not see an entry for kernel-5.16.6.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the new kernel, but that has not fixed the problem.
What should I do to get the option to boot the new kernel ?

Seeking advice - Considering move to Google Contacts or something
similar
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I recently was required to upgrade my current phone (Samsung S7) to a new
phone (Samsung S52) since the one I've had wasn't 5G compatible. The
service is T-Mobile.
I've relied on using MemoToo's cloud service to sync my addressbook and
calendar managed by Evolution on my primary computer, and then to sync my
phone's contacts from MemoToo.
MemoToo provided an app, and everything worked reliably on my S7 for
several years.
In porting to the A52, the MemoToo can be installed, the contacts and
addressbook can downloaded, but they are not visible to the A52 contacts
and calendar apps. Reviewing the MemoToo forums, this seems to be a
problem shared by many MemoToo users. The S7 is still on Android 8.x while
the A52 is uusing Android 11. This could be the source of the issue, or it
could be something else.
Requesting clarification from MemoToo as to whether this issue will be
addressed results in no response.
I've also approached the SyncEvolution community. There was some advice
and some alternative apps suggested, but so far, I haven't been able to
make anything work.
So, I'm looking for advice on how to proceed from the Fedora community.
- What services are available to sync to Evolution and then to the A52,
if at all?
- Or is syncing Evolution to Google Contacts and Calendar is
satisfactory?
-- if the latter, is there guidance on setting this up?
Much thanks,
Max Pyziur

lightdm - how to set profile picture
by Sam Varshavchik
I reinstalled the XFCE spin. Previously, the ancient, upgraded, Fedora
install originated as a default Gnome install. I switched to XFCE at some
point later.
lightdm used to show my profile picture on my login screen. I have a
distinct recollection of either something in settings, or from the panel
that opened a tool which prompted me to select a picture, interactively crop
it, and that became my profile picture. But I cannot find any readily
advertised tool to set my profile picture, after an XFCE spin install.
A few minutes spent in Google led me to /var/lib/AccountsService/users
Looking in there, I can see that I should be able to set my profile picture
by installing $HOME/.face
Is this actually the way to go, these days? There's nothing in settings that
invites a non-technical user to select their mug shot, for their profile
picture? They'd have to discover this via Google and command line?

batch
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
Using computer center facilities, I submit my job with the tool SGE.
Can I install the same tool under fedora?
Are there some alternatives to submit jobs running in batch?
Thanks.
