Cups shared print now showing in Windows
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 38
cups-2.4.7-1.fc38.x86_64
cups-lpd-2.4.7-1.fc38.x86_64
My old printer broke, so I had to replace it.
I removed the old printer from cups and added the
new printer. I set the new printer to network
share (and it does over LPD).
/etc/printcap:
# This file was automatically generated by cupsd(8) from the
# /etc/cups/printers.conf file. All changes to this file
# will be lost.
HLL2300D|HLL2300D:rm=server.acme.local:rp=HLL2300D:
Cups-PDF|Cups-PDF:rm=server.acme.local:rp=Cups-PDF:
"Cups-PDF" shows in the Windows 10 "add printer" dialog,
but my new HLL2300D does not.
I have cups-lpd installed, so I just did a manual create
port lpd and my new printer works fine from Windows 10.
But, why can Windows 10's "Add Printer" dialog find it?

output device changes with pipewire-0.3.83-2
by Frank Elsner
Hello,
has anyone other than me observed the effect that during audio playback to an audio interface the destination device changes to the "build-in audio device." This happens to me occasionally with pipewire-0.3.83-2.fc38.x86_64 and my ZOOM H6 audio interface.
Any hint to avoid this welcome.

Google Chrome Update Question
by Tim Evans
Usually, dnf updates take care of updating Google Chrome. Lately, for
the past week or so, however, there's a big pink button in Chrome's
status bar labeled "Update," but dnf insists I have the latest version
(google-chrome-stable-115.0.5790.110-1.x86_64).
If you click this button, it tells you it's unable to update Chrome and
asks if you want to re-install.
Is this just a new idiot light that means nothing, or is there some sort
of conflict with update versions?
Thanks.

Printer drivers and raw queues are deprecated
by Michael Hennebry
CUPS wrote:
> Note:Printer drivers and raw queues are deprecated and will stop working in a
future version of CUPS.
Then what?
It wrote that after I installed a Brother HL-L2360DW
using the printer-driver-brlaser-6.2.6-1.fc38.x86_64 package.
It provided the
Brother HL-L2360D series, using brlaser v6 (en)
option under model.
If CUPS rejects my printer before it runs out of ink,
will I have another option?

Cross-check of /proc/cpuinfo
by Jeffrey Walton
Hi Everyone,
I purchased an HP Envy 17T during Amazon Prime. The machine is spec'd
with a Intel Core i7-13700H: 6 performance cores, 8 efficiency cores,
20 threads total. <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCZ3XFBX> and
<https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/232128/intel-core-i7...>.
I installed Fedora 38 with the KDE spin. I did not bother to boot to
Windows. Secure Boot = Off, and away I went...
When I cat /proc/cpuinfo, I see the model name "Core i7-8700" with 12
cpu's. I do not see a model name of "Core i7-13700H", and I do not see
the 20 cpu's.
The "Core i7-8700" is unexpected to me. I'm pretty sure the wrong
laptop was shipped. But this is my first 13th gen machine with
performance and efficiency cores. I did not see any kernel bugs that
would cause it to display the wrong model name for 13th gen
processors.
Can anyone verify cpuinfo should be displaying a model name of "Core
i7-13700H" and should be showing 20 logical cpu's, please?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Why is my default printer wrong?

Hi All,
Fedora 38
cups-2.4.7-1.fc38.x86_64
Why do all my programs default to "Cups-PDF" and not
"HLL2300D". All Wine and native Linux programs.
And changing it in my programs does not stick.
Many thanks,

ssh new cloud instance / new user
by bruce
Hi.
Lost my old notes. Laying out how to setup test cloud instance to be
able to have testUserA and root
testUserA will login/access via ssh
testUSerA will create private/pub key, with /home/testUserA/.ssh on
the CloudInstance (D1)
ssh will allow testUserA
ssh will not allow root access
root will have passwd -- passwd1 (example)
root will not have ssh key, (why would it need it?)
my question..
testUserA will access via ssh and then can simply su root to do root things..
or should there be an intermediate user with "sudo" rights that
testUserA would change to, to then do root things.
thoughts/comments.
thanks

sudoers security question
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
It seems to me that since /etc/sudoers is visible from a
standard user account, that all a bad guy has to do is
cat the file, find some program that is elevated, then
overwrite that program with his evil deeds, and boom,
you are hacked.
Am I missing something?
