yes. i have always run updates and package installs as root. saves a lot of typing in su and password.
Try using KPackageKit as a non-root user. I could also provide you with a patched PolicyKit which works as root if you absolutely need to run KPackageKit as root.
i do not 'absolutely need to', but it does make 'my life' easier.
along with having to learn this new kde with 'plasmoids', 'widgets', and 'gotchaits'. :)
