The point is that I wasn't intending it to go to the list, and that I wrote it the way I did because it might end up on http://www.jerrypournelle.com the way the email I referred to was. If I'd been sending it to J. Random Phriend, I wouldn't have given the name, but I thought that a few of you might know who I was talking about.
The point is that the right response would have been "Oh, sorry" instead of some gratuitous name-dropping to try and make it seem OK. It's not OK to post political or military messages on a technical mailing list.
