General note:

When debugging, create another ordinary user account to test things.  Do
not simply become root, and start debugging as the root user.  Apart
from the ramifications of making a silly mistake, you're not testing
things under the same conditions as a normal user account.

One of the things I do when setting up any new computer is create at
least one or more test accounts, so they're ready and waiting for the
day I need to fix things.
