argh -- can't get wireless in someone else's house

i'm embarrassed to admit that i can't, for the life of me, get a wireless connection at a friend's house at the moment. updated fedora 8, and a stock linksys WRT54GL. i have the SSID, i have the WEP key, i even have the router password, so i've logged in and checked everything -- no MAC filtering, no DHCP client limit, etc. but when i try to bring up wireless, /var/log/messages shows me: Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801 Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801 Feb 8 08:37:59 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8 Feb 8 08:38:07 localhost dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11 ... Still on FC4???? On a Pentium 3 too I presume? Clear-QAM and OTA require an ATSC tuner, while an NTSC tuner is needed for analog cable. There are tuner units which will do both, although not all will do so simultaneously. Mythdora is a Fedora based, all in one install of mythtv. It will set up everything you need from one iso image. And Mythtv has definitely NOT required 'your DBA to set up a database' since well before Fedora 4. If your hardware is known to Fedora, then mythtv will not require any 'channel entered frequencies'. You merely select the proper tuning basis, such as US-Broadcast or US-cable when setting up the tuner(s). At the moment, the problematic area is setting up QAM on cable channels due to the cablecos using their own variable channel numbers for the channels (and generally, not including proper PSIP infor in the stream). That is, of course, where the cableco actually provides some clear QAM...which Rogers Cable in Canada, for example, has not done since June 2007. This error pops up whenever my system boots up. Clicking on [Details <<] produces a message box with the single entry "Details" in it. What's happening? Thanks - jon

ESC/P thermal receipt printers and Linux...

Running dmesg after plugging my POS-5890K labelled usb thermal receipt printer, it identifies itself as full-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci idVendor=0416, idProduct=5011 Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Product: POS58 USB Printer Manufacturer: GD32 Microelectronics SerialNumber: Printer I found the hard way that these printers are not supported by CUPS by default ... one has to go the extra length to either send esc/p codes manually via your own app http://kg4zqz.blogspot.com/2016/08/escposf-thermal-printer-filter-and.html ...or compile a driver from source, just like 20 years ago for some printers... maybe 2018 will be the year of desktop linux *sarcasm* I've tried this driver and it didn't work... http://scruss.com/blog/2015/07/12/thermal-printer-driver-for-cups-linux-and… (the driver source was fetched by git from its current github repo, so it's not out of date, it's in fact newer than the above blog post) What gives more clues is the small piece of thermal paper that came with the printer with a printout of its self-test (surely from Windows). It reads: 58-IV-U Thermal Printer Version: 58.E-Z04-AA Revised date: 06-Jan-2017 Command Standard: EPSON (ESC/POS) Print mode: Normal mode & Hex Mode Print method: Line Thermal Print width: 384 dots/line Print speed: 90 mm/s Chinese Mode: NO Print density: Level3 Current Codepage:0 Interface Type: USB Current Character: Chinese (GB18030) Alphanumeric Code Page: 0: OEM437 (Std.Europe) 1: Katakana 2:OEM850 (Multilingual) (…) 96:(Thai2) I wonder why the CUPS folks have not released a generic “EPSON ESC/POS” printer driver where the above parameters can be tweaked and entered manually. The driver mentioned above was compiled, and installed but didn’t work. A sample print gave gibberish. A second text-only printing (by clicking the CUPS “print self-test page” read “IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU’RE USING THE WRONG DRIVER FOR YOUR PRINTER”. A crude bug-finding code it seems… Any ideas before I head over to the CUPS maling list and pull my hair? rsync problems after update

On Fedora 40: For years I've nightly updated copies of three home directories using rsync. In yesterday's update, rsync updated to 3.4.0-1 and the nightly run failed on all three directories with the following error message: sending incremental file list Internal hashtable error: illegal key supplied! rsync error: errors with program diagnostics (code 13) at \ hashtable.c(88) [generator=3.4.0] Reboot (not done after update) did not change things. I downgraded rsync to 3.2.7-7 and the copy program ran normally. Anyone else seeing problems with rsync 3.4.0-1? -- Jon H. LaBadie jonfu(a)jgcomp.com

Hi All and RedHatters, Windows 10 is going to be End of Life soon. Canonical is promoting Ubuntu Pro. Does IBM have any plans for Red Hat to take advantage of this opportunity? I post this here as I see many people with @redhat.com frequenting here. Thanks, ----- Lee

After F41 waydroid System Update, no longer runs

Any ideas? I'm not sure if this is even a Waydroid bug since it wasn't an update in the waydroid package that triggered it.

sound problem on f40

Bonjour, I have some sound problems on my f40: 1- sound works with some applications like audacious or vlc or kaffeine but it does not work from sources via firefox or chromium 2- I have an usb camera with a mic and this mic is not detected by skype for instance... All this was working "before" (sound-web, mic) what stupidity could I have done? And how can I correct this? Update failure in Fedora 40

I am trying to upgrade my laptop to Fedora 41, but I cannot get a clean update state in the current Fedora 40. I ran "dnf update" successfully and it installed many updates including a new kernel. After a reboot, much to my surprise dnfdragora reported 18 updates available. LibreOffice scaling with mixed DPI on KDE

Hi, While I'm at it, here's another issue I'm seeing: with mixed-DPI setups using KDE, LibreOffice's scaling is completely out of whack on secondary monitors. This is my setup: - Fedora KDE spin - Laptop is using 1.75x scaling - External monitor is using 1x scaling LibreOffice is fine on the laptop screen. When I move it to the external monitor, the UI elements become gigantic - it's as if it's correcting the scaling the wrong way around. Mabye someone else has seen this and knows a fix like an environment variable tweak. Sijmen J. Mulder
