I'm using Thunderbird (52.4.0 (64-bit)) and haven't had an issue.
It sometimes takes a while connecting to the SMTP server when sending
email, but I suspect that's the SMTP server's problem (we use Office365
for email services).

Thanks for the response. I gave up on fixing it and wiped out
.thunderbird/. Now I am recreating filters and installing some add-ons
that I need. That fixed the passwords problem.
