I checked that as well, no luck
actually I have 2 laptops with the same issue, a Dell M3800 and an ASUS zenbook, with kernel 4.1.x I have no external monitor capability

Also, make sure they aren't stacked. Move the screen in the display to see if the external monitor is below it. I also had that happen to me.
