I certainly noticed a massive improvement when I went from mail spool files to maildir on Dovecot.
I can see the thinking behind using links as flags as opposed to files with just a few bytes of data in them. Though I think it wouldn't work well with large configuration files being done that way, and I couldn't see them being very human-friendly.
