If you're using IMAP and are concerned about bandwidth usage, note that you can also do your filtering on Gmail directly, e.g. filter unimportant stuff into a Gmail folder which you can then *not* subscribe on TBird (so it won't be downloaded). Use the webmail interface to look at it once in a while.
None of that can be done on POP.
