Obvious question: have you installed the hplip package?
Well, hp-check is part of the hplip-gui package so I'd guess the answer is
"yes".
FWIW, I get a whole bunch of "errors" running hp-check including those above and
scanning
works.
I get this as part of the output. My printer is connected on the LAN.
