Using compose plus two other key-strokes, will get you just about all the diacritical marks used in most European languages, common fractions, currency symbols, degree signs and other things I can't think of. And they're all simple to do, without trying to memorize obscure codes. For instance, Spanish: ¿ ¡ señor, tío: German: Straße, Fräulein; French: hôtel, françoise; épinards; Italian: è; ½, ¾ 75°: €30, £40, 50¥, 10¢.
