Is there a way to set this up so that it can work reliably on every window?
I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" unfortunately. How windows operate on keystrokes and mouse buttons is up to the individual apps.
Some apps can be convinced to work differently. For instance I have this xterm line in my .Xdefaults:
XTerm*VT100.Translations: #override <Btn1Up>: select-end(PRIMARY, CLIPBOARD, CUT_BUFFER0)
That makes xterm place anything I select in every possible form of cut buffer or selection (why are there 3, who knows? :-). so I can at least paste things from xterm into any other app using whatever technique that app wants.
I see, thank you very much for this! I will try this and see how things go. It used to be the case, that the cut and paste using the mouse left button and the middle button (also shift-insert keys) used to work pretty much everywhere, and now, it is a hit-or-miss depending on the application.
Too bad!
Thanks again!
