I have a similar problem, but I'm running Fedora 7.

I had this problem before, then it went away (don't know what
fixed it).  I had to re-install the OS, ran updates shortly after
installation, now the prob. is back :(

I'm using the integrated Intel "HD Audio" on a Gigabyte DS3
Motherboard.
