From what I understood, the change to openssh listed in: rpm -q --changelog openssh |less as: "* Wed Jun 20 2007 Tomas Mraz <tmraz(a)redhat.com> - 4.5p1-7 - experimental NSS keys support - correctly setup context when empty level requested (#234951) " was supposed to allow the Common Access Card (CAC) to work with the shipped Fedora 8 ssh. This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

mailman on Fedora

What's the deal with maintaining mailing lists on Fedora these days? For years I've used mailman (first mailman2, now mailman3) on Fedora to administer mailing lists. In mailman3, you also need postorius to provide a web interface to users and hyperkitty to provide mail archive support. On Fedora 35, mailman2 isn't available anymore, so that's when I switched to mailman3. The original Fedora 35 did not have postorius, but that became available later. Hyperkitty on the other hand is not available on fedora 35. I use an rpm that I built myself. On Fedora 36, mailman3 can be installed, but both postorius and hyperkitty (there it is in the repository) cannot. They both depend on a too old version of django. On Fedora 37 (I know, not released yet, so any complaints should go to the testing list) none of the packages can be installed since they all depend on python 3.10 and F37 will come with 3.11. The packages are actually the unmodified F36 packages. Do people use mailman3 on Fedora? If so, how? Should I invest time in getting it to work in a python virtual environment? And how would that work with SELinux? This very mailing list (users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org) is managed with mailman3, but does the system on which it runs run Fedora? -- Sjoerd Mullender

Fedora on a Mac Book Pro

I've come across a circa 2011 Mac Book Pro. It appears to be in decent condition save for the power adapter which appears to have been chewed by a pet, so it doesn't flame on. Has anyone had success installing fedora on one of these? Just curious before I put money into a power adapter, I'm guessing someone ran the battery flat (its probably shot anyway) and didn't pursue getting a new power adapter. Thanks, Terry

This will be really programmers adventure. And it will not be so simple like building Tuner Internet radio. So I would like to plea for help The most advancet packagers or builders from this community. Because Shortwave support live Internet radio stream recording, it would be more than useful to have The opportunity to build it also for AArch64 architecture with no need to use flatpak or similar repositoryes, which allready contain this Internet radio multipurposing app. I must warn you, tthat building will be really big adventure for The most elite builders or packages among us. I will write The build proggress in this thread and I will be patiently asking for help, if some error will appear, which will get building in stuck. I Am hoping, that somebody among us will success in this informatic science adventure with Me. Sure, I will not be passive. I will do my best to build myself. Dear advanced users and developers, Because Redhad elite programmers allow users to run their chroot Fedora containers for AArch64 architecture, I Am using Fedora 35 on Termux with Android 8.0. For obvious reason, all kernel related Fedora packages are redundand for Me in this scenario. I would like to know, if is it possible to exclude all kernel related Fedora packages when installing new packages or when upgrading The systém by typing Dnf upgrade –refresh When I upgrade kernel reated packages for more than for The first time, Proot, special C app which simulates real Linux file systém hiearchi on Android crash. Or unfortunately, Dnf and also Yum do not allow users to skip or exclude kernel related packages? Thank you very much for your answer.

help me with tuner radio building process

Dear users and developers, My name is Janusz Chmiel. I Am visually impaired advanced Linux user with no sight at all. I Am currently using Fedora version 36 on X64 CPu architecture. I have issues with running Tuner radio app available on Flatpak. It randomly causes severe kernel crash so kernel must auto recover from crash state automatically. The crash randomly occur if I Am typing The station name fast to The editable field inside Tuner radio GUI. I Am sure, that this crash will never occur if I will compile and build Tuner radio myself and I will not depend on Flatpak repository. App is very accessible and it allow fast Internet radios searching and playing. GUi is much more simple than while using Shortwave. Shortwave is also available on Flatpak. I need to find several components and I can not simply find them by using dnf and default set Fedora repositoryes. Here are packages list and those packages can be find on Ubuntu or Debian distributions. Please who of us know how to find repositoryes with all required components for Fedora? how to totally turn off lightning diods on internal notebook keyboard

Dear users, Please, does somebody of us know, if there is any chance to totally turn off lightning diodes, which are producing light on internal notebook keyboard? Because at night, diodes are always automatically turned on even if I enable dim functionality on Mate power manager. At day, diodes are not producing light at all except signal diodes for Capslock. Or unfortunately, I must accept this feature as is, because it is even impossible to turn it totally off even by using UEFI setup? I AM afraid that some diodes could burn by this feature and I Am afraid that my notebook can stop to be operable at all if those diodes will be burnet out. My microwave owen has stopped to work totally when lightning diode have been burned out. Internal insurance have been burned out and microwave owen have been unusable, no function at all. And I Am afraid, that The same issue can occur if lightning diode on keyboard will be burned out. Thank you very much for your answer.

Some programmers has done their best to fix all sound issues which were typical for some integrated sound chips on laptops. So now. Skype perfectly work with The microphone even if user uses wired headset connected to The input output one connector in this audio subsystem. Previously it have been necessary to shut down The laptop, connect analog wired headset with The microphone or even ordinary analog head phones to The connector and start Fedora or also other Linux distributions. If user have connected The device to The connector when The system have been allready booted, sound output have not been directed to The device. Only build in amplifier has worked. Now, it is allready The past. I must compare this new feature with Ubuntu. If Ubuntu still lack this feature, Redhad elite developers were The first one, who has solved this sound rebus. Very well done. Unfortunately, sound quality while making Skype calls related to microphone controll can not be compared with Android or with Windows. But it is problem of non standardized Linux distros and various versions of Pulseaudio and kernel device drivers. May be, that once a pone time, also microphone support in Skype will be solved. It would be necessary to enable 20 DB auto boost and suppress The possible back feetback if hardware do not automatically eliminate it.

No sound after update

Today I updated the software on my Fedora 36 and now there is no sound. I used Gnome Software to update. Neither VLC nor Firefox produces sound. In Settings -> Sound -> Output there are two values under Output Device, both saying HDMI/DisplayPort - Built-in Audio. No difference between them, when using the Test functionality both stay silent. Any advice?

ed2k-ovmf missing "4M version"

It seems that Win10 guest VMs are now choking after Microsoft did …something to reject the current OVMF firmware. This entire discussion, pretty much, is way over my head: https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/discussions/3221 As best as I can make things out: There is an alternative OVMF firware called "4M" firmware that works. The edk2-ovmf package contains files named OVMF_CODE.secboot.fd and OVMF_VARS.secboot.fd which are blacklisted by Microsoft. Debian and other distributions apparently ship "OVMF_CODE_4M" and "OVMF_VARS_4M" firmware which is still good. People have reported success extracting those images and repointing their qemu VM configuration to them. I don't grasp the underlying issue well enough to be able to file something intelligent in Bugzilla, in order to update Fedora packaging. I'm hoping that someone else here has enough domain knowledge to create a bug that points the ed2k packagers in the right direction. I tried looking at the SRPM, and I did not see anything in there that I could understand.

My dream is, that those wired headsets with buttons on The microphne could be used as A alternate media controlling system on Mate desktop environment. But I do not know, if Alsa, Pulseaudio and The similar sound subsystems support this technology. Or if it is impossible to implement at all? I know, that The majority of users are using bluetooth devices. But wired headsets have also its advantages. Sure, if kernel device drivers would had to be reprogrammed from scratch, I Am aware, that nobody will invest such plenty of time to support wired headsets and their media controlling integrated buttons. Mate can not grab such media keys as A keyboard code, so I can not simply assign those media codes myself. I Am very sorry for this non standard question. Fedora 35, not fully up-to-date I run a SiliconDust tuner that converts OTA TV to mp2, which I'm then able to play back using mplayer. An hard-wired ethernet connection is used between the tuner and the main CPU. I notice that there are leftover kworker processes. They are mostly idle and only a few have non-zero time, and then at most only a couple of seconds. For example, 87547 ? I 0:00 [kworker/u16:1-phy0] 87554 ? I 0:00 [kworker/7:2-events] 87555 ? I have recently started using the ethernet instead of wifi. I have not disabled the wifi, but I leave the ethernet cable inserted. Recently, I noticed that I was unable to start the computer. I thought it was a faulty F37 testing kernel, so I tried the previous kernel. Same thing. For some reason, I thought the only thing different is that I now have the ethernet hooked up, so I pulled the plug and tried to boot. Everything went fine. How come I cannot boot the computer with the ethernet cable plugged in?

Yes, It is time to express some positive attitude to very professionally developed Anaconda installer. Why do I have such need to publicly express my feelings? The reason is, that I have never found so professionally created Linux system installer. What do I like best on The Anaconda installer? User do not have to be afraid, that GRUB boot loader will be accidentally put to his internal harddisk if user want to install Fedora to some available USB bootable arbitrary media such as flash disks or SD carts. Next reason is, that Anaconda is The only one Linux operating system installer which really care about professionaly configured FLinux installation if user choose USB bootable media. As A result, file system is correctly closed if user shut down system booted from USB bootable media. No file system corruption. No. Realy, file system is correctly closed and I can safely turn on and off again and again even if I install in such non standard botable device such as SSD cart. Because I do not see at all, I have "fallen in love with" excellent app named Lios. It is complex app writeen in Python and it uses GTK 3 toolkit to create its GUI. Unfortunately, on Fedora 35, 36, some dependent Python component was changed. As A result, when ever user want to access The settings dialog, which is necessary, app hang. No errors are printed to The terminal related to Python language errors. So I Am having big plea to Python developers here. Would you be so kind and would you try to debug and find The cause of this problem please? Dear advanced users and programmers in this excellent mailing list, I have The following polite plea addressed to you. I want to use Fedora 36 with The Mate desktop environment, Orca screen reader and Espeak on my ANdroid 8.0 phone. I must relay on non rooted device, because it is possible to use Fedora thanks to Termux and Proot package for Termux. But I do not know, if I can start some services which are not developed to interacting with Fedora Linux kernel or hardware. I can not use officially supported command systemctl for this task. Is it possible to safely start or stop userspace based services which do not communicate with hardware or with Fedora Linux kernel in chroot? Or unfortunately, I must receive sad reality, that I can not control services at all in chroot mode? Thanks to VNC protocol, Tigervnc and Orca and Pulseaudio for Termux, it is really possible to run Mate desktop environment including Marco window manager. Sure, some apps which depend on consolekit daemon will display warnings, but those warnings are not visible on X11 session screen. Sure, there are massive limitations because of up to date Firefox, Seamonkey or Chromium. those browses are using shared memory very intensively and it is no more possible to run them by using Proot and Termux on Android. But fortunately, not all apps are so depend on shared memory calls. As a result, it is possible to run even Pidgin, Libre office apps and many many others including Audacity for playing or editing sound data. Not for recording. I know, that professional developers do not like such approach. Because it is always big security risk to combine Android kernel with userspace chrooted container. But because I do not want to work for big professional company and I Am only running Fedora for my personal pleasure, I Am hoping, that elite programmers will forgive Me this approach. After I have upgraded from Fedora 35 to 36 by using The following commands. |sudo dnf upgrade --refresh| |sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=36 ||--allowerasing| |sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot |Upgrade process have been finished successfully with no hangs or errors. I have installed skype .rpm package from The official Microsoft WEB pages. Because Audacity also do not record sound at all from internal microphone by default and it have always worked before. It has 100 % worked reliably on Fedora 35. Unfortunately, Pulseaudio volume control app do not allow me to increase Thew mic volume by using cursor keys. When I position on The recording TAB, I can only hear combo box with several sub system names including monitoring build in analog stereo When I Am speaking waves are being changed, because The graphical symbols on The display are created by using The progress bar so Orca scren reader play random sound because The Progress bar percentage indicators are changing. But how to setup The build in microphone? May be, that The package installation of VMK virtual midi kpiano has installed some sound modules which has caused The issue. I've run this little script from time to time in / find . -xtype l >/badlinks 2>ERR grep -v '/proc\|/run' </badlinks >/badlinks-clean At present ends up with other 300 lines in the badlinks-clean Cleaned up a number of bad lines in a jre directory that seemed to be left over stuff from fc27 to fc33? Nothing from fc34?? and the reset were the currect fc35 files I have on system. Seems things that just got left?? Not sure if it is coming to have these on a system? Wonder if someone with a lot more knowledge than I have might know best option. Just leave them, remove some, remove all? Figured the ones in /proc and /run should be left alone?? Hi! Does anyone know why linux-firmware depends on intel-gpu and nvidia-gpu? and if this can be bypassed? I have an amd only desktop and is kind of annoying that i need also intel and nvidia firmware.. I imagine that the reason is to allow the os to run on whatever hardware is present or changed, but is there a way to allow user to customize somehow the presence of unneeded firmware? Thanks a lot! Noto fonts - ugly and unreadable for everyone or just me?

So I upgraded from Fedora 35-ish to 37 recently, and the most obvious thing is the change to Google Noto fonts (https://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/DefaultToNotoFonts) Wow oh wow, are these fonts ugly and unreadable for everyone or is it just a peculiarity of my system or of the upgrade process? I have mostly been able to switch applications back to DejaVu fonts, but I still can't work out how to get XFCE and Firefox to restore readable fonts for the window decorations, menus and URL bar. FYI: Microsoft broke secureboot in qemu-based VMs

It is possible to run qemu VMs that emulate EFI and secureboot well enough for Windows to boot. This is still true, technically. Windows will boot. But it will not update reliably anymore. Microsoft broke it, ostensibly for "security reasons". Microsoft released a Windows update that will not install on qemu EFI VMs: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/windows-kb5012170-secure-boo… dbx-update-may-fail-with-0x800f0922-error/ I was scratching my head, trying to figure out why this update won't install. A search on the cryptic error code brought up some random crap that wasted a ton of my time, doing things like resizing my system partition, almost bricking my VM (typical MS-Windows noise). Only after I got the bright idea of searching for both the error code and the update code itself did I find this article, and digging further found this: https://github.com/tianocore/edk2/discussions/3221 There's still a lot of things I don't understand. What is being blacklisted, exactly, here. The OVMF RPM – to the best of my understanding – is emulated hardware. How does running some PowerShell voodoo end up updating (emulated) hardware? And if it's not a magical hardware update, yammers about an update to the bootloader on the EFI system partition. Except that (at least in my case), the bootloader should be Microsoft's own bootloader, since I used Micorosoft's own tools to convert my BIOS Windows VM to an EFI one (mbr2gpt, that's how I was able to get a working EFI Windows VM). But the bottom line: this is now broken. Just an FYI…

backup tips: dump/restore

Hello all, Some time back I asked for opinions on backups. I had a lot of good opinions. I tried to backup some directories with dump. Which seemed to me to be quick and for what I was altogether looking for, for ext 2/3, pretty good. A 16GB filesystem was copied to a level 0 dump at around 1.5 GB. So it seems. I have several favorites, but in regards to dump, for those that are familiar with it; I did a level 0 dump and before I try restoring an erased partition I though I would clean up a few questions. As far at the partition's bootsector, would that happen to be in the dump file? And I am pretty sure partition table entries or any of the MBR are not saved. Timestamps and uuid type data of course I would not see to be saved. Although on my fstab, I use simple /dev/sdXX entries (/dev/sda1) not uuids. device.map might have to be regenerated too to get a booting system. I did not leave out anything system wise specifically by cli options. /var, /sys, /run, /tmp, /proc I am assuming are in the level 0 dump. The switches I used were: dump -0uv -e {some inode directory entries, not system specific} -f dmp Any tips on what I should save or expect to need to change when restoring this? BC

i have been using lists.fedoraproject.org. for support F20 -> F34 My platform environment is a small home system. i just read about Fedora 36/silverblue (immutable) & my inclination is to install silverblue, add flatpak's, and move on to verify F36 silverblue i also have a list of necessary application files for F36, that I need to verify before I move on. these include: Firefox including F36 OS +utils bash shell +(.XXX) OSB->studio pipewire audio http/https certbot ffmpeg image view files perl zoom My questions include; is anyone on this list using the silver blue desktop app? If yes, then... how easy is it to recover to an earlier version backup/reinstall user files how stable are the bind & activity logs how stable is Fedora 36 (silverblue) ?? would you recommend a migration to F36 silverblue now or wait for awhile?? tia, jackc...

email tracking, is it possible in fedora mail clients?

Hi, I just saw this article via Pocket in firefox, https://www.vox.com/recode/23332959/email-tracking-privacy and I wondered if that is an issue in fedora. It seems that in order for such tracking to work, it has to have the cooperation of the operating system, or at least the mail client. And, I would think that open source mail clients don't allow that. Am I right?

Fedora 36: How do I tell sound to NEVER use a mic?

I have two mics, one on my Brio web camera, and one on my motherboard. Every time I boot up, the Brio mic is selected, and I have to manually go in and tell the audio mixer that I want the onboard mic to be used. Sometimes I forget, join a WebEx or similar, and they are hearing me through my Brio, and that mic SUCKS compared to the one I have plugged in to the onboard sound card. I've set the onboard mic to be the default more times than I can remember, but when it reboots, the Brio mic is selected again. This is driving me nuts! What on Earth do I need to do to make the onboard sound card mic be the main/only one used? I am using Xfce, if that matters. When I fire up the mixer, it's using pavucontrol. If it matters, I have upgraded this system from F33 through F36. Thanks! Thomas

virt-manager alt-click passthrough?

Hi, I'm using virt-manager to connect to a Windows 10 virtual machine, where I'm using photoshop. I need to send an alt-click key for some functions, but virt-manager is instead interpreting them. It isn't among the pre-configured options that can be sent. Is there a way to remap the alt key or alt-click combination so I can send it through to the virtual machine? I've also tried the RealVNC client/server trial, and I can't get that to connect at all. It does appear qemu/realvnc server is listening on 5900: tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5900 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - qemu is also configured to listen (-spice port=5900,addr=127.0.0.1). I've also verified I can connect to port 5900 manually, so a Windows firewall is not the problem. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
