A good first step would be to disable USB PM and see if the issue goes away.
Thanks! That sounds like useful info. The kernel already had the mouse set to not ever suspend, but backing up to the hub, I see it set to "auto", so I disabled the hub PM and I'll see if I notice the mouse go away again.
