PS. I consider software: check for updates less convenient than the pre-F18 "sofware updates".
I commented on this previously. The Software program in Gnome does not do an yum update for me. It behaves just as you report in F18.
Does it work for anyone?
It usually works for me, but seems to hang sometimes. I think it's when there is the pop-up dialog for additional packages or deleted packages. When it happens, the progress bar disappears and the updater appears to hang.
Killing it and running yum by hand has always worked in that case.
