I've never known there was a way to avoid it. That's why I'm using it. Every once in a while, for no apparent reason, it will decide my default audio shouldn't be HDMI any longer, then I spend a while discovering that the control center has the wrong device listed for audio. When it isn't doing that, it works fine.
