Can you create a new VM, attaching that image and use it successfully?
I'll try that, but I'd still like to figure out why it didn't work. Note that the VM suffered a crash (forced power-down) so its filesystem needs fixing. However a Windows DVD in rescue mode didn't work, so I was hoping a snapshot would do the trick. However I'm not entirely sure if this is supported, or if snapshots are only useful as a rollback mechanism.

Sure, by all means. However performing this test, will hopefully shed light and verify the image is solid.
