On my Epson scanner I had to:
Find the file Esfw41.bin on the CD that came with the scanner. This file is 64000 bytes long.
Put it in /usr/share/sane/snapscan/
Edit /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf, make sure that there's a line like:
firmware /usr/share/sane/snapscan/Esfw41.bin
Sometimes xsane doesn't find the scanner at the first try, then one has to start xsane again.
