systemd-oomd insanely aggressive with non-DE logins

I have 3 machines with clean F37 installs. One of the F37 machines has 4GB of RAM, and I maintain it as a backup and normally only log in via ssh and do dnf updates via command line. In the last few weeks this has become extremely difficult to do due to being automatically logged out, presumably by systemd-oomd. It happens even if I boot in multiuser, which ought to reduce memory use. From what little I've read and what experimentation I've done so far, it appears that being logged into a DE (maybe only GNOME or KDE?) protects against this, but non-DE logins (including ssh), and any commands running in them, are not protected. This goes against the expectation that non-DE access should be LESS likely to run out of memory, especially if there isn't even a DE running. How hard would it be for systemd-oomd to be configured to protect non-DE logins and anything running in them? I've also read that configuring non-zram swap might be a cure. As I said, these are clean F37 installs, and if that's necessary for reasonable behavior when there's not enough RAM, the installer should be doing it automatically. In my case, I don't think that's the cause, since the free command suggests that I'm only using a fraction of both the memory and swap even when the automatic logging out is happening.

Cockpit as root

I am not able to login to cockpit, localhost:9090, as root. I can login as a normal user, but that isn't acceptable. Why would I even need cockpit as a normal user? I have a fully updated Fedora instance. It may be related somehow to plasma as at the top of the login dialog I see "Fedora Linux KDE Plasma". I suppose there is a configuration option to allow root logins. Note that sudo is not an option I am interested in using. Emmett

Hi All, Fedora 37 I have a caching server running. Other than digging out my "forward" from /etc/named.conf to figure out what my DNS server is, is there a way to use "dig" or other to figure out what my actual DNS server is? Many thanks, -T

How do I do a group reinstall of Xfce?

Hi All, I have both MATE and Xfce installed. If I boot into MATE, such that Xfce is not running, or not start a GUI at all, how do I do a group reinstall of Xfce? Warning for KDE users with HiDPI displays

I "dnf updated" today and it took my system to KDE Plasma 5.27.1, and there is an issue with scaling on HiDPI displays. As near as I can tell the issue isn't fixed until 5.27.4, but that is not yet available in updates-testing. There are workarounds, but so far my experience is they make the system usable, but not "right".

GNOME interface is too bulky

Hello Everyone, Is there a tweak in GNOME to shrink the GUI? It's huge! There's so much wasted space. It's eating up a ton of my screen real estate and driving me bananas. I like GNOME otherwise, I've been using it for 15 years or something silly like that and I don't want to move to a different desktop environment. mounting a drive on F37

Hi, I am trying to modify my /etc/fstab to mount a drive (where I want to place a backup). From looking at the current setup created by anaconda, it looks like I have to setup using UUID or LABEL (however these seem to be blank, see below). First, my setup. I have one SSD that has / and all the partitions associated with it. I have three additional drives, two of which are hardware (for historical reasons) RAIDed, and have /home in them, and a third new drive that is a "free agent" (sorry for not knowing the correct term, but I hope that I can convey the meaning). I want this to be mounted at boot as /mnt/whatever (I have verified that this mount-point has been created and exists). So, I look at my /dev/disk/by-disk-seq and see: ~$ ls 1@ 2@ 4@ 5@ 6@ ~$ ll * lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 1 -> ../../sda lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 2 -> ../../sdb lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 4 -> ../../sdc lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 9 Mar 29 14:01 5 -> ../../sr0 OK, there is an a, b and c. The d is the first drive that has the /, the sr0 is the swap, and the a, b and c are the three drives. It appears to me that the sda and sdc are the ones raided (they have the same UUID and also lsblk indicates so (I have made up the part numbers here, for security). I have to say that I expected sda and sdb to be the RAIDed drives, I thought that sdc would be the new one that has been put in. But perhaps I am wrong in my understanding. Indeed, I get nothing back when I try: $ sudo blkid /dev/sdb1 or even $ sudo blkid /dev/sdb So, how do I mount this drive onto my /etc/fstab?
