Maybe you're experiencing a different problem. I, too, was under
the impression that the installer crashed but luckily it turned out
that it was running a forced filesystem check on all partitions it
had found. Especially on my large external USB harddisks, this
operation was quite slow (and USB disks don't trigger the disk
activity LED on the main computer - so it took me a while to
realize what was happening).

After some minutes of filesystem checks the installer continued
to operate just fine.

Bad GUI design. There's should be at least some kind of information
or status display, so that the user knows all is well and he just
has to wait. Those forced filesystem checks are braindead anyway.
There's no point in checking every filesystem that is not even an
installation target.
