Would like to replace BIOS on Lenovo X131e running Fedora - should this work?

I have a Lenovo X131e which is currently running an old BIOS from johnlewis.ie (4.0-6588-g4acd8ea-dirty, 09/04/2014). It was originally a Chromebook and I replaced the BIOS so there would be no danger of it automatically reinstalling Chrome. I see there is a Lenovo page at https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds029771-bios-update-utility-boo… with what appear to be BIOS updates from 2019 for the x131e, any machine type, but labeled as for Windows. Are other people using this already with Fedora? If I installed it using the Bootable CD image, any reason why the current Fedora-only install wouldn't continue to work? Just want to make sure since it's currently working okay and I just don't like the idea of having an old nonstandard BIOS installed.

F41 Firefox migration

I followed the process of copying my whole .mozilla hidden folder (after first renaming the one created by firefox) from my old F38 system to my new F41 system. Seems to work. Probably brought along all sorts of old cruft that might have been better lost. One problem though. On starting Firefox after installing the new .mozilla folder, I got a page opened: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/welcome/25/ Warning me that Firefox will BREAK on Mar 14, 2025 due to expiring certs. Will this be fixed automagically on a Firefox update or is there some specific file(s) to copy from that renamed .mozilla folder? thanks

Replacing nano with vim - logout needed?

I ran: dnf install vim-default-editor --allowerasing But I am still getting nano when I try to "crontab -e" Do I have to logout and back in for this change to take? Or is there an easier way?

F40 KDE hangs after 25 minutes when idle

I have a laptop running F40 Server with KDE, fully updated, that I have been using without issue. I am in the process of moving to a new laptop and plan to repurpose the old one. But I am running into an issue with the old laptop. If the laptop is idle it locks up after ~25 minutes. "Idle" can mean no one logged-in, or a user logged-in but not doing anything. If the user is doing something, it does not lock-up. "Something" can be running a Windows 10 VM, a ssh session running "top", etc. To recover the system I have to do a hard-reset using the power switch. Things I have checked: - Nothing is displayed on the screen - There are no entries in the UEFI BIOS logs - There are no messages for the lock-up shown by "journalctl -b -1 -r". - All of the entries in /etc/systemd/sleep.conf have been changed from "yes" to "no" and uncommented - no change - systemctl entries for sleep, suspend, hibernate have been masked - no change - Even though the desktop is KDE, I have checked "gsettings" for any power or timeout related settings - nothing of interest - If I boot off of a F40 Cinnamon install on a USB SSD drive, there are no issues. Theories: - auto sleep/suspend/hibernate - contraindicated by no change in behavior with changes to sleep[.conf and/or masking system units. Also, system should wake-up from any of these states. - thermal event - contraindicated by lack of UEFI log entries, lack of issue when system is active, lack of issue when booted off of USB drive - hardware issue - contraindicated by lack of issue when system is active or booted off of USB drive. Any suggestions? The only other thing I can think of to try is a re-install; I plan to do this eventually anyway, but wanted to delay for a few weeks. In the meantime I guess I can keep the Windows 10 VM running, it just seems wasteful.

Session alrady running

Hello, Now, propabaly after a remmina session, I get Session alrady running Log is not possible because a remore session is already running for To login, you must log out from the remote session or force stop it The only option is to canczl. Then I run sudo pkill -KILL -u <username> This let me login, but the issue reappears at the next time. Would you have a solution? I recently came across Quickemu: https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickemu It's a wrapper for QEMU that facilitates the creation of VMs including multiple Linux distros, Windows verions and MacOS versions. It even downloads the ISOs for you. It would be nice to have it in the Fedora repos (licensing terms permitting). poc

F41 - which image has the most programs?

I am looking into how best to do a install without "trusting" the Internet. What installation image has the mostest? How much can I get on the system (need openssl, python stuff, QR code stuff) without connecting to the Internet? After installing the OS, I would add other stuff from a repro on a DVD. It has been YEARS since I built my own repros, but I can probably still find my notes. This is all to establish a trail of trust for the software on a CA server with all its ports blocked with security table and making a Tamper Evident claim. Best I can figure out is my sole risk is that the bad guy's code provides the keypair for the certs, rather than the system generating its own. And this is hard to prove without having a fully trustable system. At least with a Tamper Evident system, this would have to come from the code initially installed. There are mitigations I can apply, but they take time to show that bad things happened. Yes, no updates to the software on a system that is expected to do its job (sign certs) for 10+ years. The root CA system may be used a couple times a year. The intermediate auth CA probably also a couple times a year. The intermediate issuing CA could well be doing 100k signings per day! (see IETF DRIP design for UAS Session IDs). But it will not use a QR code protocol that requires a human or two, but a USB protocol between it and the UAS Service Provider (USS) registration system. Only X509 stuff passed over USB (still needs to be speced). Only the issuing CA is running all the time. The others are vaulted and only taken out when the camera is recording. Fun stuff! The auditors are going to have a field day with me. I am doing my best that I don't need to spend $100K per CA key signing with them...

New, used, Lenovo - WiFi not detected

I just got a used Lenovo x131e supposedly just missing its HDD. Well I got plenty of HDD with old installs, not a problem. Boot up (an old F35 disk) and no WiFi. I check Bios and WiFi enabled. I put in a different WiFi card from another system. No Wifi. I boot off the F41 Xfce Live CD, no WiFi and NMCLI does not list WiFi. Any diagnostic tools to try? thanks

Ungoogled Chromium & Youtube - anybody?

Hi there. My Ungoogled Chromium stopped playing YT videos, sometimes might play first 19 secs of a clip but mostly does not even start the playback, stuck with loading logo animation - everything else loads, works on YT. I did reset ://flags & settings, also cleared data. Does YT plays in this Chromium for you, all good? thanks, L.

F41 Xfce Mousepad launcher problems

When I go to launch a new Mousepad, it gets stuffed in a currently running Mousepad window rather than a new image. Moving said window into the current workspace from where I had it. grumble. Where is the behavior controlled? I tend to have a dozen Mousepads open with some work I am doing noted (like openSSL work). F38 Xfce did it right. F41 is not and I don't see where this is controlled. I tried launching a new Firefox instance and than created a new window rather than a new tab in the then current window. So some apps get this as I want.... thanks

F41 Xfce panel tab labels

I am seeing strange, to me, labels on my window tabs in the Xfce panel. Like Firefox is labeled: Org.mozilla.firefox Terminal: Xfce4-terminal Thunderbird new message: Net.thunderbird - But this does get replaced with the subject line like this missive having Wrtie:F41 Xfc... I have looked around at various settings and don't see where this behavior is controlled. Can anyone point me to where I can alter what goes into the panel tabs? Also panel is stacking all related tabs together. I and seeing a bullet with a number and then the name when I have multiple windows of the same app. I have looked in Settings, both Windows Manager and Windows Manager Tweaks and am not finding this control. Thank you for any guidance.

F41 - I forgot to make a swap partition

Arg. the Install did not default a swap partition so I forgot to work it in when I divided the drive as I wanted... I am using EXT4 for my / /boot /home partitions. Just plain partitioning. Been doing it this way for lots of builds. But this time, I missed setting aside 16Gb as a physical swap partition, added to the memory swap. This system only has 16Gb memory, so the virtual swap starts out at 8Gb. Since /dev/sdb4, /home is the last 800Gb with 500Gb unused, is there any way to safely shrink this partition 16Gb and then allocate that as swap? thanks

default kernel NOT the latest one installed ?

Hi guys. Some while I go my Fedora lost, dropped it's way to set newly installed kernel to be the default one. Whatever I set manually to be default, remains default regardless of new kernels installed later - which was not the case, should not be the case, right? How to "fix" it back to "normal" ? I fiddle with some GRUB settings & info I found on the net - but to no avail - one reservation, a caveat perhaps, I have kernel-debug installed & I wonder if that "messes" things up. many thanks, L.

redirect remote rsyslog messages to journal

I have a server (e7) and a remote machine (xilinx). Remote log messages are sent to port 514 and accepted by the server. I can see them in the relevant log files (messages, cron etc.) in /etc/rsyslog.conf I have module(load="imudp") input(type="imudp" port="514") module(load="imtcp") input(type="imtcp" port="514") So the remote messages are processed same as the local ones. syslog shows: Feb 22 10:38:10 xilinx systemd[1]: Starting Stop ureadahead data collection... Feb 22 10:38:10 xilinx systemd[1]: Started Stop ureadahead data collection. However I do not see the remote messages in the journal (or maybe I am not using the correct journalctl command?). F41 - df command showing lots of tmpfs

I use df command to see where I am on disk utilization. Well this time it won't be much of an issue, as I got a 1TB SSD for the same price I last got a 500GB. but anyway. Some 10 tmpfs mounts in /run/credentials that I really don't want to be bothered seeing. I am trying to figure out how to use the exclude type option, but I have not figured it out, nor is google giving me guidance.... thanks

installing F41 - qemu?

I am finally upgrading from my F38 system. I do a clean install on another system, then migrate my user account. So I am moving along OK with the install and am now up to my use of qemu and virt-manager: dnf groupinstall "virtualization" dnf install qemu virt-manager libvirt Well first it is now dnf5-group, it seems. OK. But "virtualization" is not in the list of groups. Just install these packages? Or what else is needed? On past updates, I just copy my old images to the new system and get them running.. thanks

rsync problems after update

On Fedora 40: For years I've nightly updated copies of three home directories using rsync. In yesterday's update, rsync updated to 3.4.0-1 and the nightly run failed on all three directories with the following error message: sending incremental file list Internal hashtable error: illegal key supplied! rsync error: errors with program diagnostics (code 13) at \ hashtable.c(88) [generator=3.4.0] Reboot (not done after update) did not change things. I downgraded rsync to 3.2.7-7 and the copy program ran normally. Anyone else seeing problems with rsync 3.4.0-1? -- Jon H. LaBadie jonfu(a)jgcomp.com

Professor Google told me to just use zbarimg: zbarimg --raw /dev/video0 But I get: ERROR: Unable to open file (/dev/video0) I tried sudo, but that did not help. recommendations? I do wonder how it will "know" that I have the QR in front of the camera and it is in proper focus... 11 year old server!

Hi All, I just visited a customer I had designed a Fedora 30 server. That makes the computer eleven years old! I do not dare upgrade or even install updates it as the point-of-sale software he is running a YUGE nasty K-L-U-G-E. The server is works well still. He does not want to go with a new software vendor that has good support. He will only do it when thing come down around his ears. I told the customer he was pushing it. Your thoughts? -T

Here's the problem traceroute pvr traceroute to pvr (10.0.0.5), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets 1 _gateway (192.168.2.1) 20.167 ms 20.130 ms 20.122 ms 2 .... (pvr is another box, configured for the same local net) So, the route leaves the local net and wanders off into the ether.. So is there a local fix, or did I got what I asked for, just not what I wanted.
