That's the wrong approach (and wrong file to be editing.)  All 
network interface (cards) configurations are in 
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and gateway information is set in 
/etc/sysconfig/network - leave ifconfig alone. :)  Try my previous 
suggestion please.
