[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

Apache and umask for document root

Hi, I've set up a virtual host for a joomla website and having some permissions problems. I've seen numerous configurations online about how to set umask for the apache user, but none have worked, including creating a systemd file (/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/httpd.service) with the following: [Unit] Description=The Apache HTTP Server After=network.target remote-fs.target nss-lookup.target [Service] Type=notify Environment=LANG=C Umask=0006 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecReload=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k graceful # Send SIGWINCH for graceful stop KillSignal=SIGWINCH KillMode=mixed PrivateTmp=true [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target The problem is that the files are owned by the joomla user, but also need to have access (both read and write) to be able to modify some files within the document root. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set umask for the apache user? I'm also interested in recommended permissions settings for the joomla document root. Thanks, Alex

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Previously init systems had user console lost to the user. There was some attempt to capture the X logs and the gnome session, but in systemd each user unit can be individually examined with journalctl. This is just stuff off the top of my head. While I do agree that there has been a lot of focus on server with systemd, a lot of cool things (like unit templating) were introduced because of systemd on workstations. Don’t forget that nearly all the common benefits of systemd also help desktops, because at its core, it’s the core init system to launch the OS. -- Jonathan Billings

Connecting to printer on Windows 10 System

I have a HP Envy 5530 printer on usb connection to a Windows 10 system. KDE printer settings seems to find it with a smb URI. smb:///%2F192.168.1.100%2FHPENVY5530 Keeps asking for a user and password but doesn't accept local users or users on the remote machine. An attempt to print a test page fails with a CIFS unable to connect error NT_STATUS_NOT_FOUND. The setting window is not responsive to any mouse clicks. Other windows systems print with no problems What am I missing on getting access?

Can new Fedora changes help users ?

I read this article https://www.theregister.com/2022/04/27/fedora_starts_to_simplify_linux/. The question is whether we can still use old laptops. I have an HP 6710b and it works very well at the moment with Fedora 36. In this case, my opinion is that the development team will release a special Fedora Spin for laptops with old hardware. What do you think?

Well, merged into kernel some weeks before likely means that it will be a few weeks before the kernel.org with it is released, and it will take weeks to month or more after that before fedora updates has that kernel. And merged into the kernel also means that there are almost certainly still going to be some sorts of bugs for a while. And the management of access times and such means that you would have likely written to the metadata (if you read any files) if the implementation handles updating access times. And there are now articles saying that code that was merged into the kernel has a bunch of patches waiting to be accepted, and the maintainer has not responded to any of those requests and that new NTFS code is suspected to have immediately been orphaned by the company that asked for it to be merged and agreed to help support it. The articles indicate the linux kernel is working though what is going on with the maintainer. systemctl, start a --user service from a root script

Hey all, I'm trying to execute a user systemd function from /etc/rc.local: 755, root.root. My thought is to use su. Is there a better way? This is where I'm at now. su --login mike --command=systemctl --user start <some service> Anybody know how to accomplish this? I personally know about 100 ways to do it wrong ;D TIA Mike Wright

Not Able To Use External Monitor with Laptop

Hi, all, I'm having an odd problem. On two of my laptops, on which I've just done fresh installs, I cannot get the external monitor to work. Using either the XFCE display configuration tool, it shows up, but it's marked as 'disabled'. I do not seem to have the usual such tool under KDE, which is one of my puzzles. The install was done the same way in both cases, and somewhat non-standardly, so I'm guessing I might be missing some package(s). I've had trouble using KDE with Wayland, so I installed the XFCE spin, then installed KDE via dnf, so Wayland does not get loaded, and is not even installed. Graphics processor on this machine is AMD Renoir. It's a System 76 Pangolin. Riki

And if you hibernate the machine(any os) and remove the usb device while hibernated the filesystem may not be consistent, it has to be explicitly unmounted on both windows and fedora before removal so that all data is fully written. In the past it was suggested to not use NTFS as a transfer drive and to use something simpler like FAT32 as that fs's format is better documented and simpler than NTFS. That may or may not still be the case.

Cinnamon: tranferring ALT to virt-manager

Hi, I have a kvm instance running win10 and need to use the ALT-click key within the instance. However, it seems Cinnamon is intercepting that keypress when accessing the instance using virt-manager. It works fine with virt-manager and GNOME, just not with virt-manager and Cinnamon. virt-manager isn't my favorite, but I've also tried tigervnc some time ago and it also has the same problem. Is there a virt-manager config options I need to select in order to pass the ALT + left mouse key through to the instance? It's currently just set up as a PS2 mouse. ssh infested by systemd.resolved

The latest systemd update broke ssh. Specifically, "ssh hostname", where hostname was not a FQDN no longer worked, and I had to use "ssh hostname.domain", for my LAN. Of course, /etc/resolv.conf was pointing to systemd's resolver, and features: search . this was despite my DHCP server offering the LAN's domain name properly. I don't remember if I fixed this laptop previously, or it was using systemd's resolver for a while. I just symlinked /etc/resolv.conf to /run/NetworkManager/no-stub-resolv.conf, which had the correct DNS search string, as always. This seemed to have fixed DNS lookups, per se: $ host jack jack.email-scan.com has address 192.168.0.6 But ssh was still broken, and failing. An strace of ssh revealed that it still insists on talking to systemd. connect(3, {sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/run/systemd/resolve/io.systemd.Resolve"}, 42) = 0 sendto(3, "{\"method\":\"io.systemd.Resolve.ResolveHostname\",\"parameters\": {\"name\":\"jack\",\"flags\":0}}\0", 87, MSG_DONTWAIT|MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 87 mmap(NULL, 135168, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f103ff5c000 I don't see where it's picking this up. The only thing I can think of is nsswitch.conf, but the "hosts" entry there is identical to what's on another, un-upgraded system. I don't see where it's picking this up. hi all, i am trying to fathom what hung me out to dry trying to evaluate resolution options for my F34/hdtv. entering display settings, looking at the list of possible resolutions, there are several. *many of those options, if selected yields 'invalid format' !* *what is this telling me?! Since there’s only one user systemd per user, you can launch a process that can be used and managed by both the graphical login and a ssh session. (This is actually annoying to me, since it means stuff like Kerberos and AFS works differently than it used to.). Because it is like regular systemd, you can override services in your ~/.config/systemd/user directory, set resource limits, such as only giving gnome-tracker 0.1% of the CPU and lower priority and lower IO bandwidth. 4.) the desktop session output and error are captured in the journal. Previously init systems had user console lost to the user. There was some attempt to capture the X logs and the gnome session, but in systemd each user unit can be individually examined with journalctl. 5.) desktop environments can have a unified interface for autostart of processes in a new session. This is just stuff off the top of my head. While I do agree that there has been a lot of focus on server with systemd, a lot of cool things (like unit templating) were introduced because of the needs in systemd on workstations. Don’t forget that nearly all the common benefits of systemd also help desktops, because at its core, systemd is the core init system to launch the OS. I noticed that the recent update had dhcpd in it. For no particular reason I decided to do a minor health check and see what it was doing. I was surprised to see that dhcpd was listening on some random high port in addition to its usual dhcp port. But this thing is open to the whole wide world. Some searching around found that people noticed this ten years ago, and it's something dynamic dns-related. There was no configuration option to turn it off when people were talking about it. There was only a compile-time option. I combed through the man page. "ddns-updates off" sounded like a promising candidate, I put it into dhcpd.conf, restarted dhcpd, and I don't see dhcpd listening on some high port anymore. This doesn't really matter for Fedora, firewalld will block this. But it's awesome how this is enabled by default, and it's listening on all IP addresses, and not just the DHCP subnet.

Fedora trashes my NTFS drive

Hi, I have a NTFS flashdrive. When I plug it into Fedora, it reads and writes normally. However, when plugged into M$ Windows, only an icon and a not-so-informative ``Removable media'' is shown. When I try to reformat it with Windows Disk Management, another not-so-informative error ``Windows cannot format the given drive'' is shown. I then filled it with zeroes with a Chinese partition management program (AoMei, if that is useful) and recreated NTFS on it. It worked on Windows. However, after a plug into Fedora it was ruined again: Fedora recognized it, but Windows did not. Results of `sudo fsck /dev/sdc1': ------------------------------------- fsck from util-linux 2.37.4 Unsupported: replay_log() Unsupported: check_volume() Checking 256 MFT records. Unsupported cases found. ntfsck was unable to run properly. ------------------------------------- So I ran `ntfsfix` on it and the following output was produced: -------------------------------------------------------- Mounting volume... OK Processing of $MFT and $MFTMirr completed successfully. Checking the alternate boot sector... OK NTFS volume version is 3.1. Noticed a number of lines in the message log that repeat this? Seems it is linked to the installation from a livesys flash? Hi guys. I wonder how many use mesa_glthread=true (https://www.gamingonlinux.com/wiki/Performance_impact_of_Mesa_glthread) and see any effects of it on web browsers. I cannot say it's 100% that var but web browsers - and I run quite few different ones concurrently - on my laptop hard crush often. In other words effect of it I think is negative on web browsers and I wonder if anybody did bit more playing with that. many thanks, L.

fsck required?

I have a laptop that's been unused for about two months. Today I started it up and commenced a software update via Gnome Software. It downloaded everything fine and I rebooted the laptop. The harddisk is encrypted and after I entered the password for decryption it dropped into emergency mode. Now I was a bit distracted and doing other things at the same time so I don't actually remember if the software update was done or if it was about to start. Anyway so I have a laptop that only boots to emergency shell. There journalctl says that fsck failed with exit status 4 for /dev/mapper/fedora-root If I run fsck I only get back 'fsck from util-linux 2.37.4' Any advice how to rescue this laptop would be appreciated.

Upgraded system from regular SATA disk to SDD disk. Anything need to get best?

I had a Fedora 34 machine with a regular 1TB hard disk. Imaged it to a 1TB SDD disk and then removed regular disk. Did a reinstall of the kernel files, since wasn't sure if perhaps something would be modified. Suspend frequent failure - F35 with Xfce on Lenovo x140e

Frequently, in the past few months, Suspend is failing. Video goes off, but fan keeps running and system state LED stays solid rather than blink (normal behavior in suspend). I have to hold down the power button until the system turns off and restart the system and restart all that I had running. And at times Suspend works just fine. The latest failure was this morning. Mostly when I get this, I can restart, then after all the apps auto reopen, I can then suspend. But not this time. It failed again. I had to cycle again, but this time I quit from Firefox, with all its open tasks, and things worked. Why does Evolution source registry periodically search Secret Service?

Hello, I have KeePassXC set up as the Secret Service provider on my system. I have it configured to prompt me for the database password if a program tries to search Secret Service while the database is locked, and I've noticed that I occasionally get prompted for the password while not doing anything that should require Secret Service. I found this line in the logs that seems to indicate that a service called evolution-source-registry attempted to search Secret Service: Apr 15 19:43:15 fedora evolution-sourc[2546]: secret_monitor_scan_secrets_thread: Timeout was reached Is there a way to disable this? I have no GNOME Online Accounts set up. I tried stopping this service but that breaks GNOME Calendar. Best regards, Alexander Zhang

I have a desktop pc where fedora can no longer find any output devices. This started last week. I can no longer get any sound through the speakers, bluettoth, or headphones. I am running Fedora 34 with 64gb memory. the cpu is amd ryzen 7 2700x. this ts the result of lspci -k 0a:00.3 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 17h (Models 00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device a182 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel It looks like the kernel module is wrong. SELinux prevents systemctl hibernate

Hello, I'm trying to enable hibernation to a swap file on Fedora 35. I've created a swapfile on a new BTRFS subvolume, added the resume dracut module, and set the kernel command line arguments. I've also added SYSTEMD_BYPASS_HIBERNATION_MEMORY_CHECK=1 to the environments of systemd-hibernate and systemd-logind since the swap size check is apparently incorrect for some reason. Currently, hibernating with echo platform > /sys/power/disk and echo disk > /sys/power/state works, but doing systemctl hibernate only locks and briefly turns off the screen. systemd timers and amavis quarantine

Hi, There used to be a timer similar to something like amavis-quarantine-clean.timer that periodically would remove old files from /var/spool/amavisd/quarantine, but it's nowhere on the system on fedora35, yet the system is somehow deleting files older than 30 days from the quarantine still. Where do I look? HP laptop and wifi on Fedora 35 fix wifi adapter.

After the upgrade with F35, I got some errors on wifi. Now I saw the adapter is not shown but is listed on hardware. If I press the wifi button then start the airplane mode and is set to on. Incompatibility between webcam and drawing tablet

OT: laptop SSD(?) makes screeching sounds

This is clearly OT, even though I am a loyal user of Fedora since Fedora Core 1, but I thought someone here may have some ideas. Anyway, I have a Dell XPS 13 (9370) circa 2018 and since this afternoon it has been making screeching sounds, sort of like it is screeching to a new place, then screeching back, and so on. It has a SSD (400-AVHW) so what could it be? I thought that it may be the battery overheating (because it was bulging too) causing the fan to whir on, so we removed it (and ordered a new one) but the screeching sound is still on. I am not sure what sort of additional information may be helpful, but am happy to provide. Thanks very much in advance for any pointers! Best wishes, Ranjan
