P.S. if I still were in the possession of my old netbook (given away cause reading glasses needed) I would check to get ClearLinux on it. [....]
Well, I gave up and DBANned it -- and today, feeling less old and more sanguine, downloaded and tried to install ClearLinux after all.
I got a fatal failure, saying the poor old machine has only a 32- bit CPU. Re-checked the CL site, and 64-bit does seem to be an absolute requirement. Rats.
Anybody have a favorite minimal 32-bit OS?

maybe an option for you if you want to "retire" your netbook too ?
I'll start with offering it to a few friends, then to anyone on the LUG; there might be some student group on campus that needs little more than a calculator and maybe a minimal word processor. I doubt it's still worth shipping overseas.
