Thanks for the suggestion.

and I see that xorg-x11-server-Xorg has been upgraded
several times during this time.

have you checked in bios settings for any control of display?
on my toshiba laptop running centos 6.7 and kde 4.3.4, i ran
set up via;
System Settings > Advanced > Power Management
to configure display brightness, suspend and power settings.
everything works as i have configured configured.
