libopencv_core.so.3.4 should be a symbolic link to
libopencv_core.so.3.4.4, same for libopencv_highgui.so.3.4. Try:
g++ -o "sample" ./main.o -lopencv_core -lopencv_highgui

Did you check if the make file supports make config? If so run that
before the make.
