Fedora F40 Won't Power Off

Hi, Ever since a couple of updates ago, from KDE, when I select "Shutdown" KDE displays a black screen (it used to be that you could press the escape key and it would show you the apps that were closing down so you could see which apps were causing shutdown/reboot lag, but that doesn't seem to be working at the moment) but never physically powers off the pc, even if I leave it running all day/all night. Has anyone else seen this issue or know what I can look for to identify why? I have just put on an update that has installed kernel 6.9.4, I haven't done a restart yet to see if that rectifies the issue. regards, Steve

crazy dependencies

I'd like to know why this: dnf remove gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free-1.20.3-1.fc36.x86_64 gstreamer1- plugins-bad-free-extras-1.20.3-1.fc36.x86_64 gstreamer1-plugins-bad- freeworld-1.20.3-1.fc36.x86_64 Wants to do all of this (quoted below), it's a virtual system destruct for the want of removing some codecs. What harebrained logic is involved in working this out? It's not competent computer coding by any stretch of the imagination. I'd say that nearly ALL of those things would have been installed on the system before I'd installed those gstreamer things, so they're clearly NOT "dependent" on them. As to why I want to remove them, I'm trying to narrow down why playing some video files *sometimes* crash my system hard. And I say "sometimes" because at other times the same video file will play without any problems. Putting noautoremove into the command reduces the list of things it shouldn't interfere with down from 153 to 46 packages, but it's still interfering with things it shouldn't touch, and will end up destroying the system. I'm yet to see if it actually helps with the crashing problem, but I had to resort to: rpm -e --nodeps gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free-1.20.3- 1.fc36.x86_64 Chrome/Chromium illegal instruction lately?

After some recent updates, I seem to get an illegal instruction the first time or two I start Chrome/Chromium after boot. If I close it and reopen it a time or two, it'll work like normal from that point on, until I reboot again. It's the weirdest thing, I can't think of anything I've ever seen act like this before. Not sure if this is a problem with Chrome/Chromium, some library dependency, or even the kernel. alternatives is forgetful?

I've always set my emacs alternatives to lucid emacs. Today I did a big dnf update, rebooted to get new kernel, and then got an error when I started emacs about the "pure GTK" version not operating correctly under X11 (one of the reasons I use lucid). Why did my alternatives config setting revert? Anyway, I've now removed all versions except lucid. Maybe that will make it stick :-).

Seamonkey not displaying pix

Seamonkey under the last several releases of Fedora Linux does not display pix. It says, inter alia, "Error: could not load." It also gives me a link to Media Viewer; but the help page for that is over my head. I tried posting via Gmane to seamonkey.user, but have had no replies. I tried dnf reinstall seamonkey (with seamonkey not open), but that didn't help. It used to be a good browser. brlaser fails to build

I recently installed F40. My Brother HL-L2360DW printer is one of the few that fedora linus's does not handle by default. In the past, brlaser, https://github.com/pdewacht/brlaser , has helped me out of that difficulty. This time, no go: Despite doing a sudo dnf install 'cups*' , make tells gives me undefined reference messages: cupsRasterReadPixels cupsRasterReadHeader2 cupsRasterOpen Anyone have an idea how to fix this? -- Michael hennebry(a)mail.cs.ndsu.NoDak.edu "SCSI is NOT magic. smokeping alternative?

Hi, I've been using smokeping to monitor network problems for what seems like decades. It now seems to have been removed from the internet, lol. What are you using to monitor network drop-outs and latency and traffic problems? I'm already using munin to monitor service performance, and nagios to monitor services, but I'm looking for something that can graph latency in the same way as smokeping used to. Ideas greatly appreciated.

Using Signal-Desktop w Fedora 40

Greetings, Is there a way of using Signal-Desktop with Fedora 40. C'era una volta/once upon a time, there was. But all of the instructions for finding rpms, installation, etc., are either stale or unusable (installation fails; too many depencies that are not findable). Suggestions?
