icon theme cleanup?

dnf update just took about 20 minutes at 100% cpu to get past the cleanup step in breeze-icon-theme, made it past a few more things rapidly, now is using 100% cpu in cleanup of oxygen-icon-theme. What on earth is it doing? I guess my system will be really really clean if it ever gets done :-).

ssd keeps dying (OT)

I know this is a bit OT, but you guys are great at answering all questions. I bought a workstation from Titan computers around 1/2020 (dual EPYC cpu). After about 1 year it stopped working. I could ssh to it, and almost any command would return Input/Output error. Unfortunately journalctl gave input/output error so I can't see logs. cat /proc/partitions did not show any nvme device (the root device) on which the OS was installed. I replaced the SSD with a samsung 980 pro. Reinstalled fedora. It then worked a few weeks, then the exact same symptoms. I replaced the SSD with another samsung 980 pro, this time with heatsink. Reinstalled fedora. It worked a few weeks. Then same symptoms. Then I replaced with a 4th samsung 980 pro, but this time instead of using the M.2 socket I used a pcie-m.2 adapter (in case something was wrong with the m.2 socket). Also added a surge protector outlet for good measure. Reinstalled. Watched the smartctl. No errors. Temperature was always low. Now it's failed again, exactly same symptoms. Any ideas? Thanks, Neal

No, venv won't give you any additional security if a python module has malicious code. If you don't fully trust a python module but you want to run it anyway, consider building a container image. You can install the required python modules in the image, and then run them the container mostly isolated from the rest of your system. If it needs data files (and I expect that it does), then you can mount a single directory as a volume in the container so that the python modules have access to those files but nothing else on your system. Or, if you don't trust the isolation of containers, then use a virtual machine.

iptables-restore-translate

Bonjour, I would like to move from iptables to nftables which seeems to be the nowadays firewall and there were an app to translate iptables rules into nftables rules, but some (clever) packager seems to have withdraw this command from the iptables-compat package which installed on my f34 install. I tried to uninstall this iptables-compat (succeeded) and to install the iptables-1.8.7-3.fc34.x86_64 package but failed for some obscure reasons... Is there a way to have this translator available somewhere? dns lookup behavior

Folks, I have 3 Linux systems, one running F31 and 2 running F34. On one of the F34 systems I have a local DNS server running. This has worked fine in the past, but now I'm seeing strangeness on the 2 F34 systems. I added a host to the DNS server for normal lookup and reverse lookup. On the F31 system both: host centos8-opstcore-vm.homenet172-16-96.com and host 172.16.96.20 work. The first returns 172.16.96.20 and the second returns centos8-opstcore-vm.homenet172-16-96.com. On the F34 which is the DNS server the first works, but the second fails with: Host 20.96.16.172.in-addr.arpa. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) On the other F34 system I get: host 172.16.96.20 ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached The interface has the DNS server pointing to the correct system. If I run: nslookup > server 192.168.10.66 Default server: 192.168.10.66 Address: 192.168.10.66#53 > 172.16.96.20 20.96.16.172.in-addr.arpa name = centos8-opstcore-vm.homenet172-16-96.com. > Then it works. Perl is now failing for me

I'm not sure when it started, but on everything more complicated than print 'Hello World' my perl is failing. For example: $ perl -e 'use DateTime;' Attempt to reload List/Util.pm aborted.
