Yes!  I can see the headlines now:

"Gnome releases a new UI, called Gnome 3!"

"Microsoft declares desktop Victory!  Gives their employees the day off!"

6 months from now:

"Gnome re-releases Gnome Classic.  Claims its what their users want."

3 months after that:

"Gnome 3 nowhere to be found!"

Sound familiar?  (Now, where did I put that Coca Cola Classic I was
drinking?)
