dvdformat a loopback device
by Bill Cunningham
IDK if you can do this or not. Say if you have a file that is 2.048 Gig
and it is attached to a loopback device, say /dev/loop0,
losetup /dev/loop0 FILE_NAME,
And you tried cdrwtool -d /dev/loop0 -q;
Now I have tried this and get errors. IDK if there's a way around this,
a safety issue that is built in, or maybe I am not using the right
program to format a "dvd".
Can you dvdformat a loopback device?

config.h
by Bill Cunningham
I am trying to find this config.h header in the dvdbackup source code.
It's my guess it's auto generated by the configure script or a Makefile.
I am wanting to gut as much of this as possible to work just for my
system. I am not a developer and I am not bothering them. I don't need
portability or __cplusplus defines. Most of the C code makes sense if I
can track it, but the preprocessor functions, no. I don't do
preprocessing, never looked into it.
This is some kind of universal standards someone has wisely put
into this code. But my idea is to gut as much as possible.

Fedora37: Fails to boot with NISDOMAIN=... in /etc/sysconfig/network
by Terry Barnaby
A strange one this. I was just updating a Fedora35 server to Fedora37,
using a full reinstall and then copying configuration files from the old
system.
The system failed to boot with lots of strange issues with systemd. It
started with console messages like:
[ TIME ] Timeout waiting for device dev-zram0.device - /dev/zram0.
Some further issues with zram, followed by some other services starting
fine then the system gets in a loop:
[ FAILED] Failed to start systemd-udevd.service - ...
[ FAILED] Failed to start systemd-oomd.service - ...
None of this was logged in /var/log/messages.
After some tracking down on a VM, I found the issue was somehow caused
by having "NISDOMAIN=kingnet" in the file /etc/sysconfig/network. This
came from an old client configuration ,setting the NIS domain. This was
not actually needed on the server and in fact not needed on the clients
now as the DHCP does this on our systems, it was a hangback from 20
years or so.
I have no idea why this has caused the boot fail though, I thought I'd
mention it in case anyone else sees it. I will report it as a "bug"
against systemd although I'm not sure it is really a systemd issue or
really a bug at all, but a bit nasty as the system fails to boot.

help needed: How to reset the root password
by Peter Boy
A Quick Doc article describes the procedure:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/reset-root-password/
We, the Fedora Docs team, are in the process to review and improve the Quick Docs articles. We are (unfortunately) not omniscient IT gods but need support from Fedora community.
According to some comments (https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/quick-docs/issue/524) the article misses at least some information:
- the second part about using live CD doesn’t describe Workstation and BTRFS
- for which Fedora variant do the instructions apply? Server for sure, Workstation? CoreOS? Silverblue? Kinoite? all spins?
- what else is missing, misleading, or misunderstandable?
Please, take a quick look at the article and give specific wording for completion and improvement by either
- reply here
- add comment to https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/quick-docs/issue/524
- edit a copy of the page using pagure editor (2nd icon from the right in the bread-crumb bar, use "fork & edit“)
Thanks for contributing

127.0.0.53 question
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I am use to seeing 127.0.0.1, but now I am seeing
things like 127.0.0.53.
This is used with my caching named server on
port 53.
So I figured that the last digit was the (local)
port.
So I tried CUPS: 127.0.0.631. No joy. CUPS
still wanted 127.0.0.1:631.
So what exactly is the last field in 127.0.0.xxx?
Yours in confusion,

Named keeps dying on me
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All.
FC37
bind-chroot-9.18.8-1.fc37.x86_64
I have a caching server configured.
This is becoming a real pain in the ...
Named can not be connected to after about
five minutes.
As of FC37 (no issue in FC36)
# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.53
options edns0 trust-ad
search .
And look what happens here:
$ host gbis.com
Host gbis.com not found: 2(SERVFAIL)
Then if I throw a:
$ host gbis.com 127.0.0.1
Using domain server:
Name: 127.0.0.1
Address: 127.0.0.1#53
Aliases:
gbis.com has address 54.151.57.48
gbis.com mail is handled by 0 gbis.com.
And now it starts working!!!!
$ host gbis.com
gbis.com has address 54.151.57.48
gbis.com mail is handled by 0 gbis.com.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!

Setting up a stable/secure test web server/webapp on a cloud server.
by bruce
Hi.
As a pure test, I'm thinking of putting together a test app on a cloud
server. I've seen a bunch of blogs/vids/etc.. But I'm concerned about
the security aspects of the test server.
So, are there any solid/serious best practices that the list can
recommend? In looking over Centos/Ubuntu, from what I've seen, most
things should be "similar"
My use case:
test webapp for users to access, fill out a test form
test app deals with mysql/email generation
server should have remote/ssh access
server should be monitored
server should have basic ddos (cloudflare) protection
webserver should have "test" ssl certs (for https)
server should be updatable -- how to do this in a reasonable manner/policy?
server -- data redundancy/recovery in case things go fubar
etc..
If you have skills in this area, and want to take this offline, that
would be great.
thanks!
my apologies if this is off-topic

Clearing DNS cache without rebooting
by Joe Zeff
Ever since last night, my desktop has been unable to resolve
slashdot.org, but other computers on my LAN can. I'm presuming that
there's something wrong with my DNS, so I'm trying to clear its cache,
but I can't find instructions on how to do this without rebooting.
Suggestions?

MuseScore 4.0
by Jerry James
MuseScore is music composition and notation software, currently
available from Fedora in the mscore package. Version 4.0 was just
released. If anybody would like to try it out, it is available from
this COPR: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/jjames/MuseScore4/.
I do not intend to build for Fedora until some issues have been worked
out.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
DO NOT TRY THIS IN A WAYLAND SESSION. It will run for anywhere from a
few seconds to a few minutes, then abruptly exit with a "Protocol
error". Run an X session to try MuseScore 4.0.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
Configuration for MuseScore 3.x and 4.x differs in some important
respects. You may have to do a "factory reset" when switching
versions. Run "mscore -R" or "mscore -F" if it won't start. This
will clear out your list of recently opened scores, for example, so
backup your configuration before you do this.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
To try it out, run:
sudo dnf copr enable jjames/MuseScore4
sudo dnf install musescore
Please try the video export option, which has bitrotted upstream. I
have attempted to update it for current ffmpeg. Please let me know if
it does or does not work for you. If it works well, I will submit my
patch upstream. Do this: "mscore --score-video <path_to_score> -o
filename.mp4", and optionally try the --resolution and --fps
arguments. Run "mscore --help" for more information. This
functionality does not seem to be available via the GUI.
Upstream bundles fluidsynth, apparently for the sole purpose of
implementing a caching soundfont loader that uses internal fluidsynth
APIs. I have unbundled fluidsynth for this repository, which means
there is no soundfont cache. If you switch soundfonts frequently,
please let me know if the performance is acceptable. If you are
familiar with the fluidsynth API and can implement a caching soundfont
loader using only public APIs, please do so and submit it upstream.
Several other products are bundled (beatroot-vamp, dtl, intervaltree,
rtf2html, and KDDockWidgets). Each of them has either been altered by
the MuseScore developers or, in the case of KDDockWidgets, internal
APIs are used so extensively that I cannot see how to unbundle
successfully. Thoughts on how any of these products might be
unbundled are welcome.
The COPR version makes a long-requested change: the package name
changes from mscore to musescore. Let me know if you encounter any
problems arising from that change.
A new font package is needed to build version 4.0 for Fedora. I would
appreciate a review from anybody who feels competent to review a font
package: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2152347. There
is a question about the appropriate foundry name. If you can help
answer that question, please chime in.
Regards,
