The brute force method for changing the background is not needed. As
I posted here the other day[1]:
su -c 'gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/var/lib/gdm/.gconf -s
--type string /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /path/to/background.jpg' gdm
