I generally use ixquick.com. They are also privacy oriented. As far as I know, they actually access other search services, and launder the results. They also allow the use of proxy addresses when viewing results of queries. I notice that lately they have begun to show google advertising with their results, but I think they still pass no information and keep no user information around.
But, as you say, Google is the gold standard. They probably have more storage and computing power than the US government, so they can really slice and dice the data they gather.
