I actually have had the same issue using GNOME for quite some times, even changed my mouse thinking it was the culprit. So yes maybe it's a generic issue?
I recently switched to a wireless mouse and sometimes see this. I never saw it with my old wired usb mouse. Is everyone else also seeing this with a wireless mouse? Sometimes when I reboot I get errors about unable to properly talk to the usb device which is the wireless mouse dongle and I have to unplug and plug it back in, at which point it works flawlessly.
I've been meaning to move the mouse to a windows box and use it for a while to see if the same thing happens there, but haven't worked up the energy to try that yet.
Thanks, Tom and Frederic. My mouse is a wired (not wireless) one.

FWIW, I've been using a ten year old Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. All of that time on Linux, most of the time on Fedora & RH. No problems at all
