configuring 2-speed

I've been using Starlink configured for a single-band 5GHz Wi-Fi connection with success for some time. I decided to try the dual-band configuration, that is to create a Wi-Fi network operating at 2.4GHz, so as to replace the modem that has been connecting to a 2.4GHz printer. The configuration appears have been successful, as I'm able to connect to the internet using the 2.4GHz band. However, I'm unable to connect to the printer.. (Ping fails) Any suggestions as to what I've missed? Thanks.

off-topic (maybe) Firefox: stop trying HTTPS without asking me

Hi, Just thought I'd try asking here, because I'm not having much luck with Google... Many times, way too many damn times, if I try to access some address with Firefox it will go into HTTPS mode when I don't want it to. For instance, I've actually typed http://192.168.1.254 to get into my router's admin page, because it doesn't do HTTPS. And if Firefox doesn't get instant results with what I typed it changes it to https://192.168.1.254 (which is never going to work). Likewise with other devices that I might be testing on my LAN, and may be unplugged/reset while I'm testing, so I want to just hammer away at the same address sitting in the browser's address bar without the damn browser changing it on me. Grrrrrrrr, I hate autocorrect style of crap everywhere they put it. The HTTPS-only modes are disabled. Stupid option that is. Many things do NOT have HTTPS. Most things don't need it. It just increases workload to encrypt unimportant things. And I wish they'd stop hiding HTTP and HTTPS in the address bar. Let me see the letters there so I know what it's doing. I have 2 Lenovo x140e with 16Gb mem for my main Fedora systems (and one more for Win10). The 11" screen is VERY important to be able to work comfortably on an airplane. I HAD 3 Lenovo x120e with 4Gb for testing and special purposes. 2 died recently (fan failures after only some 10+ years running!) and I need to replace them. I see one ebay ad for an x131e. Is this comparable? Anything else to consider? I like Thinkpads as the eraserhead pointer is very valuable; I don't like touch pads. Thanks!

Hello, Does something change since the last update of fedora 40? I have a laptop running applications from itself or/and from ssh. MATE hidden files question

Hi All, I created a qemu-kvm virtual machine from Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-39-1.5.iso so I could run Lotus Approach, which I wrote my accounting software in 30 years ago, in Win 9.1. Wine 10.x does not run Approach properly. Wine is always two steps forward and three step backward. Anyway, MATE won't let me see hidden files with a lot of File Open on various software, such as Leafpad. I have to open a command shell and cd into the hidden directory to start the program. It is ANNOYING. How do I tell MATE I was to always see hidden files? Many thanks, -T

thunderbird problem

I am on f40 and regularly keeping up with updates. $ uname -a Linux e7.eyal.emu.id.au 6.12.11-100.fc40.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Jan 23 22:07:15 UTC 2025 x86_64 GNU/Linux TB is 128.6.0esr (64-bit) Short story: TB stays active with high %CPU in "top". I start TB. Fetch mail (POP3). So far so good. After a few times I do "Compact Folders". The messages go though a few folders and then say it is done. However, the blue line at the bottom right stays solid blue and "top" shows about 60-70% CPU. This is with the focus and the mouse are NOT on TB. I later collect mail and that line goes wavy and stays so after mail is collected. Usually forever. I once left it overnight... The only solution is to restart TB. Not nice. How do I find what TB is actually doing? BTW: - I removed all the .msf files, which were then recreated when I did a global search. - I vacuumed the sql databases for this profile. -- Eyal at Home (fedora(a)eyal.emu.id.au)

I need PDF editor recommendations

Hi All, Fedora 41. I have tried both PDF Studio and Master PDF Editor. PDF Studio does not support RPM and has bad tech support Master PDF Editor supports RPM, has responsive tech support, although they are not real helpful at times, and has all kinds of print problems, such as not supporting duel sided printing (it is there but does not work, despite their promises to fix it) and the print preview does not match the actual print. Only Office supports RPM and does print correctly, but it is awkward to use and has ton of bugs. Libre Office supports RPM but is bug city on PDF's (Draw) You guy know of a good PDF editor that you like? Many thanks, -T

DNF Openjdk Update Issue in F41

Hi, A "sudo dnf upgrade" produced the following messages twice at the beginning of the update process and again with the trigger scripts. These messages provide instructions for what to do in F42, but what is the solution for F41, or isn't there? Also, what is the dnf 5 logs related message? In addition, what is the meaning of the message "jdk duplicates jre", that doesn't make sense to me? I understand that the jdk includes the jre, but the written message I don't understand? After F41 waydroid System Update, no longer runs

KDE and rumors

Hi All, I just tested a program to see how it would react to the Wayland only environment of KDE. From what little I saw of KDE, I could not help but notice that KDE is really polished. It would be a good choice for moderate and above users. MATE is still the best choice for low skill user. I heard a rumor that Fedora may be switching over to KDE. Can anyone confirm or deny the rumor? My vote is that it would be a good thing. Gnome is too weird for me. -T

sound problem on f40

Bonjour, I have some sound problems on my f40: 1- sound works with some applications like audacious or vlc or kaffeine but it does not work from sources via firefox or chromium 2- I have an usb camera with a mic and this mic is not detected by skype for instance... All this was working "before" (sound-web, mic) what stupidity could I have done? And how can I correct this? Installing NVIDIA drivers killed wireless...

I have an ASUS ROG Strix laptop running Fedora 41, KDE spin. It was working OK, though there were some screen issues. So, I installed akmod-nvidia from rpmfusion. All the screen issues cleared up, but I lost wireless networking. There's no wireless device, it seems. The networking widget just says no network connections available. I tried pluggin in a Realtek usb wireless adapter, but it wouldn't work either. In /var/log/messages, the USB adapter is recognized as a Realtek device, but that's about it. I grepped /var/log/messages for NetworkManager, and I find that it says it loaded with "success." Is this a known issue with a simple solution, or do I have to reinstall and stick with the nouveau drivers? As an aside, I have blacklisted the nouveau driver. Which package to file a bug against for the Live ISO?

Hi Everyone, I screwed up an install on a GPT system. I booted back into the LiveCD and tried to use gdisk (the GPT equivalent of fdisk). gdisk was missing from the ISO. I'd like to file a bug for the missing package, but I don't know which package is used for the Live ISO. Which package should I file a bug against for the Live ISO? Thanks in advance.

Update failure in Fedora 40

I am trying to upgrade my laptop to Fedora 41, but I cannot get a clean update state in the current Fedora 40. I ran "dnf update" successfully and it installed many updates including a new kernel. After a reboot, much to my surprise dnfdragora reported 18 updates available.
