For those who might be interested : On the Unofficial Fedora FAQ website (www.fedora.faq) I found a neat solution to control Nautilus look & feel (other gnome apps as well !):
using the gconf-2 tool you can set almost any parameter.
gconf-2 -a /apps/nautilus/preferences
gives you a list of all settings
gconf-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/side_pane_view true
gave me my side pane back (the key was neither false or true in my case, but empty).
Now, if I only could find a way to use the scripting facility in the Nautilus manager....

My apologies, I should have mentioned it, but right clicking and going via the menu gives the same result. I only get a Nautilus window without the side pane and no option in the menu (side pane) to bring it back.
I have gone through the manual and browsed the archive but can find a reference to my problem.
When looking/searching in the ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus directory I noticed a directory called sidebar_panels/ . The %gconf.xml file in it is empty (0 bytes). I guess this has something to do with it, but I don know what to put in it to make the sidepanel reappear.
Can anybody (who has and is using a sidebar) tell me what is in his/her &gconf.xml file so that I can test if that would help. Otherwise I would like to know if I can safely uninstall Nautilus and reinstall it again with the guarantee i will have my panel back.
PS : Reason for sliding the panel away under FC1 was because it was easy to use the browse buttons on top of the screen. I know that I can still do that in the current Nautilus setup, but I guess they have changed the default way of working for a reason (many users seem to like it after giving it a serious try). I just would like to be able to give it a try as well...

Hi,
I had removed the side pane while I was still working on FC1. Now that I have upgraded to FC2, I don“t see any option or possibility to restore the side pane (in the Nautilus view menu I do not have the show Side pane option !). Also the possibility to run a script is not available in the file menu of any nautilus window I open ?!
clicking on the View > Reset view to defaults does not help/change anything.
Can anybody give me a clue on how to get the side pane back ???
Thanks, Marc
Hi Marc;
Instead of double clicking on Computer or User's Home and opening the basic Nautilus view.
Try right clicking on Computer or User's Home and left click on Browse Folder.
Also in the Gnome Menu you can choose Browse Filesystem.
That should open the view that you are used to with Nautilus.
Sincerely, Gerald
