For the record, it takes 10-15 minutes for ntpd to fully synchronize
with its specified servers.
It might be quicker than Paul expects. On a test box, I stopped the
ntpd service and forced the local time-of-day to be about 10 min ahead
of a box with very good time.
Then back on the test box I restarted ntpd
# service ntp start
Watching the time with a loop and ssh.
