I think I found the terminal problem I had unchecked the tool and the 
menu bar under appearances. I just checked menu which is all I want, 
don't need that row of little icons.

But that has not changed the thunar display. May try the xfce list if I 
can't muddle through by myself. Thanks Joe ...
