Interesting! I had NO IDEA if this is the case, being a user of older Unix systems. Thanks for the tip, I'll know better now!
IIRC vipw dates back to (at least) 4.0bsd, over 25 years ago.

Also, if you have an editor you would rather use for editing, instead of VI, you can set EDITOR to the editor of your choice. Both vipw and vigr honor it.
